Evidence for Asian summer monsoon precipitation instability of the Younger Dryas phase

The loess and desert transitional zone of China responses sensitively to the Asian monsoon fluctuations. A high resolution loess-dust and aeolian sand-paleosols section records the climatic history of the Younger Dryas. Based upon AMS 14C dating of pollen concentrates and proxy climate indices including magnetic susceptibility, organic carbon content and grain size, it is demonstrated that the Asian monsoon climate manifests not only cooling as in other regions of the Northern Hemisphere, but also unusual oscillations in precipitation which were probably associated with atmospheric interactions between both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and atmospheric pressure anomalies of topic Pacific Ocean （ENSO）.

Applications of shear thickening fluids: a review

Shear thickening fluids (STFs) are a type of non-Newtonian fluids. In the equilibrium state, the STFs are in liquid-state. However, they become solid-state under a sudden strike or impact. And when the strike or impact is removed, the STFs can turn back to their equilibrium properties. This paper provides a detailed review on relevant literature related to the applications with shear thickening fluids. It introduced the factors affecting shear-thickening behaviour including volume fraction, particle size, particle shape, carrier fluid viscosity, temperature and some other factors.

Dear Editor Extracellular environment plays a role in regulating stem cell fates and three dimensional （3D） scaffolds can be utilized to mimic the internal environment in vitro. Currently, many types of cells have been cultured in 3D conditions but only few studies have focused on reprogramming in a 3D environment. 3D culture systems provide circumstances that can better simulate native conditions which are comprised of distinctive cell morphology, oxygen levels, extracellular matrix secretion and concentration gradients of signaling factors （Keung et al., 2010; Gu et al., 2016）.

A THIRD-ORDER BOUSSINESQ MODEL APPLIED TO NONLINEAR EVOLUTION OF SHALLOW-WATER WAVES

The conventional Boussinesq model is extended to the third order in dispersion and nonlinearity. The new equations are shown to possess better linear dispersion characteristics. For the evolution of periodic waves over a constant depth, the computed wave envelops are spatially aperiodic and skew. The model is then applied to the study of wave focusing by a topographical lens and the results are compared with Whalin′s (1971) experimental data as well as some previous results from the conventional Boussinesq model. Encouragingly, improved agreement with Whalin′s experimental data is found. [WT5”HZ]
