Oregano and Rosemary Essential Oils in Collagen Fiber and Polyvinyl Alcohol Films: Application as Biodegradable Active Packaging for Ready-to-Eat Meat Products

Developing packaging using biomaterials offers a solution to the problem of solid plastic waste in urban areas. However, selecting suitable materials remains challenging, particularly when the packaging is intended for food products with high moisture content, such as meat. In response to this challenge, a novel film comprising a blend of collagen fiber and polyvinyl alcohol, supplemented with varying concentrations of oregano and rosemary essential oils, was developed. The mechanical properties, in vitro antioxidant activity, and chemical composition of these collagen fiber and polyvinyl alcohol films, enhanced with oregano and rosemary essential oils, were thoroughly characterized. The compounds γ-terpinene and ρ-cymene played a significant role in the antioxidant activity of the packaging. The impact of this active packaging on the quality of sliced mortadella was evaluated over 0, 3, 6, and 9 days of refrigeration. Time significantly influenced most of the variables examined. The concentration of essential oils (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) significantly affected the moisture level, water activity, pH, and Escherichia coli count in the packaged product. For lipid oxidation analysis, the type of essential oil proved significant, with oregano essential oil demonstrating superior activity. A pro-oxidant effect was noted in products with 6% rosemary essential oil. Packages containing essential oils from oregano and rosemary exhibited lower E. coli counts. Films enriched with essential oils showed a higher rate of biodegradation.

Chattering-Free Fault-Tolerant Cluster Control and Fault Direction Identification for HIL UAV Swarm With Pre-Specified Performance

In this paper, the problem of pre-specified performance fault-tolerant cluster consensus control and fault direction identification is solved for the human-in-the-loop(HIL) swarm unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) in the presence of possible nonidentical and unknown direction faults(NUDFs) in the yaw *** control strategy begins with the design of a pre-specified performance event-triggered observer for each individual *** observers estimate the outputs of the human controlled UAVs, and simultaneously achieve the distributed design of actual control signals as well as cluster consensus of the observer *** is worth mentioning that these observers require neither the high-order derivatives of the human controlled UAVs' output nor a priori knowledge of the initial conditions. The fault-tolerant controller realizes the pre-specified performance output regulation through error transformation and the Nussbaum function. It should be pointed out that there are no chattering caused by the jump of the Nussbaum function when a reverse fault occurs. In addition, to provide a basis for further solving the problem of physical malfunctions, a fault direction identification algorithm is proposed to accurately identify whether a reverse fault has occurred. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control and fault direction identification strategies when the reverse faults occur.

Let V be a vertex operator superalgebra and g=(12···k)be a k-cycle which is viewed as an automorphism of the tensor product vertex operator superalgebra V^(■k).In this paper,we construct an explicit isomorphism from A_(g)(V^(■k))to A(V)if k is odd and to Aσ(V)if k is even whereσis the canonical automorphism of V of order 2 determined by the superspace structure of *** recover previous results by Barron(2016)and Barron and Vander Werf(2014)that there is a one-to-one correspondence between irreducible g-twisted V^(■k)-modules and irreducible V-modules(***σ-twisted V-modules)when k is odd(***).This explicit isomorphism is expected to be useful in our further study on the Zhu algebra of the fixed point subalgebra.

Potassium ions and cyano group modified g-C_(3)N_(4) for effective generation of H_(2)O_(2) through two-electron oxygen reduction

Potassium ions(K^(+))doped graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4))was prepared by a thermal etching method using potassium hydroxide(KOH)as an ion *** transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)results showed that the generation of the cyano group was detected while introducing K^(+).Under simulated sunlight irradiation,the sample with a K^(+)doping amount of 10%showed the highest hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))generation rate of2,140.2μmol h^(-1)g^(-1).The apparent quantum yield(AQY)at 400 nm and the solar-to-chemical conversion(SCC)are 4.35%and1.23%,respectively.K^(+)acted as a bridge between g-C_(3)N_(4)layers,which enhanced charge transfer ***,the cyano group enhanced the adsorption capacity of protons(H^(+))and promoted the yield of H_(2)O_(2).The catalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic stability based on four-cycle *** addition,a mechanism study showed that superoxide radicals(·O_(2)^(-))were the most important active species in the reaction *** production of H_(2)O_(2)was achieved through consecutive single-electron *** study deepens the understanding of the oxygen reduction reaction process and opens up a new venue for improving H_(2)O_(2)generation.

Atypical Presentation of Crohn’s Disease: Diagnostic Challenges in a Clinical Case

Introduction: Crohn’s Disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a heterogeneous presentation. While diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss are hallmarks, atypical manifestations can obscure the diagnosis. This report highlights an unusual presentation of CD to emphasize the need for comprehensive diagnostic strategies. Case Report: A 25-year-old male presented with peripheral edema, anorexia, and abdominal distension but lacked classic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Laboratory findings included microcytic anemia and hypoalbuminemia, while imaging revealed ascites and bowel wall thickening. Elevated fecal calprotectin and positive Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) supported the diagnosis. Endoscopy confirmed ileocolic Crohn’s Disease (L3 + L4). Infliximab therapy resulted in marked clinical improvement. Discussion: This case underscores the complexity of atypical CD presentations. Early use of serological markers, imaging, and endoscopy guided the diagnosis. Recognition of CD’s diverse manifestations is critical for timely intervention. Conclusion: Atypical CD presentations require heightened clinical suspicion and a multidisciplinary approach to reduce diagnostic delays and improve patient outcomes.

The Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) Song

A 1.5-hour recording of six (Gulf of Mexico) captive common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) at Sea Life Park, Hawaii shows that: 1) they have a song of a sequence of tonal (often slurred) notes. The evidence for their song comes from: a) their emitting songs that were complex (both tonally and rhythmically), b) their likely improvising (as inferred from their most complex songs not being repeated), c) songs based on a theme (used repeatedly), d) a bout of singing (at times) including social creativity, e) songs with a distinct beginning, middle and end section, and f) one song consisting of in part, a theme, 2) their songs are not sung in key (as determined from analysing the beginning tonal value of a note with spectral-frequency analysis), and 3) are sung in bouts, and 4) mostly with tonal-striated vocalizations (in the literature termed squawks and bray calls). Their apparent creativity (likely improvisations) and social creativity are of importance to how they evolved cognitively, to the study of song culture (between populations and delphinid species), understanding their (intra and inter-species) associations, and kinds of relationships, determining individual personalities, and perhaps will provide supporting evidence for their ability to reason. As inferred, they sing without being intentionally manipulative from: 1) their use of Gquic psychology [1] (as explained in this article), and 2) as inferred from their likely having an ability to reason [1] [2] (as deduced from their behavioural ecology (their unique exceptional evolutionary freedom), including their comparatively peaceful composure between conspecifics, in line with the proof of The Peaceful Composure Theorem), suggesting (per The Peaceful Composure Theorem) they have an egalitarian-like society. BACKGROUND Pediatric living-donor liver transplantation is considered a safe alternative for the treatment of children with end-stage liver *** tertiary centers and specialized medical staff are necessary to ensure compatible long-term survival rates and quality-of-life for these *** To report the results and the 10-year learning curve of a pediatric living-donor liver transplantation *** We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pediatric recipients from 2013 to ***-transplant outcomes and patient survival rates were compared between two 5-year periods of the *** A total of 25 and 48 patients underwent transplantation in the first(2013-2017)and second period(2018-2023),*** vein and hepatic artery thrombosis occurred in 11(15.1%)and seven(9.6%)patients,*** complications were observed in 39 of 73 patients(53.4%).A lower warm ischemia time was observed in the second period compared to the first(32.6±8.6 minutes vs 38.4±9.8 minutes,P=0.018,respectively).Patient survival rates at 1 and 5 years were 84%in the first period and 91.7%in the second period,with no significant difference(P=0.32).CONCLUSION The reported indications and outcomes align with the current *** findings provide crucial evidence regarding the feasibility of establishing a living donor program with consistent results over time.

Environmental monitoring of small,rural watersheds was one of the components of the Natural Re-sources Management and Rural Poverty Alleviation Program(RS-Rural)in southern *** purpose of the monitoring was to assess the impact of promoting soil conservation and environment manage-ment practices adopted by farmers and funded by the *** four small monitored watersheds,in a total of 95 plots representing distinct land use and soil management,surface soil was collected to characterize ground-zero of the Program by determining several soil physical,chemical and microbio-logical *** component analysis(PCA)shows soil physical,chemical and biological properties were decisive in defining the agricultural soils in the rural watersheds with family *** sensitivity to chemical properties provides an opportunity to improve soil quality if soil management focuses on altering those *** management practiced by tobacco farmers leads to rapid,intense degradation of some natural soil properties,especially those related to the dynamics of soil organic matter,compared with more conservationist uses(forest,regrowth,and grassland).Thus,soil management must be reoriented to avoid the progress of degradation and recover soil physical and biological *** crops and by land-abandonment to allow natural vegetation are important management strategies for the degraded soils used for tobacco production,increasing soil organic matter,nutrients and microbial activity and thus allowing further crop *** conclusion,wa-tersheds with tobacco cropping have soils with lower quality than when under no-tillage grain pro-duction,requiring changes in land use and soil management.

Rescuing agroforestry as strategy for agriculture in Southern Brazil

Knowledge about agricultural ecosystems, as well as about ecological and social interactions that occur in an agricultural context, is essential to promote a balanced environment for production. Incorporating the forest landscape into farming systems has promoted the development of integrated production systems such as agroforestry. However, many aspects of the relationship between farming and the forest landscape have changed since the modernization of agriculture introduced by the Green Revolution. The objectives of this review are：（1） to contribute to the understanding of the changes in cultivation strategies and in the dynamics of agricultural systems,particularly in the context of farming in santa Catarina State, Brazil;（2） to contribute to the understanding of agroforestry systems as a strategy to reintroduce the element of forestry into agricultural production systems; and（3） to compile a list of forest plant species that could be used in agroforestry. The approach adopted in this manuscript seeks to highlight the potential of agroforestry systems to conserve natural resources and thereby to support agricultural development by connecting environmental conservation with income for farmers.

Phenology and Vegetative Growth in a New Production Region of Grapevines:Case Study in Sao Joaquim,santa Catarina,Southern Brazil

In Brazil winemaking is expanding not only in the renewal of vineyards in traditional production areas, but also in the introduction of new crops in the newer winemaking regions. Promising characteristics were observed in the quality of the grapes and wines produced in altitude regions of santa Catarina. The aim of this study is to characterize the geographic and climatic conditions which affect the phenology and vegetative growth of grapevine in S?o Joaquim, in the mountains region of santa Catarina. The vineyards are located in areas with undulated and strongly undulated relief, predominantly in soils originating from basaltic rocks, in climate conditions classified as Cfb according to the K?ppen, as Region I according to Winkler classification. The phenological stage of the grapevines in the S?o Joaquim region begins later and lasts longer in comparison to other winegrowing regions in Brazil. Decrease in photoperiod and low temperatures (<10?C) were the determining factors for the induction of growth cessation of the shoots in S?o Joaquim. The geographic location in a lower latitude and its high altitude results in a distinct growing climate compared to the other winegrowing regions in Brazil.
