Neurons are notoriously vulnerable cell *** the slightest change in their internal and/or external environments will cause much distress and dysfunction,leading often to their death.A range of pathological conditions,including stroke,head trauma,and neurodegenerative disease,can generate stress in neurons,affecting their survival and proper *** most neural pathologies,mitochondria become dysfunctional and this plays a pivotal role in the process of cell *** challenge over the last few decades has been to develop effective interventions that improve neuronal homeostasis under pathological *** interventions,often referred to as disease-modifying or neuroprotective,have,however,proved frustratingly elusive,at both preclinical and,in particular,clinical *** this perspective,we highlight two factors that we feel are key to the development of effective neuroprotective *** are:firstly,the choice of dose of intervention and method of application,and secondly,the selection of subjects,whether they be patients or the animal model.

The in vitro modeling of human brain connectomes is key to exploring the structure-function relationship of the central nervous *** this intricate relationship will allow better studying of the pathological mechanisms of neurodegeneration and hence result in improved drug screenings for complex neurological disorders,such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson ***,currently used in vitro modeling technologies lack the potential to mimic physiologically relevant neural ***,we present an innovative microfluidic design that overcomes one of the current limitations of in vitro brain models:their inability to recapitulate the heterogeneity of brain regions in terms of cellular density and *** device allows the controlled and uniform deposition of any cellular population within unique plating chambers of variable size and *** the fine tuning of the hydrodynamic resistance and cell deposition rate,the number of neurons seeded in each plating chamber can be tailored from a thousand up to a *** applying our design to so-called neurofluidic devices,we offer novel neuro-engineered microfluidic platforms that can be strategically used as organ-on-a-chip platforms for neuroscience *** advances provide essential enhancements to in vitro platforms in the quest to provide structural architectures that support models for investigating human neurodegenerative diseases.

A volume averaged columnar solidification model,which couples the flow,temperature and solute concentration fields,is applied to simulate experimental continuous casting cases with and without vertical electromagnetic stirring(V-EMS).The calculated distribution of magnetic induction intensity and final macrosegregation maps are consistent with the experimental *** results reveal that the V-EMS promotes longitudinal melt flow,accelerates heat dissipation and solidification and finally reduces the central segregation of ***,when V-EMS is applied,the solute distribution becomes asymmetric because the melt flow shows opposite directions between the near and far sides from *** obvious positive segregation band is observed at about 1/4 width of the billet near the stirrer in both calculated and experimental *** position and degree of such positive segregation could be affected by installation height of stirrer,as demonstrated by additional simulation cases.

Chaotic systems,presenting complex and nonreproducible dynamics,may be found in nature,from the interaction between planets to the evolution of weather,but can also be tailored using current technologies for advanced signal ***,the realization of chaotic signal generators remains challenging due to the involved dynamics of the underlying *** this paper,we experimentally and numerically present a disruptive approach to generate a chaotic signal from a micromechanical *** technique overcomes the long-established complexity of controlling the buckling in micro/nanomechanical structures by modulating either the amplitude or the frequency of the driving force applied to the resonator in the nonlinear *** experimental characteristic parameters of the chaotic regime,namely,the Poincarésections and Lyapunov exponents,are directly comparable to simulations for different *** results confirm that this dynamical approach is transposable to any kind of micro/nanomechanical resonator,from accelerometers to *** demonstrate a direct application exploiting the mixing properties of the chaotic regime by transforming an off-the-shelf microdiaphragm into a true random number generator conforming to the National Institute of Standards and Technology *** versatility of this original method opens new paths to combine the unique properties of chaos with the exceptional sensitivity of microstructures,leading to emergent microsystems.

Asymptotic expansions of the voltage potential in terms of the "radius" of a diametrically small(or several diametrically small) material inhomogeneity(ies) are by now quite well-known. Such asymptotic expansions for diametrically small inhomogeneities are uniform with respect to the conductivity of the *** contrast, thin inhomogeneities, whose limit set is a smooth, codimension 1 manifold,σ, are examples of inhomogeneities for which the convergence to the background potential,or the standard expansion cannot be valid uniformly with respect to the conductivity, a, of the inhomogeneity. Indeed, by taking a close to 0 or to infinity, one obtains either a nearly homogeneous Neumann condition or nearly constant Dirichlet condition at the boundary of the inhomogeneity, and this difference in boundary condition is retained in the *** purpose of this paper is to find a "simple" replacement for the background potential, with the following properties:(1) This replacement may be(simply) calculated from the limiting domain Ω\σ, the boundary data on the boundary of Ω, and the right-hand side.(2) This replacement depends on the thickness of the inhomogeneity and the conductivity,a, through its boundary conditions on σ.(3) The difference between this replacement and the true voltage potential converges to 0 uniformly in a, as the inhomogeneity thickness tends to 0.

For equations of order two with the Dirichlet boundary condition, as the Laplace problem, the Stokes and the Navier-Stokes systems, perforated domains were only studied when the distance between the holes d_ε is equal to or much larger than the size of the holes ε. Such a diluted porous medium is interesting because it contains some cases where we have a non-negligible effect on the solution when(ε, d_ε) →(0, 0).Smaller distances were avoided for mathematical reasons and for these large distances, the geometry of the holes does not affect or rarely affect the asymptotic result. Very recently, it was shown for the 2D-Euler equations that a porous medium is non-negligible only for inter-holes distances much smaller than the sizes of the *** this result, the boundary regularity of holes plays a crucial role, and the permeability criterion depends on the geometry of the lateral boundary. In this paper, we relax slightly the regularity condition, allowing a corner, and we note that a line of irregular obstacles cannot slow down a perfect fluid in any regime such thatε ln d_ε→ 0.
