Thermal Convection in a Spherical Shell with Melting/Freezing at either or both of Its Boundaries

In a number of geophysical or planetological settings, including Earth＇s inner core, a sili- cate mantle crystallizing from a magma ocean, or an ice shell surrounding a deep water ocean--a situa- tion possibly encountered in a number of Jupiter and Saturn＇s icy satellites--a convecting crystalline layer is in contact with a layer of its melt. Allowing for melting/freezing at one or both of the boundaries of the solid layer is likely to affect the pattern of convection in the layer. We study here the onset of thermal convection in a viscous spherical shell with dynamically induced melting/freezing at either or both of its boundaries. It is shown that the behavior of each interface---permeable or impermeable-- depends on the value of a dimensionless number P （one for each boundary）, which is the ratio of a melting/freezing timescale over a viscous relaxation timescale. A small value of P corresponds to perme- able boundary conditions, while a large value of P corresponds to impermeable boundary conditions. Linear stability analysis predicts a significant effect of semi-permeable boundaries when the number P characterizing either of the boundary is small enough： allowing for melting/freezing at either of the boundary allows the emergence of larger scale convective modes. The effect is particularly drastic when the outer boundary is permeable, since the degree 1 mode remains the most unstable even in the case of thin spherical shells. In the case of a spherical shell with permeable inner and outer boundaries, the most unstable mode consists in a global translation of the solid shell, with no deformation. In the limit of a full sphere with permeable outer boundary, this corresponds to the ＂convective translation＂ mode recently proposed for Earth＇s inner core. Proteomic analysis of adipose tissue during the last weeks of gestation in pure and crossbred Large White or Meishan fetuses gestated by sows of either breed

Background: The degree of adipose tissue development at birth may influence neonatal survival and subsequent health outcomes. despite their lower birth weights, piglets from Meishan sows(a fat breed with excellent maternal ability) have a higher survival rate than piglets from Large White sows(a lean breed). To identify the main pathways involved in subcutaneous adipose tissue maturation during the last month of gestation, we compared the proteome and the expression levels of some genes at d 90 and d 110 of gestation in purebred and crossbred Large White or Meishan fetuses gestated by sows of either ***: A total of 52 proteins in fetal subcutaneous adipose tissue were identified as differential y expressed over the course of gestation. Many proteins involved in energy metabolism were more abundant, whereas some proteins participating in cytoskeleton organization were reduced in abundance on d 110 compared with d 90. Irrespective of age,24 proteins differed in abundance between fetal genotypes, and an interaction effect between fetal age and genotype was observed for 13 proteins. The abundance levels of proteins known to be responsive to nutrient levels such as aldolase and fatty acid binding proteins, as wel as the expression levels of FASN, a key lipogenic enzyme, and MLXIPL, a pivotal transcriptional mediator of glucose-related stimulation of lipogenic genes, were elevated in the adipose tissue of pure and crossbred fetuses from Meishan sows. These data suggested that the adipose tissue of these fetuses had superior metabolic functionality, whatever their paternal genes. Conversely, proteins participating in redox homeostasis and apoptotic cel clearance had a lower abundance in Meishan than in Large White fetuses. Numerical study on waste polyethylene pyrolysis driven by self-sustaining smoldering

Polyethylene is the type of waste plastic that accounts for the most significant proportion of municipal solid *** polyethylene can be valorized via pyrolysis and produce value-added oil,gas,and *** the other hand,self-sustaining smoldering is an emerging technical means to deal with sand/soil contaminated by organic *** high-temperature heat generated by smoldering can be used as a heat source for pyrolyzing waste ***,this study investigates numerically the pyrolysis of waste polyethylene driven by self-sustaining smoldering.A novel 4-step lumped kinetic model is proposed for simulating the pyrolysis of waste *** results indicate that the operating parameters can determine the pyrolysis product yields by regulating the pyrolysis temperature and the volatile residence *** that higher temperatures and longer residence times favor the generation of shorter-chain pyrolysis products because of the intensified volatiles’secondary *** can be concluded that a high interface-wall heat transfer coefficient(400 W m^(-2)K^(-1)),a low PE content(0.20),a high char concentration(2.4%),and a moderate air velocity(0.040 m s^(-1))are beneficial to oil *** some extent,this study may broaden the boundaries for the application of self-sustained smoldering-driven pyrolysis.

The study of pickling of the EL21T6 substrate in a nitric acid bath firstly provided knowledge of the influence of the different experimental parameters(concentration of acid,temperature and stirring of the solution)in relation to the etching *** experimental part led to the choice of standard pickling(T_(bath)=25℃,moderate stirring(250 rpm),[HNO_(3)]=1.20 mol/L,duration of 2 min)so as to obtain constant removal of material,even after several uses of the pickling *** observations also confirmed that in these operating conditions,pickling concerns both the grains of the matrix and the precipitates of type Mg3(Nd,Gd),leading to uniform removal of material from the *** from a number of assumptions,thermodynamic and chemical kinetic studies then allowed a pickling mechanism to be proposed and led to obtaining values for the corresponding kinetic parameters(order of reaction,constant of mean rate,activation energy)to be obtained.

A method based upon the weighted total cross section （WTCS） theory is proposed to calculate the photo-ionisation cross sections and the radiative recombination rate coefficients between the fundamental level of CO and the main electronic states of its corresponding ion. Total photo-ionisation cross sections and radiative recombination rate coefficients are determined from the calculation of elementary vibrational photo-ionisation cross sections. Transitions be- tween CO＋（X, A and B） and CO（X） are considered. Total photo-ionisation cross sections and recombination coefficients are computed in the temperature interval 500-15000 K.

The corrosion resistance of three Mg alloys containing rare-earth elements(WE43,EV31 and ZE41)was studied and compared to that of two Mg-Al alloys(AZ31 and AZ91)and of pure Mg(99.95 wt.%).Current-voltage curves and electrochemical impedance measurements were performed with rotating disk electrodes in an aerated 0.1 M Na_(2)SO_(4)*** all the alloys,it was confirmed that the intermetallic particles acted as local cathodes and that more protective films were formed on the alloys surface by comparison with the pure *** rates were determined from inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy measurements and from the electrochemical *** corrosion rates were observed for the rare-earth Mg alloys compared to the AZ series *** data allowed the corrosion mechanisms to be discussed.

Electro-Hydrodynamics and Kinetic Modeling of Dry and Humid Air Flows Activated by Corona Discharges

The present work is devoted to the 2D simulation of a point-to-plane Atmospheric Corona Discharge Reactor （ACDR） powered by a DC high voltage supply. The corona reactor is periodically crossed by thin mono filamentary streamers with a natural repetition frequency of some tens of kHz. The study compares the results obtained in dry air and in air mixed with a small amount of water vapour （humid air）. The simulation involves the electro-dynamics~ chemical kinetics and neutral gas hydrodynamics phenomena that influence the kinetics of the chemical species transformation. Each discharge lasts about one hundred of a nanosecond while the post- discharge occurring between two successive discharges lasts one hundred of a microsecond. The ACDR is crossed by a lateral dry or humid air flow initially polluted with 400 ppm of NO. After 5 ms, the time corresponding to the occurrence of 50 successive discharge/post-discharge phases, a higher NO removal rate and a lower ozone production rate are found in humid air. This change is due to the presence of the HO2 species formed from the H primary radical in the discharge zone.

Interspecific competition with native species during biological invasions can sometimes limit alien *** aimed to determine the potential ecological effects of Limatus durhamii Theobald 1901,a native Neotropical mosquito (Diptera:Culicidae) species,on the invasive species Aedes (Stegomyia)aegypti (Linnaeus 1762)that breeds in the same artificial water *** time and adult dry mass were measured in 3 rearing conditions:control (a single larva),intraspecific competition (2 conspecific larvae),and interspecific competition (2 heterospecific larvae).Food was provided ad libitum to eliminate exploitative *** ***,development time was not affected by interspecific interference competition (nonsignificant differences with the control)and the adult dry mass was significantly higher,meaning that individual fitness likely ***,because previous studies showed longer development time and lighter adults during competition with other invasive mosquitoes,it is likely that *** can express a different phenotype depending on the competing *** similar pattern found for *** females and the nonsignificant difference with the control for males explain in part why this species can compete with ***.

The aim of this paper is to test a developed SOR R＆B method using the Chebyshev accelerator algorithm to solve the Laplace equation in a cubic 3D configuration. Comparisons are made in terms of precision and computing time with other elliptic equation solvers proposed in the open source LIS library. The first results, obtained by using a single core on a HPC, show that the developed SOR R＆B method is efficient when the spectral radius needed for the Chebyshev acceleration is carefully pre-estimated. Preliminary results obtained with a parallelized code using the MPI library are also discussed when the calculation is distributed over one hundred cores.
