Medication Reconciliation at the Admission of the Medical Emergency unit of Teaching Pediatric Hospital of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Introduction and Problem Statement: Many medication errors occur during the community and hospital transition. Indeed, the World Health Organization launched the international “High 5S” project to implement medication reconciliation in healthcare facilities to reduce them and ensure patients a safe, high-quality healthcare pathway. Objective: This study aimed to detect medication errors by reconciling drug treatments and assess the relevance and feasibility of this standardized practice within the Medical Emergency unit of the Teaching Pediatric Hospital of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso). Methods: Patients whose parents gave their consent at their entrance were enrolled. For each patient, the pharmacy team completed a reconciliation form that included the patient’s usual treatment, which was taken and in progress and received upon admission to the medical emergency unit. Patients’ treatments were reviewed to detect and characterize discrepancies. The data of each form were reported and analyzed using KoboCollect, an Android application. Results: 135 records and 412 medication lines were captured over six weeks. The average time of treatment reconciliation per patient was 57 minutes. One thousand one hundred ninety-eight (1198) intentional discrepancies were detected, of which 6.09% were documented. Seventy-one (71) unintentional discrepancies were collected, including 39 omissions, 24 regimen dosing errors, and 8 pharmaceutical form dosage errors. Forty-nine (49) unintentional discrepancies, or 69.01%, were corrected by formulated pharmaceutical interventions toward physicians. Conclusion: Medical treatment reconciliation during hospital admission is critical because discrepancies can compromise the efficacy and/or safety of the patient’s hospital medication.

The objective of this study is to propose an optimal plant design for blue hydrogen production aboard a liquefiednatural gas(LNG)*** investigation focuses on integrating two distinct processes—steam methanereforming(SMR)and ship-based carbon capture(SBCC).The first refers to the common practice used to obtainhydrogen from methane(often derived from natural gas),where steam reacts with methane to produce hydrogenand carbon dioxide(CO_(2)).The second refers to capturing the CO_(2) generated during the SMR process on *** capturing and storing the carbon emissions,the process significantly reduces its environmental impact,making the hydrogen production“blue,”as opposed to“grey”(which involves CO_(2) emissions without capture).For the SMR process,the analysis reveals that increasing the reformer temperature enhances both the processperformance and CO_(2) ***,a higher steam-to-carbon(s/c)ratio reduces hydrogen yield,therebydecreasing thermal *** study also shows that preheating the air and boil-off gas(BOG)before theyenter the combustion chamber boosts overall efficiency and curtails CO_(2) *** the SBCC process,puremonoethanolamine(MEA)is employed to capture the CO_(2) generated by the exhaust gases from the SMR *** results indicate that with a 90%CO_(2) capture rate,the associated heat consumption amounts to 4.6 MJ perkilogram of CO_(2) *** combined approach offers a viable pathway to produce blue hydrogen on LNGcarriers while significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

From a harmonized structural map at the scale of a portion of SW Burkina Faso (90 × 80 km2), we targeted prospective zones on the basis of structural criteria and structure-geology relationships. The map was constructed from an aeromagnetic image, and the geology was deduced from old geological maps. The procedure involved extracting the magnetic fabric and deducing the deformation gradients, which led to the identification of shear zones. Analysis and interpretation of the structural geometry of the obtained structural pattern led us to target areas of interference between structures or geology-structures interplays, which are conducive to the deposition of metallic elements. The subsequent overlay of known gold prospects and deposits documented in the region revealed the validity of the predefined prospects. This result reinforces the applicability of the methodology as a first-order regional approach to mineral exploration.

DNA testing for biological relationships is becoming increasingly common in Burkina Faso. STR analysis remains the most reliable technique for resolving disputes or claims in court regarding biological relationships. This study aimed to establish the links of biological relationships between subjects by analyzing 21 STR loci. The participants were 14 individuals referred to CERBA by the Justice in 2022. Oral or blood samples were taken for each subject. DNA was extracted, and the analysis of DNA polymorphism by PowerPlex® 21 Kit (Part No. DC8902) was performed by capillary electrophoresis on the ABI PRISM 3130 sequencer. DNA profiles were compiled using the GeneMapper IDX software version 1.2. Of the fourteen subjects examined, twelve of these samples had complete genetic profiles, while the other two had partial and absent profiles. The results confirmed the inclusion of three cases of Paternity, one case of maternity, one case of a relationship of brotherhood, and the exclusion of one case of maternity and one case of a relationship of brotherhood. DNA tests improve the resolution of filiations, but they require ethical and cultural awareness and a strengthened legal framework to prevent and protect society.

The comparative study of electrical and hydrogeological soundings is being carried out on the site of the Jean Lorougnon Guédé University in Daloa, in central-western Côte d’Ivoire. The aim of this study is to determine the similarities in the weathering profile obtained by the hydrogeological surveys and the electrical surveys. The methodology is based on a comparative study of the characteristics of the weathering profile (number of layers, thickness of weathering and number of water inlets). The results show that the electrical sounding curves are of the KH type, giving 4 geological layers. The first layer corresponds to topsoil with a thickness of less than 1 m. The second corresponds to a thicker lateritic clay formation (20 m on average). The third layer is granitic arena, locally up to 30 m thick. Below this is the fractured granitic basement. The results also show that most of the results from the electrical boreholes are consistent with those from the boreholes. Differences exist and are essentially due to the shape of certain electrical sounding curves and to the driller’s assessment of the interfaces between the geological formations.

In this study, we examined variability of sun-related energies, auroral electrojet current, ring current, and magnetopause current during solar cycles 23 and 24. The study revealed a dependence of sun-related energies to the Sun and Earth currents systems with solar activity from 1996 to 2019. A decrease in the correlation between sun-related energies and sunspot number was observed over solar cycles 23 and 24 (0.88 for the solar cycle 23 and 0.66 for the solar cycle 24), with a drop in the speed of magnetic disturbances in the solar wind. These results could be attributed to the decrease in Sun’s magnetic field toroidal component magnitude induced by a weak in sunspots number and solar flares during the solar cycle 24. A weak in the Earth currents systems (auroral electrojet current, ring current, and magnetopause current) is also observed. During the decrease in the Earth currents, several peaks are observed, indicating a nonlinear dependence in the Earth currents variation (ring current, auroral electrojet current, and magnetopause current) from solar cycle 23 to solar cycle 24. This could be attributed to the Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) observed during the declining phase of solar cycle 23 and the deep minimum preceding solar cycle 24.

On the Occurrence of Different Classes of Solar Flares during the Solar Cycles 23 and 24

In this study we review the occurrence of different types (A, B, C, M, and X classes) of solar flares during different solar cycle phases from 1996 to 2019 covering the solar cycles 23 and 24. During this period, a total of 19,126 solar flares were observed regardless the class: 3548 flares in solar cycle 23 (SC23) and 15,668 flares in solar cycle 24 (SC24). Our findings show that the cycle 23 has observed the highest occurrences of M-class and X-class flares, whereas cycle 24 has pointed out a predominance of B-class and C-class flares throughout its different phases. The results indicate that the cycle 23 was magnetically more intense than cycle 24, leading to more powerful solar flares and more frequent geomagnetic storms, capable of generating significant electromagnetic emissions that can affect satellites and GPS signals. The decrease in intense solar flares during cycle 24 compared to cycle 23 reflects an evolution in solar activity patterns over time.

Salinity stress is a major challenge for global agriculture,particularly in arid and semi-arid regions,limiting plant productivity due to water and soil *** conditions particularly affect countries along the southern Mediterranean rim,including Algeria,which primarily focuses on pastoral and forage *** study investigates salinity tolerance and ecotypic variability in Vicia narbonensis L.,a fodder legume species recognized for its potential to reclaim marginal ***,physiological,and biochemical responses were assessed in three ecotypes(eco2,eco9,and eco10)exposed to different salinity levels(low,moderate,and severe).The study was conducted using a completely randomized block design with three blocks per ecotype per *** results from the two-way analysis of variance demonstrate significant effects across nearly all attributes studied,revealing distinct ecotypic *** findings underscore variations in growth parameters,osmotic regulation mechanisms,and biochemical *** substantial diversity observed among these ecotypes in their response to salinity provides valuable insights for breeders addressing both agronomic and ecological *** analyses,including Principal Component Analysis(PCA),revealed key variables distinguishing between ecotypes under salinity ***,Classification based on Salinity Tolerance Indices(STI)further differentiated ecotypic performance with more precision,and this is because of the combination of the different parameters *** results open up new prospects for the development of strategies to improve the salinity tolerance of forage legumes.

A Year-Round Study of Water Vapor, Energy and Net Ecosystem Exchanges in a Young Oil Palm Field in Dangbo, Bénin

In 2022, an eddy covariance site was established in a young oil palm plantation in southeast Dangbo, Bénin, to study the exchange of CO2, energy, and water vapor. This study aims to present the first one-year analysis of seasonal dynamics in energy balance components and net ecosystem exchange above this type of ecosystem in Africa. The first results show that on average during the 2023 year, 55% of net radiation is consumed into actual evapotranspiration, demonstrating the significant amount of latent heat flux in the energy balance, as expected at this tropical humid site. The sensible heat flux was substantial, ranging between 60 and 200 W·m−2, while net radiation varied between 440 and 650 W·m−2. Carbon uptake and net release of CO2 into the atmosphere were permanent at the site. However, the CO2 uptake increases more when rainy events become regular. On average, the mean nighttime CO2 flux was ~8 µmol·m−2·s−1, while during the daytime it was ~−20 µmol·m−2·s−1.

Valorization of Ubiquitous Plant Species Used as Food Packaging in Benin: A Sustainable Solution to Improve Quality of Life and Protect the Environment

Vegetal leaves play a significant role in the daily lives of populations in developing countries. This study aimed to highlight the plant species used as food packaging in southern Benin. A survey questionnaire was administered in local markets, and informed consent was obtained from native guides. Data were processed using Google Forms, and a phytochemical screening was conducted on the sampled species. A total of 311 individuals, including elders, vendors, and consumers, participated in the survey. The most commonly used plant species identified were Tectona grandis, Thalia geniculata, Musa sapientum, Gmelina arborea, Manihot esculenta, and Terminalia catappa. Several reasons, primarily cultural, explain the preference for these species. Notably, Tectona grandis and Musa sapientum demonstrated superior morphological, physical, and organoleptic qualities, measuring 79 cm by 53.5 cm and over 2 m by 50 cm, respectively. They accounted for 33.33% and 32.35% of usage. Additionally, fermented corn paste, making up over 53% of offerings, was the most popular food item. The mechanical properties of these leaves, such as flexibility, toughness, and relative impermeability, along with identified phytochemicals like terpenes, alkaloids, gallic acid, flavonoids, and coumarins, enhance food preservation and limit microbial activity. Promoting the use of these natural packaging materials over plastic alternatives could significantly reduce environmental pollution and mitigate the risks associated with toxic microorganisms in food, contributing to both ecological health and food safety.
