AIM:To quantify and compare longitudinal thickness changes of the ganglion cell complex(GCC)and the choroid in patients with different patterns of age-related macular degeneration(AMD)***:Retrospective cohort analysis of anonymized data from participants aged 50y or more and diagnosed with early/intermediate AMD in at least one eye(with no evidence of advanced AMD).A total of 64 participants were included from the Instituto de Retina de lisboa(IRL)study(IPL/2022/MetAllAMD_ESTeSL)and divided into 4 groups according to the Rotterdam classification for *** domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)was used to assess and quantify GCC and choroid thickness at two time points(first visit vs last visit)with a minimum interval of ***:In the GCC inner ring,a thinner thickness(P=0.001)was observed in the atrophic AMD group(51.3±21.4μm)compared to the early AMD(84.3±11.5μm),intermediate AMD(77.6±16.1μm)and neovascular AMD(88.9±16.3μm)*** thickness quantification showed a generalized reduction in the central circle(P=0.002)and inner ring(P=0.001).Slight reductions in retinal thickness were more accentuated in the inner ring in the atrophic AMD(-13%;Pdegenerative(GCC)or vascular(choroid)pattern in the intermediate and atrophic *** quantification of both structures can provide important information about the risk of disease progression in the early and intermediate stages but also for the evolution pattern into late stages(atrophic or neovascular).

Geographic information technologies(GIT)have matured,have become pervasive throughout many types of organizations over recent decades and gained a wide range of attention in diverse sectors of *** goal of this paper is to identify the main drivers and uses of GIT in organizations and to give an overview of GIT uses in developing countries with a focus on a case study developed for Mozambique by analyzing the results of a survey of 123 Mozambican organizations that are current GIT *** results show that the main drivers behind are compatibility,complexity,competitive pressure,donor pressure,government policy,intention to adopt,innovation,relative advantage,security,and technology *** of the public and private sectors use GIT for customer/resource/risk management,decision support,education,research,monitoring,prediction,simulation,suitability analysis,sustainability,use and access.

The water crisis is one of the biggest human problems in developing countries,especially in semi-arid regions where it can form an obstacle to irrigation and cultivation,cattle raising and people's *** construction of small dams/reservoirs are a possible solution to remediate this *** infrastructures must be located in suitable areas to be *** study aimed to find the most suitable locations for small dams/reservoirs in the Tete province region,Mozambique,which has a pronounced water deficit A Geographical Information System(GIS)based approach was used to implement a multicriteria evaluation(MCE)analysis through an Analytic Hierarchical Process(AHP),which included local experts’*** main categories of suitability were identified:"Not suitable”(15%of total area),"Modestly suitable"(78%),and“Suitable"(7%).We found that 35 of the 38(92%)abandoned small dams/reservoirs were in areas classified as“Modestly suitable”confirming the robustness of our *** also found that most of the dams/reservoirs currently operating(78%)and planned(73%)are in modestly suitable *** finding suggests that the decision to construct dams/reservoirs may not have considered the most critical suitability factors identified in this *** data and/or additional criteria are required for the full understanding of finding out why so many dams/reservoirs failed before building new ones to address the population’s water needs in the region.

3D City Models as a Visual Support Tool for the Analysis of Buildings Seismic Vulnerability: The Case of Lisbon

3D city models associate a database of a city to a rigorous geospatial representation that is close to the visible reality by combining appearance, geometry, and semantics. As such, these models may include tools that convey attribute analysis, not only at the statistical level but also in terms of visual appearance of the objects, thus allowing the generation of new knowledge about a phenomenon or its effects. Lisbon is a city with a moderate level of seismic risk, and has been hit in the past by strong earthquakes. Several seismic vulnerability studies of buildings have been carried out in Lisbon. These studies generate different scenarios that consider the magnitude and source location of potential earthquakes. The results of these studies were presented as maps obtained from crossing information contained in 2D layers and presented in a GIS environment. In the present study a seismic vulnerability assessment of Lisbon's buildings held in 2D is extended to the third dimension, which refines the resolution and the set of parameters and explores the gains of spatial analysis in 3D representations. The numerous parameters that contribute to assess seismic vulnerability of buildings may be analyzed individually or simultaneously as well as in multiple seismic scenarios. Although covering all residential buildings in Lisbon, the application of the 3Dcity model is demonstrated with more detail in three pilot areas.

Assessing the estrogenic potency in a Portuguese wastewater treatment plant using an integrated approach

The estrogenic potency of a wastewater treatment plant （WWTP） was evaluated using chemical and biological analyses, which showed that after the station treatment processes some of the selected endocrine disruptor compounds （EDCs） were still present in the treated effluent （e.g., bisphenol A, alkylphenols, estrone）. Thus, the most common endocrine EDCs were identified and quantified and the overall estrogenicity of the treated effluent assessed by integrating the results. Male goldfish （Carassius auratus） were used as biological indicators in a 28-day experiment. Vitellogenin （Vtg）, gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, steroids （17β-estradiol and 11-ketotestosterone） and histopathology were biomarkers used in fish to evaluate WWTP treated effluent estrogenicity, in combination with instrumental analyses. The results showed a significant increase （P 〈 0.01） in plasma and liver Vtg, which were significantly correlated （r = 0.66; P 〈 0.01）. The gonadosmatic index was significantly （P 〈 0.01） reduced in exposed fish. The steroid analyses revealed significant elevations in 17β-estradiol and depressed 11-ketotestosterone concentrations. The histological examinations show changes in exposed fish gonads, such as regressed testes and in some cases （43% to 75%） the development of ovo-testis in fish exposed to 50% and 100% treated effluent.

Evolution of forest cover in Portugal: A review of the 12th–20th centuries

Portugal＇s forests in the 12th century were dominated by the Fagaceae represented by Quercus and Castanea, and several pine species From the 12th century onwards, forests underwent changes in their management starting with protection and ultimately leading to intense exploitation. The massive naval construction during the maritime expansion （mainly in the 15th-16th centuries） involved felling of approximately 5 million trees mainly Quercus suber, Pinus pinea and other Quercus species. Cumulative fuel-wood consumption of 959 Mm3 during 1300-1854 was attributed to demographic expansion while the deforestation rate during 1636-1854 accounted for a minimum of 72.6% and a maximum of 96% of total forest cover. The volume of timber used in railway sleepers from 1856 onwards might have reached 0.5 Mm3. The last quarter of the 20th century increased the forest cover of Portugal through the World Bank program of Eucalyptus globulus reforestation.
