Identifying factors affecting the survival of individuals is essential for understanding the evolution of life-history traits and population dynamics.despite numerous studies on this subject in north-temperate environments,there is a lack of equivalent studies at similar latitudes in the south.Here,we used a 14-year dataset of capture,banding,and resighting to estimate the annual variation in the apparent adult survival probability of a south-temperate population of House Wrens(Troglodytes aedon bonariae).We evaluated temporal variation in sur-vival and the effect of environmental(climatic)and demographic variables(adult abundance,total number of fledglings produced during each breeding season)on survival estimators.We found that the probability of adult survival decreased as the abundance of breeding adults increased.This density-dependent effect could be related to the resident lifestyle of southern House Wrens,which could determine an intense competition for territories and resources that ultimately would affect their survival.

This work applies stress tensors inversions and quantification of fracture patterns along the Mesa de los Santos, in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, to better understand the potential fluid flow. It thus contributes to the conceptual hydrogeological model. The area was subdivided into three blocks, separated by the NW Potreros and the los Santos faults, having minor inner faults of different orientations. This separation facilitates the analysis of the fractures measured in the field, which in general show high dip angles and a conjugate geometry in the northern block, tension fractures(Mode I) in the central block, and a random distribution in the southwestern block. WinTensor treatment of slickensides yielded a maximum horizontal stress(SHmax) of 111o, which coincides with the WNW-ESE tensor observed from the conjugate and tension joints. We then used Frac Pa Q to generate interpolation maps of fracture intensity and density. The maps show the highest values in the central block and the lowest in the northern block,where the precipitation is higher, causing intensive rock weathering and homogenization of the fracture planes. Although the highest values of connectivity by line are found to the south of the mesa, we suggest the possibility of greater flow from the recharge zone(NE) along bedding planes and open NW-SE fractures.

This paper presents the building process of an interactive instrument called the Colombian Solar Atlas able to easily visualize meteorological data but also assess the current and future potentials of solar photovoltaic generation throughout the whole territory of Colombia,South America.This new tool is based on two different meteorological databases.The first one is done with historical data extracted from satellite imagery information,and the other one corresponds to data issues from regional-scale climate change projection models.The satellite database was validated with different in-situ measurements.The Colombian Solar Atlas uses basic and advanced photovoltaic generation models to estimate the generation of a custom solar installation.With this tool,a user selects a point on the map and can have directly pertinent information to search for an optimal location with a spatial resolution of 4 km2.This tool is the first open interactive online tool particularly adapted to study the photovoltaic power potential in Colombia,considering the country’s needs and native language.

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)are associated with various hepatobiliary disorders.They can occur at any moment in the course of the disease or associated with the treatment.The prevalence of liver dysfunction can reach up to 50%in different studies.Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is considered the most common hepatobiliary complication in IBD,while primary sclerosing cholangitis is the most specific.Management of hepatic manifestations in IBD involves a multidisciplinary approach that includes a high index of suspicion and joint management with hepatologists.The medical confrontation with abnormal liver tests must include an exhaustive study to determine if these patterns can be related to IBD,associated diseases or to the therapies used.

Objective:To describe audiological symptoms,audiometric profile,and distortion product otoacoustic emission in symptomatic patients recovering from SARS-CoV-2 infection(positive RT-PCR test)and asymptomatic patients(negative RT-PCR test).Methods:An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using data obtained from clinical charts,physical examination,audiometry,and distortion product otoacoustic emission on 40 patients[case patients(CP)]recovering from SARS-CoV-2 infection diagnosed by a positive RT-PCR test and 22asymptomatic participants with a negative RT-PCR test[non-case(NC)].Results:Sixty-two patients(mean age:31.1 and 28.2 years in the CP and NC groups,respectively)were included.All participants were young without significant comorbidities,risk factors for hearing loss or otological history.Vertigo(5%),tinnitus(17.5%)and aural fullness/hearing loss(35%)were found in the CP group.A statistically significant difference was found in specific frequencies(1000,4000,and 8000 Hz)and pure tone average(low and high conversational frequencies with increased threshold in the PC group compared with the NC group),which was not found in distortion product otoacoustic emission.Conclusion:Audiovestibular symptoms are frequent in symptomatic patients recovering from SARS-CoV-2 infection.SARS-CoV-2 infection was consistently associated with an increased audiometric hearing threshold at specific frequencies and low tone average.

Enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins is a breakdown process of peptide bond in proteins,releasing some peptides with potential biological functions.Previous studies on enzymatic hydrolysis of whey proteins have not identified the complete peptide profiles after hydrolysis.In this study,we reconstructed a profile of peptides from whey hydrolysates with two enzymes and different processing conditions.We also developed an ensemble machine learning predictor to classify peptides obtained from whey hydrolysis.A total of 2572 peptides were identified over three process conditions with two enzymes in duplicate.499 peptides were classified and chosen as potential antioxidant peptides from whey proteins.The peptides classified as antioxidants in the hydrolysates had a proportion of 13.1%-24.5%regarding all peptides identified.These results facilitate the selection of promising peptides involved in the antioxidant properties during the enzymatic hydrolysis of whey proteins,aiding the discovery of novel antioxidant peptides.

Adsorption of Toxic Metals and Control of Mosquitos-borne Disease by Lysinibacillus sphaericus:Dual Benefits for Health and Environment

Objective Assessment of the bacterium L. sphaericus as a dual-action candidate for biological control of mosquito-borne diseases and bioremediation of toxic metals. Methods Larvae of the mosquito, C quinquefasciatus, were first evaluated for metal tolerance and then exposed to 5 ppm cadmium, chromium, arsenic, and lead in assays together with seven strains of L. sphaericus. A probit regression analysis was used to estimate the LCso of Cd, Cr, As, and Pb to C. quinquefosciatus. An analysis of covariance and multifactorial ANOVA examined the metal biosorption and larvicidal properties of the seven strains of L. sphaericus. Results We found that L. sphaericus adsorbed the toxic metal ions and was toxic against mosquito larvae. The L. sphoericus strain 111（3）7 resulted in a larvae mortality of over 80% for all the tested metals. This strain also exhibited the capacity to adsorb 76% of arsenic, 32% of lead, 25% of chromium, and 7% of cadmium. Conclusion This study found combined metal adsorption and larval toxicity associated with three strains of L. sphaericus [111（3）7, OT4b.31, and CBAM5]. This suggests that a combination of these strains shows strong dual potential for biological control of mosquitos in heavy metal-contaminated areas and remediate the heavy metal contamination as well.

Pressure drop is an essential parameter in the operation of conical spouted beds(CSB)and depends on its geometric factors and materials used.Irregular materials,like biomass,are complex to treat and,unlike other gas–solid contact methods,CSB turn out to be a suitable technology for their treatment.Artificial neural networks were used in this study for the prediction of operating and peak pressure drops,and their performance has been compared with that of empirical correlations reported in the literature.Accordingly,a multi-layer perceptron network with backward propagation was used due to its ability to model non-linear multivariate systems.The fitting of the experimental data of both operating and peak pressure drop was significantly better than those reported in the literature,specifically in the case of the peak pressure drop,with R^(2) being 0.92.Therefore,artificial neural networks have been proven suitable for the prediction of pressure drop in CSB.

A hierarchical approach for the energy management of geographically close microgrids connected through a dedicated AC power network is proposed in this paper.The proposed approach consists of a two-layer energy management system(EMS)for networked microgrids.In the lower layer,each micro grid solves its own economic dispatch problem through a distributed model predictive control approach that respects capacity limits and ramp-rate constraints of distributed generation.In the upper layer,the energy trading in the network of microgrids decides how to optimally trade the energy based on the marginal cost information from the lower layer in order to improve global optimization objectives,e.g.,social welfare.In order to solve the trading problem,a consensusbased algorithm and a replicator dynamics algorithm are proposed assuming that the marginal cost function of the microgrid is known and linear.It is shown that both algorithms converge to the same solution,which is equivalent to the minimization of operation costs.The consensus-based algorithm is extended in order to tackle more general marginal cost functions and trading network constraints.Moreover,the effect of ramp constraints and network limits is studied.Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for three interconnected microgrids with different characteristics.
