A survey of geothermal power generation combined with renewable energy for low carbon emissions

At present, industrial development is heavily dependent on traditional fossil energy, which has had an increasingly serious impact on the environment. Clean and renewable energy has received extensive attention and its proportion in daily life has gradually increased. As a clean and renewable energy source that is not affected by changes in weather and seasons, geothermal energy has developed rapidly in recent years and has received increasing attention. According to reports, the total installed capacity of geothermal power generation in the world in 2020 was 15 950 MW-an increase of similar to 27% over 2015. At the end of 2019, the total installed capacity for global geothermal direct use was 107 727 MW-an increase of 52.0% compared with 2015; the total annual energy use was 1 020 887 TJ (283 580 GWh)-an increase of 72.3% over 2015. Through the investigation of geothermal power generation technology in recent years, the characteristics and shortcomings of various power generation methods are analysed. At the same time, this review analyzes the characteristics of geothermal energy and other renewable-energy (solar energy, water energy) coupling power generation, and analyzes the principles and characteristics of geothermal energy and various new-energy coupling power generation methods. Through investigation and analysis, this review provides a complete understanding of various geothermal power generation technologies and provides insights into the future development direction. In this paper, we construct, analyze, and numerically validate a family of divergence-free virtual elements for Stokes equations with nonlinear damping on polygonal meshes. The virtual element method is H1-conforming and exact divergence-free. By virtue of these properties and the topological degree argument, we rigorously prove the well-posedness of the proposed discrete scheme. The convergence analysis is carried out, which imply that the error estimate for the velocity in energy norm does not explicitly depend on the pressure. Numerical experiments on various polygonal meshes validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the asymptotic pressure robustness of the proposed scheme.

Factors influencing farmers' adoption of solar water-pumping systems in Gujarat

Agriculture has played an important role in the growth of the Indian economy. Water and electricity are essential inputs for agriculture today. India produces the third-largest amount of electricity in the world, behind China and the USA. As an incentive to increase production, most states provide free electricity to farmers. Free electricity has decreased groundwater levels and increased electricity consumption. The objective of this study was to find out the factors that influenced farmers to adopt a solar water-pumping system in Gujarat. The samples were randomly selected. This study examined the entire state of Gujarat. One hundred and fifty farmers who adopted solar water-pumping systems were interviewed, including 50 banana farmers, 50 cotton farmers and 50 groundnut farmers. Primary data were collected through an interview. The adoption of solar water-pumping systems by farmers was identified using factor analysis. SPSS software was used to analyse the data collected. In this study, only two factors contributed to the variance of 59.469%. The adoption of solar water pumps by farmers was influenced by government policy and economic benefits. An economic benefit variance of 33.20% was found, while a government policy variance was 26.27%. A solar water-pumping system has low initial costs, flexible credit policies motivate adoption, solar water-pumping systems can save electricity, and maintenance and repair costs are affordable. Government policy that includes solar water-pumping systems is motivated by awareness, subsidies for adoption and a fair price to sell energy surpluses. Farmers are recommended to adopt a solar water-pumping system in conjunction with a drip irrigation system to receive additional income. The successful scheme will be recommended to other states in India for implementation. Web3, the next generation of the Internet, represents a decentralized and democratized web. Although it has garnered significant public interest and found numerous real-world applications, there is a limited understanding of people's perceptions and experiences with Web3. In this study, we conducted an empirical study to investigate the categories of Web3 applications and their popularity, as well as the potential challenges and opportunities within this emerging landscape. Our research was carried out in two phases. In the first phase, we analyzed 200 popular Web3 projects associated with 10 leading Web3 venture capital firms. In the second phase, we collected and examined code-related data from GitHub and market-related data from blockchain browsers (e.g., Etherscan) for these projects. Our analysis revealed that the Web3 ecosystem can be categorized into two groups, i.e., Web3 infrastructure and Web3 applications, with each consisting of several subcategories or subdomains. We also gained insights into the popularity of these Web3 projects at both the code and market levels and pointed out the challenges in the Web3 ecosystem at the system, developer, and user levels, as well as the opportunities it presents. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of Web3 for researchers and developers, which in turn promotes further exploration and advancement in this innovative field.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered the ideal choice for high volumetric energy density lithium-ion batteries, but uncontrolled lithium deposition poses a significant challenge to the stability of such devices. In this paper, we introduce a 2.5 mu m-thick asymmetric and ultrastrong separator, which can induce tissue-like lithium deposits. The asymmetric separator, denoted by utPE@Cu2O, was prepared by selective synthesis of Cu2O nanoparticles on one of the outer surfaces of a nanofibrous (diameter similar to 10 nm) ultrastrong ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) membrane. Microscopic analysis shows that the lithium deposits have tissue-like morphology, resulting in the symmetric lithium cells assembled using utPE@Cu2O with symmetric Cu2O coating exhibiting stable performance for over 2000 h of cycling. This work demonstrates the feasibility of a facile approach ultrathin separators for the deployment of lithium metal batteries, providing a pathway towards enhanced battery performance and safety.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) after undergoing the superlithiation process promise high-capacity anodes while suffering from sluggish reaction kinetics and low electrochemical utilization of redox-active sites. Herein, integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was rationally executed by in-situ Schiff-base condensation between 1,1 '-biphenyl]-3,3 ',5,5 '-tetracarbaldehyde and 1,4-diaminobenzene in the presence of CNTs to produce core-shell heterostructured composites (CNT@COF). Accordingly, the redox-active shell of COF nanoparticles around one-dimensional conductive CNTs synergistically creates robust three-dimensional hybrid architectures with high specific surface area, thus promoting electron transport and affording abundant active functional groups accessible for electrochemical utilization throughout the whole electrode. Remarkably, upon the full activation with a superlithiation process, the as-fabricated CNT@COF anode achieves a specific capacity of 2324 mAh g-1, which is the highest specific capacity among organic electrode materials reported so far. Meanwhile, the superior rate capability and excellent cycling stability are also obtained. The redox reaction mechanisms for the COF moiety were further revealed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, involving the reversible redox reactions between lithium ions and C=N groups and gradual electrochemical activation of the unsaturated C=C bonds within COFs. Coupling conductive carbon nanotubes with redox-active imine-linked covalent organic frameworks generates core-shell heterostructures capable of building 3D hierarchical architectures with fully exposed active sites for boosting anodic lithium storage. image

High-capacity nickel-rich layered oxides are promising cathode materials for high-energy-density lithium batteries. However, the poor structural stability and severe side reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface result in unsatisfactory cycle performance. Herein, the thin layer of two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon-nitride (g-C3N4) is uniformly coated on the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (denoted as NCM811@CN) using a facile chemical vaporization-assisted synthesis method. As an ideal protective layer, the g-C3N4 layer effectively avoids direct contact between the NCM811 cathode and the electrolyte, preventing harmful side reactions and inhibiting secondary crystal cracking. Moreover, the unique nanopore structure and abundant nitrogen vacancy edges in g-C3N4 facilitate the adsorption and diffusion of lithium ions, which enhances the lithium deintercalation/intercalation kinetics of the NCM811 cathode. As a result, the NCM811@CN-3wt% cathode exhibits 161.3 mAh g(-1) and capacity retention of 84.6% at 0.5 C and 55 degrees C after 400 cycles and 95.7 mAh g(-1) at 10 C, which is greatly superior to the uncoated NCM811 (i.e. 129.3 mAh g(-1) and capacity retention of 67.4% at 0.5 C and 55 degrees C after 220 cycles and 28.8 mAh g(-1) at 10 C). The improved cycle performance of the NCM811@CN-3wt% cathode is also applicable to solid-liquid-hybrid cells composed of PVDF:LLZTO electrolyte membranes, which show 163.8 mAh g(-1) and the capacity retention of 88.1% at 0.1 C and 30 degrees C after 200 cycles and 95.3 mAh g(-1) at 1 C.

Numerous researchers in the energy field are engaged in a competitive race to advance hydrogen as a clean and environmentally friendly fuel. Studies have been conducted on the different aspects of hydrogen, including its production, storage, transportation and utilization. The catalytic methane decomposition technique for hydrogen production is an environmentally friendly process that avoids generating carbon dioxide gas, which contributes to the greenhouse effect. Catalysts play a crucial role in facilitating rapid, cost-effective and efficient production of hydrogen using this technique. In this study, reactive molecular dynamics simulations were employed to examine the impact of Pt-7 cluster decoration on the surface of a Ni (110) catalyst, referred to as Pt-7-Ni (110), on the rates of methane dissociation and molecular hydrogen production. The reactive force field was employed to model the atomic interactions that enabled the formation and dissociation of chemical bonds. Our reactive molecular dynamics simulations using the Pt-7-Ni (110) catalyst revealed a notable decrease in the number of methane molecules, specifically similar to 11.89 molecules per picosecond. The rate was approximately four times higher than that of the simulation system utilizing a Ni (110) catalyst and approximately six times higher than that of the pure methane, no-catalyst system. The number of hydrogen molecules generated during a simulation period of 150 000 fs was greater on the Pt-7-Ni (110) surface than in both the Ni (110) and pure methane systems. This was due to the presence of numerous dissociated hydrogen atoms on the Pt-7-Ni (110) surface. [GRAPHICS] .

Iron ore pellets are the main feedstock in ironmaking processes. While extensive research has addressed numerical modeling of the iron ore pellet induration process, little effort has been made to describe the intricate thermochemical processes occurring within the reactor starting from the pellet and particularly at the intra-particle scale. In this regard, discrete-continuous methods like CFD-DEM can generate more realistic, irregular particle assemblies, which leads to significantly more accurate predictions of voidage variation, wall effects, temperature distribution, and associated mass transfer phenomena. This study presents a numerical model based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with the discrete element method (DEM) to simulate the thermal induration process of iron ore pellets. The presented model solving heat, mass, and momentum conservation equations for both continuous and discrete phases, provides detailed information on the thermochemical aspects of the process. Pilot-scale induration experiment was conducted to validate model predictions in terms of thermal history and final conversion fraction. It was found that inlet charge specifications, such as particle and pellet size, significantly impact the productivity of pelletizing plants, highlighting the potential of the presented model to optimize the process and improve plant productivity.
