Song divergence indicates an unclear relationship between the Neotropical and Nearctic Horned Larks

Background:Some studies have indicated that the Horned Larks(Eremophila alpestris)should be considered as a species *** it split into four species or clades and seven subclades based on genetic,morphological,and biogeographic ***,other aspects like song divergence have not been studied and several subspe-cies have not been evaluated,leading to important information gaps in this group of *** this work,we aimed to assess the differences in song traits and playback response between the Nearctic subclade and the Neotropical or Colombian subspecies ***:We compared six song traits between these groups and performed field playback experiments,to test the response of the Neotropical larks to both *** tested the difference in the variables for separate as well as by principal component analysis(PCA).Results:We found significant differences(p<0.05)in the individual song traits and the PCA analysis between the two ***,the PCA analysis showed a clearer divergence of the Neotropical songs in comparison to the Nearctic songs of different locations within North ***,the playback analysis showed a significantly lower response of *** to the songs of the Nearctic ***:Besides this song divergence,there are important ecological and biogeographic differences between the Neotropical and Nearctic Horned Larks,that indicate an unclear relationship between these two ***,further morphological and genetic studies are required to clarify the taxonomy of the Neotropical Horned Lark and define if they share the same evolutionary history as the other subspecies of the Nearctic subclade.

Iconicity of the Poetic Form:The Rhythm in a Short Story

This paper proposes that poetic form is a phonetic-conceptual integration that works from the iconic relations and cognitive mapping between the phonetic complex and the conceptualaffective complex,and that such mappings can be analyzed using the blending model by Fauconnier and *** literary expressions maintain a relation of iconicity with its meaning,it is possible to perform a metaphorical reading of the text as a single poetic form or a sole symbolic *** an example of the application of this model in literary analysis,some stylistic strategies from "Los inocentes",by Ines Arredondo,are analyzed with the purpose of showing the effects of iconic relationships that are created between the phonetic complex and the conceptual-affective complex at the moment of building the meaning of the literary text.

Analytic solutions in the acoustic black hole analogue of the conical Kerr metric

We study the sound perturbation of a rotating acoustic black hole in the presence of a disclination. The radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation is written into a Heun form, and its analytical solution is obtained. These solutions have an explicit dependence on the parameter of the disclination. We obtain the exact Hawking-Unruh radiation spectrum.

Alterations in epigenetic control of gene expression play an important role in many diseases, including gastric cancer. Many studies have identified a large number of upregulated oncogenic mi RNAs and downregulated tumour-suppressor mi RNAs in this type of cancer. In this review, we provide an overview of the role of mi RNAs, pointing to their potential to be useful as diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarkers in gastric cancer. Moreover, we discuss the influence of polymorphisms and epigenetic modifications on mi RNA activity.

This paper presents an optimization methodology for the geometric configuration of a room–and–pillar mining project,considering safety and operational restrictions while maximizing ore *** underground manganese mine was chosen as a case study to investigate the capabilities of the presented methodology.A software package(OPTIMINE)was implemented to address the computational demand in an automated ***–dimensional finite difference analyses were performed in FLAC3D and used as implicit functions to consider safety in terms of the factor of safety and room *** obtained results showed that recovery could be increased from 44%to more than 80%in a safe manner.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of Beauveria bassiana(Bb 1205)on controlling Fusarium oxysporum ***(Fol 17108)in tomato plants in greenhouse *** of Bb 1205 was the most promising among the agronomic variables and expression of the activity of the enzymesβ-1,3-glucanases and *** of Bb 1205 occurred at a concentration of 1×108 conidia·mL−1,which was administered onto the leaves,directly into the soil and via *** with Fol 17108 occurred with 1×106 spores·mL−1,which were added directly to the *** was used for measuring agronomic parameters,namely activity of chitinases andβ-1,3-glucanases in foliage and *** Bb 1205 was added to the soil,the chlorophyll index and aerial part length showed significant *** addition,it was determined that root length,fresh weight of foliage,flower,and fruit count increased 82 days after inoculation(dai).Chitinase activity induced by Bb 1205 in leaves and roots of tomato plants infected with Fol 17108 was observed when injected into the stem at 32 dai(41.8 and 11.6-fold,respectively).Inoculation on the foliage showed a 10-fold increase ofβ-1,3-glucanases in the roots after 82 *** for leaves,a 3.8-fold increase was found when the stem was *** the different in vivo applications,Bb 1205 activated its defenses by expressing the chitinase enzymes andβ-1,3-glucanase,thus reducing the damage caused by Fol 17108,demonstrating increase plant growth thereafter.

SUSTAINABLE HOUSE-SCALE PASSIVE RAINWATER CAPTURE LANDSCAPE IN THE DESERT SOUTHWEST

A passive rainwater harvesting technique was used to design a sustainable landscape for a residential lot located in the desert. The design was adapted to the Desert Southwest region of the United States based on thirty years of daily historical climate data including precipitation and reference evapotranspiration (ET0). Four cities including El Paso, TX, Albuquerque, NM, Phoenix, AZ, and Pahrump, NV, were selected to represent the area. The residential lot was broken up into micro-watersheds reflecting the runoff of water from each separate portion of the house roof, driveway, and lawn area. The paper explains in detail the design steps for one of the micro-watersheds where water retention and infiltration structures were distributed throughout the soil area to capture stormwater runoff close to its source. A passive rainwater capture landscape was obtained by using the stormwater captured in the infiltration structures and stored in the surrounding soil. Native vegetation (shrubs and trees) will use this water exclusively for growth. These plants will not require watering once their root establishment period has passed, except in extreme droughts. Meanwhile, stormwater discharge from the lot will decrease and the groundwater recharge will increase. Results indicate that the current urban water budget can be made sustainable by replacing watering of landscape by municipal water with harvested stormwater. This results in a relatively lush and shady environment even in desert climates. The success is an artifact of the tendency of urban watersheds to increase the volume of stormwater relative to pre-development conditions.

Effect of Carbonation on Microbiologic Parameters of Refrigerated Bovine Raw Milk

This study evaluated the effect of carbon dioxide addition on microbiological quality during refrigerated storage of raw milk collected in Curitiba city, Brazil. A three factor-two level full factorial design was used to investigate the effect of the pH （5.8-6.4）, storage time （0-10 days） and storage temperature （5-10 ℃）, on the responses, namely, mesophiles, psychrotrophs, lipolytic psychrotrophs and proteolytic psychrotrophs counts. Results showed that increase in pH and storage time had significant effect on the microbial count. No significant effect of storage temperature was observed for all the microorganisms studied. All responses were well predicted by selected mathematical models, as denoted by coefficient of determination above 0.95.

Inventory of primary emissions of selected persistent organic pollutants to the atmosphere in the area of Great Mendoza

The setting up of a country or region-based inventory is considered a crucial step toward the elimination of worldwide persistent organic pollutants(POPs)***,the need of comparable emission inventories at city or region level is widely recognized to develop evidence-based policies accounting for the relation between emissions and institutional,socio-economic and demographic characteristics at small scale *** to the low spatial and temporal resolution of the available measurements,highly variable air concentrations of several POPs have been observed in Latin American and Caribbean *** paper presents a high resolution spatially disaggregated atmospheric emission inventory for selected POPs in order to assess the environmental fate of some of these compounds in a finer *** study case we estimated releases to air of POPs in a typical mid-size urban conglomeration in *** compounds were total polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs),total polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs),total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDT)on a sum basis,hexachlorobenzene(HCB)and dioxins and furans(PCDD/Fs),for which emissions were estimated in 0.92 kg/year,1.65 kg/year,4.2E-02 kg/year(total sum of congeners),0.86 kg/year and 4.4E-02 kg/year respectively,values that are in accordance with the geographic and economic *** emitting sources are quite varied,there are very clear trends,particularly in relation to open burning of municipal solid waste and agrochemical use as major ***,the inventory provides valuable data for the analysis of the heterogeneity of POP emissions and the necessary inputs for air quality modeling.
