Complexity is commonly summarized as‘the actions of the whole are more than the sum of the actions of the parts’.Understanding how the coherence emerges from these natural and artificial systems provides a radical shift in the process of thought,and brings huge promises for controlling and fostering this emergence.The authors define the term‘Complex System Engineering’to denote this approach,which aims at transferring the radical insights from Complex System Science to the pragmatic world of engineering,especially in the Computing System Engineering domain.A theoretical framework for Complex System Engineering is built by the morphogenetic engineering framework,which identifies a graduation of models,in growing order of generative power.The implementation of Complex System Engineering requires a portfolio of operational solutions:The authors therefore provide a classification of Complex System application approaches to answer this challenge and support the emergence of Complex System Engineers capable of addressing the issues of an ever more connected world.

In this paper,the authors consider the asymptotic synchronization of a linear dissipative system with multiple feedback dampings.They first show that under the observability of a scalar equation,Kalman’s rank condition is sufficient for the uniqueness of solution to a complex system of elliptic equations with mixedobservations.The authors then establish a general theory on the asymptotic stability and the asymptotic synchronization for the corresponding evolutional system subjected to mixed dampings of various natures.Some classic models are presented to illustrate the field of applications of the abstract theory.

In combination with methyllithium,a 2,6-bis(amino)phenol zinc complex 1 was used in the ring-opening polymerization ofδ-valerolactone in the absence or presence of benzyl alcohol and showed high efficiency,mainly producing cyclic and linear polyvalerolactones,respectively.On the basis of homopolymerization,the ring-opening copolymerization ofε-caprolactone andδ-valerolactone was investigated.The P(CL-co-VL)random copolymers,PCL-b-PVL and PVL-b-PCL diblock copolymers,were prepared by varying the feeding strategy(premixing or sequential feeding).The copolymer composition was adjusted by varying the feeding ratio of two monomers.The structure and thermal properties of obtained polymers were characterized by GPC,1 H-NMR,13 C-NMR,MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy,and DSC,respectively.

Bio-loggers are miniaturized autonomous devices that record quantitative data on the state of free-ranging ani-mals(e.***.behavior,position and physiology)and their natural environment.This is especially relevant for spe-cies where direct visual observation is difficult or impossible.Today,ongoing technical development allows the monitoring of numerous parameters in an increasing range of species over extended periods.However,the ex-ternal attachment of devices might affect various aspects of animal performance(energetics,thermoregulation,foraging as well as social and reproductive behavior),which ultimately affect fitness.External attachment might also increase entanglement risk and the conspicuousness of animals,leaving them more vulnerable to preda-tion.By contrast,implantation of devices can mitigate many of these undesirable effects and might be prefera-ble,especially for long-term studies,provided that the many challenges associated with surgical procedures can be mastered.Implantation may then allow us to gather data that would be impossible to obtain otherwise and thereby may provide new and ecologically relevant insights into the life of wild animals.Here,we:(i)discuss the pros and cons of attachment methods;(ii)highlight recent field studies that used implanted bio-loggers to address eco-physiological questions in a wide range of species;and(iii)discuss logger implantation in light of ethical considerations.

The cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis,spirulina,is a source of pigments such as phycobiliprotein and phycocyanin.Phycocyanin is used in the food,cosmetics,and pharmaceutical industries because of its antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and anticancer properties.The different steps involved in extraction and purification of this protein can alter the final properties.In this review,the stability of phycocyanin(pH,temperature,and light)is discussed,considering the physicochemical parameters of kinetic modeling.The optimal working pH range for phycocyanin is between 5.5 and 6.0 and it remains stable up to 45℃;however,exposure to relatively high temperatures or acidic pH decreases its half-life and increases the degradation kinetic constant.Phycobiliproteins are sensitive to light;preservatives such as mono-and disaccharides,citric acid,or sodium chloride appear to be effective stabilizing agents.Encapsulation within nano-or micro-structured materials such as nanofibers,microparticles,or nanoparticles,can also preserve or enhance its stability.

The elementary mechanistic model of adsorption and sorption is based on a simple hypothesis: the adsorption sites are uniformly distributed on the surface of the pore walls in the adsorbent, the sorption sites are uniformly distributed in the volume of the polymer. In this first paper we will analyze the simple case where one solute molecule is only allowed to occupy a single adsorption or sorption site. A common elementary occupation law of the free sites is assumed: the differential increase of the number of the adsorbed/sorbed molecules is proportional to the differential increase of the activity of the solute and the concentration of the free (non-occupied) sites in the solid. The proportionality coefficient is called affinity coefficient depending on the solid/solute couple and on the temperature and independent of the concentration of the solute. In adsorption the concentration of the free sites is a surface concentration on the pore walls and in sorption it is expressed by the molarity. The simple mono- layer adsorption law of Jovanovi? is obtained: n = n_0(1-e^(-KP)) where n is the number of moles adsorbed when the pressure is P. n0is the total number of adsorption sites and K the affinity coefficient for adsorption. The sorption law writes: a=1/k[?/(1-?)] +(1-r)/kln[1+1/r?/(1-?)] where ?, r and k hold respectively for the volume fraction of the solvent in the polymer, for the ratio of the molar volumes of the solvent to the elementary polymer chain containing one single adsorption site and for the sorption affinity coefficient. The confrontation of these equations to experimental isotherms is satisfactory in comparison with the classical Langmuir and Flory–Huggins equations: the best results are obtained for adsorption of vapors on a 5A zeolite and for all analyzed sorption results.

Few-layer graphene (FLG) sheets with sizes exceeding several micrometers have been synthesized by exfoliation of expanded graphite in aqueous solution of ammonia under microwave irradiation, with an overall yield approaching 8 wt.%. Transmission electron microscopy (in bright-field and dark-field modes) together with electron diffraction patterns and atomic force microscopy confirmed that this graphene material consisted mostly of mono-, bi- or few-layer graphene (less than ten layers). The high degree of surface reduction was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron and infrared spectroscopies. In addition, the high stability of the FLG in the liquid medium facilitates the deposition of the graphene material onto several substrates via low-cost solution-phase processing techniques, opening the way to subsequent applications of the material.

Liver transplantation for critically ill cirrhotic patients:Overview and pragmatic proposals

Liver transplantation for critically ill cirrhotic patients with acute deterioration of liver function associated with extrahepatic organ failures is controversial. While transplantation has been shown to be beneficial on an indivi-dual basis, the potentially poorer post-transplant outcome of these patients taken as a group can be held as an argument against allocating livers to them. Although this issue concerns only a minority of liver transplants, it calls into question the very heart of the allocation paradigms in place. Indeed, most allocation algorithms have been centered on prioritizing the sickest patients by using the model for end-stage liver disease score. This has led to allocating increasing numbers of livers to increasingly critically ill patients without setting objective or consensual limits on how sick patients can be when they receive an organ. Today, finding robust criteria to deem certain cirrhotic patients too sick to be transplanted seems urgent in order to ensure the fairness of our organ allocation protocols. This review starts by fleshing out the argument that finding such criteria is essential. It examines five types of difficulties that have hindered the progress of recent literature on this issue and identifies various strategies that could be followed to move forward on this topic, taking into account the recent discussion on acute on chronic liver failure. We move on to review the literature along four axes that could guide clinicians in their decision-making process regarding transplantation of critically ill cirrhotic patients.

We consider first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with vertical characteristics. It was shown in [4] that such systems can be exactly controllable with the help of internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. However, it is possible that, for physical or engineering reasons, we can not put any control on the equations corresponding to zero eigenvalues. In this paper, we will establish the exact controllability only by means of physically meaningfnl internal controls applied to the equations corresponding to non-zero eigenvalues. We also show the exact controllability for a very simplified model by means of switching controls.
