Fruit size and shape are critical agronomical and pomological attributes and prime targets in peach breeding *** from the flat peach type,a Mendelian trait well-characterized at the genetic level,ample diversity of fruit size and shapes is present across peach ***,knowledge of the underlying genomic loci remains *** this work,fruit size and shape were assessed in a collection of non-flat peach accessions and selections,under controlled fruit load *** architecture of these traits was then dissected by combining association and linkage mapping,revealing a major locus on the proximal end of chromosome 6(qSHL/Fs6.1)explaining a large proportion of phenotypic variability for longitudinal shape and also affecting fruit size.A second major locus for fruit longitudinal shape(qSHL5.1),probably also affecting fruit size,was found co-localizing at locus G,suggesting pleiotropic effects of peach/nectarine *** additional QTL for fruit longitudinal shape(qSHL6.2)was identi fied in the distal end of chromosome 6 in a cross with an ornamental double-flower peach and co-localized with the di2 locus,controlling flower *** assisting breeding activities,knowledge of loci controlling fruit size and shape paves the way for more in-depth studies aimed at the identification of underlying genetic variant(s).

Evidence for a con served microbiota across the different developmental stages of Plodia interpunctella

diversity and composition of lepidopteran microbiotas are poorly investigated, especially across the different developmental stages. To improve this knowledge, we characterize the microbiota among different developmental stages of the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, which is considered one of the major pest of commodities world-wide. Using culture-independent approach based on Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing we characterized the microbiota of four developmental stages: eggs, first-, and last-instar larvae, and adult. A total of 1022 bacterial OTUs were obtained, showing a quite diversified microbiota associated to all the analyzed stages. The microbiotas associated with P. interpunctella resulted almost constant throughout the developmental stages, with approximately 77% of bacterial OTUs belonging to the phylum of Proteobacteria. The dominant bacterial genus is represented by Burkholderia (?64%), followed by Propionibacterium, Delftia, Pseudomonas, and Stenotrophomonas. A core bacterial community, composed of 139 OTUs, was detected in all the developmental stages, among which 112 OTUs were assigned to the genus Burkholderia. A phylogenetic reconstruction, based on the 16S rRNA, revealed that our Burkholderia OTUs clustered with Burkholderia cepacia complex, in the same group of those isolated from the hemipterans Gossyparia spuria and Acanthococcus aceris. The functional profiling, predicted on the base of the bacterial 16S rRNA, indicates differences in the metabolic pathways related to metabolism of amino acids between preimaginal and adult stages. We can hypothesize that bacteria may support the insect host during preimaginal stages.

Updating the orbital ephemeris of the dipping source XB 1254–690 and the distance to the source

XB 1254-690 is a dipping low mass X-ray binary system hosting a neutron star and showing type I X-ray bursts. We aim at obtaining a more accurate orbital ephemeris and at constraining the orbital period derivative of the system for the first time. In addition, we want to better constrain the distance to the source in order to locate the system in a well defined evolutive scenario. We apply, for the first time, an orbital timing technique to XB 1254-690, using the arrival times of the dips present in the light curves that have been collected during 26 yr of X-ray pointed observations acquired from different space missions. We estimate the dip arrival times using a statistical method that weights the count-rate inside the dip with respect to the level of persistent emission outside the dip. We fit the obtained delays as a function of the orbital cycles both with a linear and a quadratic function. We infer the orbital ephemeris of XB 1254-690, improving the accuracy of the orbital period with respect to previous estimates. We infer a mass of M2 = 0.42 ± 0.04 M for the donor star, in agreement with estimations already present in literature, assuming that the star is in thermal equilibrium while it transfers part of its mass via the inner Lagrangian point, and assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 Mo. Using these assumptions, we also constrain the distance to the source, finding a value of 7.6±0.8 kpc. Finally, we discuss the evolution of the system, suggesting that it is compatible with a conservative mass transfer driven by magnetic braking.

A comparison between different methods for determining grain distribution in coarse channel beds

The determination of grain size distribution in alluvial channels plays a crucial role in understanding fluvial dynamics and processes(e.g.,hydraulic resistance,sediment transport and erosion,and habitat suitability).However,to determine an accurate distribution,tremendous field efforts are often ***,the grain size distribution of channel beds have been obtained by manually counting a set of randomly selected stones(the "pebble count").Based on this elementary principle,many authors have proposed different adaptations to overcome weaknesses and problems with the original method;with the development of digital technology,photographic methods have been developed in order to significantly reduce the time spent in the *** of these "image-assisted" methods include Automated Grain Sizing,ACS,and Manual Photo Sieving,*** this study,AGS and MPS were applied under ideal laboratory conditions,to be used as reference,and in two field conditions with different degrees of difficulty in terms of visual determination of the grain size distribution;these included an artificial unlined channel and two natural mountainous *** results were compared with those obtained with the pebble-count *** general,strong agreement between the methods was found when they were applied under favorable conditions( "the laboratory"),and the differences between the imageassisted and pebble count methods were similar to those found in previous *** being more time consuming,MPS was deemed preferable to AGS when conditions are not optimal;in these cases,the time spent on image elaboration significantly increased in the AGS method(approximately three-fold),but the estimation error of the median grain size decreased by approximately 37%.The use of imageassisted analysis has proven to be robust for characterizing sediment in watercourse beds and reducing fieldwork time,but because field conditions can significantly affect the accuracy of results,the method

Note on non-vacuum conformal family contributions to Rényi entropy in two-dimensional CFT

We calculate the contributions of a general non-vacuum conformal family to R′enyi entropy in twodimensional conformal field theory（CFT）. The primary operator of the conformal family can be either non-chiral or chiral, and we denote its scaling dimension by ？. For the case of two short intervals on a complex plane, we expand the R′enyi mutual information by the cross ratio x to order x^（2△＋2）. For the case of one interval on a torus with low temperature, we expand the R′enyi entropy by q = exp（-2πβ/L）, with β being the inverse temperature and L being the spatial period, to order q^（△＋2）. To make the result meaningful, we require that the scaling dimension ？ cannot be too small. For two intervals on a complex plane we need △ 〉 1, and for one interval on a torus we need △ 〉 *** work in the small Newton constant limit on the gravity side and so a large central charge limit on the CFT side,and find matches of gravity and CFT results.
