Primary forests are spatially diverse terrestrial ecosystems with unique characteristics,being naturally regenerative and heterogeneous,which supports the stability of their carbon storage through the accumulation of live and dead ***,little is known about the interactions between biomass stocks,tree genus diversity and structure across a temperate montane primary ***,we investigated the relationship between tree structure(variability in basal area and tree size),genus-level diversity(abundance,tree diversity)and biomass stocks in temperate primary mountain forests across Central and Eastern *** used inventory data from726 permanent sample plots from mixed beech and spruce across the Carpathian *** used nonlinear regression to analyse the spatial variability in forest biomass,structure,and genus-level diversity and how they interact with plot-level tree age,disturbances,temperature and *** found that the combined effects of genus and structural indices were important for addressing the variability in biomass across different spatial *** processes in disturbance regimes and uneven tree age support forest hete rogeneity and the accumulation of live and dead biomass through the natural regeneration,growth and decay of the forest *** complexities in basal area index,supporte d by genus-level abundance,positively influence total biomass stocks,which was modulated by tree age and *** forests showed higher tree density and basal area than mixed beech forests,though mixed beech still contributes significantly to biomass across *** heterogeneity was strongly influenced by complexities in forest composition(tree genus diversity,structure).We addressed the importance of primary forests as stable carbon stores,achieved through structure and *** such ecosystems is critical for ensuring the stability of the primary forest,carbon store and biodiversity into the future.

Marine heatwaves(MHWs)caused by anthropogenic climate change are becoming a key driver of change at the ecosystem *** conditions experienced by marine organisms across their distribution,particularly towards the equator,are likely to approach their physiological limits,resulting in extensive mortality and subsequent changes at the population *** at the margins of their species’distribution are thought to be more sensitive to climate-induced environmental pressures than central populations,but our understanding of variability in fitness-related physiological traits in trailing versus leading-edge populations is *** a laboratory simulation study,we tested whether two leading(Iceland)and two trailing(Spain)peripheral populations of the intertidal macroalga Corallina officinalis display different levels of maximum potential quantum efficiency(Fv/Fm)resilience to current and future winter MHWs *** study revealed that ongoing and future local winter MHWs will not negatively affect leading-edge populations of ***,which exhibited stable photosynthetic efficiency throughout the *** edge populations showed a positive though non-significant trend in photosynthetic efficiency throughout winter MHWs *** and equatorward populations did not produce significantly different results,with winter MHWs having no negative affect on Fv/Fm of either ***,we found no long-term regional or population-level influence of a winter MHWs on this species’photosynthetic ***,we found no statistically significant difference in thermal stress responses between leading and trailing ***,*** showed a trend towards higher stress responses in southern than northern *** responses rest on a variety of local population traits,they are difficult to predict based solely on thermal pressures.

Background In multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children(MIS-C),diagnostic delay could be associated with *** study aims to measure the time to diagnosis in MIS-C,assess its impact on the occurrence of cardiogenic shock,and specify its *** A single-center prospective cohort observational study was conducted between May 2020 and July 2022 at a tertiary care *** meeting the World Health Organization MIS-C criteria were included.A long time to diagnosis was defined as six days or *** on time to diagnosis were collected by two independent *** primary outcome was the occurrence of cardiogenic *** regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were used for outcomes,and a Cox proportional hazards model was used for *** Totally 60 children were assessed for inclusion,and 31 were finally analyzed[52%males,median age 8.8(5.7-10.7)years].The median time to diagnosis was 5.3(4.2-6.2)*** univariable analysis,age above the median,time to diagnosis,high C-reactive protein,and high N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide(NT-proBNP)were associated with cardiogenic shock[odds ratio(OR)6.13(1.02-36.9),2.79(1.15-6.74),2.08(1.05-4.12),and 1.70(1.04-2.78),respectively].In multivariable analysis,time to diagnosis≥6 days was associated with cardiogenic shock[adjusted OR(aOR)21.2(1.98-227)].Time to diagnosis≥6 days had a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 77% in predicting cardiogenic shock;the addition of age>8 years and NT-proBNP at diagnosis≥11,254 ng/L increased the specificity to 91%.Independent determinants of short time to diagnosis were age<8.8 years[aHR 0.34(0.13-0.88)],short distance to tertiary care hospital[aHR 0.27(0.08-0.92)],and the late period of the COVID-19 pandemic[aHR 2.48(1.05-5.85)].Conclusions Time to diagnosis≥6 days was independently associated with cardiogenic shock in *** diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid the use of inotropes and

Dexamethasone-loaded silicone matrices offer an interesting potential as innovative drug delivery systems,*** the treatment of inner ear diseases or for ***,very long drug release periods are targeted:several years/*** renders the development and optimization of novel drug products cumbersome:experimental feedback on the impact of the device design is obtained very slowly.A better understanding of the underlying mass transport mechanisms can help facilitating research in this field.A variety of silicone films were prepared in this study,loaded with amorphous or crystalline *** polymorphic drug forms were investigated,the film thickness was altered and the drug optionally partially/completely exchanged by much more water-soluble dexamethasone‘phosphate’.Drug release studies in artificial perilymph,scanning electron microscopy,optical microscopy,differential scanning calorimetry,X-ray diffraction and Raman imaging were used to elucidate the physical states of the drugs and polymer,and of the systems’structure as well as dynamic changes thereof upon exposure to the release *** particles were initially homogeneously distributed throughout the *** hydrophobicity of the matrix former very much limits the amounts of water penetrating into the system,resulting in only partial drug *** mobile drug molecules diffuse out into the surrounding environment,due to concentration ***,Raman imaging revealed that even very thin silicone layers(<20µm)can effectively trap the drug for prolonged periods of *** physical state of the drug(amorphous,crystalline)did not affect the resulting drug release kinetics to a noteworthy extent.

Development and validation of a thermally regulated atmospheric simulation chamber(THALAMOS): A versatile tool to simulate atmospheric processes

Atmospheric simulation chambers,are unique tools for investigating atmospheric processes in the gas and heterogeneous *** can provide a controlled yet realistic environment that simulates atmospheric *** the current study,a Teflon atmospheric simulation chamber of 600 L,named THALAMOS(thermally regulated atmospheric simulation chamber) has been developed and *** can be operated over the temperature range 233 to 373 K under both static and flow *** is equipped with state of the art instrumentation(selective ion flow tube mass spectrometry(SIFT-MS),long path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS),various analyzers) for the in-line monitoring of both reactants and *** was validated by measuring the rate coefficients of well documented reactions,*** reaction of ethanol with OH radicals and the reaction of dichloromethane with Cl atoms,in a wide temperature *** different detection techniques were used in parallel,FTIR and SIFT-MS,to internally cross-validate the obtained *** measured rate coefficients are in excellent agreement,both between each other and with the literature recommended ***,the gas phase oxidation of toluene by Cl atoms(kinetics and product yields) was studied in the temperature range of 253 to 333 *** the best of our knowledge,THALAMOS is a unique facility on national level and among a few smog chambers internationally that can be operated in such a wide temperature range providing the scientific community with a versatile tool to simulate both outdoor and indoor physicochemical processes.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) encodes a single polyprotein, which is processed by cellular and viral proteases to generate 10 polypeptides. The HCV genome also contains an overlapping +1 reading frame that may lead to the synthesis of an additional protein. Until recently, studies of HCV have been hampered by the lack of a productive cell culture system. Since the identification of HCV genome approximately 17 years ago, structural, biochemical and biological information on HCV proteins has mainly been obtained with proteins produced by heterologous expression systems. In addition, some functional studies have also been confirmed with replicon systems or with retroviral particles pseudotyped with HCV envelope glycoproteins. The data that have accumulated on HCV proteins begin to provide a framework for understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the major steps of HCV life cycle. Moreover, the knowledge accumulated on HCV proteins is also leading to the development of antiviral drugs among which some are showing promising results in early- phase clinical trials. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the functions and biochemical features of HCV proteins.

Intrauterine insemination with donor sperm:only the number of motile spermatozoa inseminated influences both pregnancy and live-birth rates

Intrauterine insemination with donor sperm(IUI-D)is an assisted reproductive technology(ART)offered to couples with definitive male infertility or risk of genetic disease ***,we sought to evaluate our practice in IUI-D and identify factors that influenced the success *** performed a retrospective,single-center study of all IUI-D procedures performed at lille university Medical Center(lille,France)between January 1,2007,and December 31,*** and multivariate analyses with a mixed logistic model were used to identify factors associated with clinical pregnancies and live *** included 322 couples and 1179 IUI-D *** clinical pregnancy rate was 23.5%,and the live birth rate was 18.9%per *** a multivariate analysis,the women’s age was negatively associated with the live birth *** number of motile spermatozoa inseminated was the only factor associated with both clinical pregnancies and live births,with a chosen threshold of 0.75 *** clinical pregnancy and live birth rates were,respectively,17.3%and 13.0%below the number of motile spermatozoa inseminated threshold and 25.9%and 21.0%at or above the threshold(all P=0.005).The number of motile spermatozoa inseminated was the only factor that significantly influenced both pregnancies and live-birth rates after ***,below a threshold of 0.75 million motile spermatozoa inseminated,those rates were significantly *** of this number of motile spermatozoa inseminated threshold may help centers to allocate donations more effectively while maintaining reasonable waiting times for patients.

Maximizing the Delivery of MPR Broadcasting Under Realistic Physical Layer Assumptions

It is now commonly accepted that the unit disk graph used to model the physical layer in wireless networks does not reflect real radio transmissions, and that a more realistic model should be considered for experimental simulations. Previous work on realistic scenarios has been focused on unicast, however broadcast requirements are fundamentally different and cannot be derived from the unicast case. Therefore, the broadcast protocols must be adapted in order to still be efficient under realistic assumptions. In this paper, we study the well-known multipoint relay broadcast protocol （MPR）, in which each node has to choose a set of 1-hop neighbors to act as relays in order to cover the whole 2-hop neighborhood. We give experimental results showing that the original strategy used to select these multipoint relays does not suit a realistic model. On the basis of these results, we propose new selection strategies solely based on link quality. One of the key aspects of our solutions is that our strategies do not require any additional hardware and may be implemented at the application layer, which is particularly relevant to the context of ad hoc and sensor networks where energy savings are mandatory. We finally provide new experimental results that demonstrate the superiority of our strategies under realistic physical assumptions.
