Interpreting siliciclastic sedimentation in the upper Paleozoic Mulargia-Escalaplano Basin(Sardinia, Italy):influence of tectonics on provenance

Late to post-Variscan molassic basins of Late Pennsylvanian-Permian age are exposed in Sardinia(Italy). Here, the compositional and stratigraphic evolution of the Mulargia-Escalaplano sedimentary basin(central Sardinia) has been investigated to highlight how the tectono-magmatic processes have influenced the sedimentation. Ruditic and arenitic samples were collected along well-characterized stratigraphic sections to provide a new insight into the impact of the tectono-magmatic processes on siliciclastic sedimentation. As a result, the conglomerates are mainly clast-supported, petromictic, and thus immature, with no defined maturity trend upwards. Nevertheless, pebble composition changes in times from Variscan basement pebble-rich to volcanic rock-rich, as a consequence of the basin widening and the dismantling and reworking of the coeval volcanic activity. The sandstone composition clearly changes from quartzolithic to feldspatholithic upwards, as a response to the same change of feeding and reworking of the volcanic rocks. Occasionally, interbedded quartzolithic arenites suggest exceptional floods carrying debris from the far borders of the basin. Also, the immature sandstone composition has been interpreted as being controlled by a continuous supply of fresh debris and to a rapid burial rate. In addition, the disappearance of metaradiolarite(lydite AA) Paleozoic grains in the sandstone mineral suite could represent a distinctive marker of a progressive unroofing of the Variscan chain and a clastic supply from deeper tectonic units.

The replacement of Li by Na in an analogue battery to the commercial Li-ion one appears a sustainable strategy to overcome the several concerns triggered by the increased demand for the electrochemical energy ***,the apparently simple change of the alkali metal represents a challenging step which requires notable and dedicated ***,we investigate herein the features of a NaFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(NFMP)cathode with triphylite structure achieved from the conversion of a LiFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(LFMP)olivine for application in Na-ion *** work initially characterizes the structure,morphology and performances in sodium cell of NFMP,achieving a maximum capacity exceeding 100 mAh g^(−1)at a temperature of 55℃,adequate rate capability,and suitable retention confirmed by ex-situ ***,the study compares in parallel key parameters of the NFMP and LFMP such as Na^(+)/Li^(+)ions diffusion,interfacial characteristics,and reaction mechanism in Na/Li cells using various electrochemical *** data reveal that relatively limited modifications of NFMP chemistry,structure and morphology compared to LFMP greatly impact the reaction mechanism,kinetics and electrochemical *** changes are ascribed to the different physical and chemical features of the two compounds,the slower mobility of Na^(+)with respect to Li^(+),and a more resistive electrode/electrolyte interphase of sodium compared with ***,the study reveals analogue trends of the charge transfer resistance and the ion diffusion coefficient in NFMP and LFMP during the electrochemical process in ***,the NFMP achieved herein is suggested as a possible candidate for application in a low-cost,efficient,and environmentally friendly Na-ion battery.

With the increasing penetration of DC systems into the high voltage and medium voltage power industry,DC voltage is becoming common for distribution/transmission and to supply different typologies of *** allowable extent of AC ripple superimposed to DC,and its effect on insulation ageing,is a long-term discussed *** most harmful phenomenon causing extrinsic ageing acceleration and insulation system premature failure is partial discharges(PD);thus,the risk of incepting PD due to AC ripple could become a primary issue for electrical asset equipment *** this work,the impact of AC sinusoidal ripple on insulation system life and reliability is dealt with,considering both intrinsic and extrinsic ageing but focusing on the latter,that is,the PD *** are performed to assess how the jump voltage(due to AC ripple)and the DC component impact on PD activity in terms of amplitude and repetition *** the first time,the correlation between the magnitude of jump voltage associated with ripple and PD inception is established,shedding a light on the allowable ripple extent which does not impact significantly on ageing and premature insulation *** approach can provide straightforward tools for design specification and ageing inference of insulation systems.

Pregnancy is a unique physiological state in which several changes *** of the most important aspects is the maternal immune system,which sets to tolerate the presence of thedeveloping fetus(a semi-allogeneic organism),while at the same time providing protection against pathogens.1 Pregnancy has long been known to affect the risk of certain cancers including breast cancer in the short term,gestational trophoblastic disease(GTD),cervical cancer,and melanoma.2,3 The reasons for the increased risk of these cancers during pregnancy are not fully understood,but several hypotheses have been proposed as the hormonal and immune system changes.

The study of the relationship between animal stress and personality for free-ranging animals is limited and provides contrasting *** perception of stressors by an individual may vary due to its personality,and certain personality traits may help individuals to better cope with *** non-invasive infrared thermography(IRT),we investigated the link between physiological and behavioral components expressed during an acute stress event by free-ranging Fremont’s squirrels(Tamiasciurus fremonti).We expected that,during the acute stress event of being approached by the researcher,individuals that showed a fast pace-of-life syndrome(bolder,more active,and less social/more aggressive)based on an arena test would exhibit stronger sympathetic-adrenal-medullary system reactivity showing a more intense stress-induced hyperthermia(high core body temperature and low peripheral temperature)than individuals with a slow pace of life(shy,less active,and more social).We successfully employed IRT technology to images of Fremont’s squirrels with identification of the individuals’body parts(eye,nose,ear,hind foot).However,we found no support for our ***’body surface temperatures told us more about a squirrel’s external environment and less about the thermal state of the body in that environment following a stressful *** studies need to assess how to make IRT effective and efficient in the field and improve its performance in studying the relationships between physiology and personality in wildlife.

Statistical analysis of physico-mechanical parameters of sandstones occurring in orogenic settings

In northeastern Sicily(Italy),sandstone rock masses widely crop out as cover deposits over crystalline terrains belonging to the orogenic *** being part of the same geological formation,these sandstones are characterized by highly different features in terms of texture and physico-mechanical *** poses a scientific question on the possibility of tracing these rocks to a single statistical model,which could be representative of their main engineering geological ***,it is worth investigating on the possible reasons of such differences,that should be searched either in the current geographical sandstone distribution or in the rock *** this study,sandstone samples were collected from different sites and were analyzed at both the hand and thin section *** sandstone types were recognized,characterized by a different ***,the laboratory characterization allowed estimating their main physico-mechanical and ultrasonic properties,such as porosity,density,mechanical strength,deformability,and ultrasonic *** rock mechanical strength proved linked to the rock compactness and to the presence of lithic fragments,while pores and a pseudo-matrix between grains represent weakening *** data were also statistically analyzed by grouping the specimens according to a geographical criterion,with respect to their sampling area,but no link was found between location and rock ***,with the aim of achieving mathematical laws that could be used to predict some rock properties from others,useful for practical purposes when dealing with such a high property variability,single and multiple regression analyses were carried *** show that the Uniaxial Compressive Strength,porosity,and P-wave velocity are the best predictors for a quick,indirect estimation of the main physico-mechanical *** methodological approach developed for this research can be taken as reference to study other world

In the Alpine Corsica(France),the Santa Lucia Nappe represents a peculiar unit preserving the unique relicts of Paleozoic lower to medium continental *** consists of composite basement affected by Permian granulite facies metamorphic conditions unconformably covered by a Late Cretaceous clastic sequence(Tomboni Conglomerate and Tralonca Flysch)affected by polyphase deformation and *** this work,we present a new reconstruction of the deformation events registered by the Tralonca Flysch during the Alpine *** D1 phase was testified by rare isoclinal *** D2 phase produced a continuous foliation and a map-scale sheath-fold with a top-to-W sense of *** D3 phase produced E-verging non-cylindrical folds and S3 crenulation cleavage that is not associated to metamorphic *** present the first temperature-pressure-deformation(P-T-d)path for the Tralonca Flysch,demonstrating that the Santa Lucia Nappe underwent accretion and then first stage exhumation in the Alpine wedge during the D1 phase with pressure and temperature peaks both occurred under blueschist metamorphic *** D2 phase occurred at lower pressure-temperature conditions during a second stage *** pressure-temperaturedeformation path is comparable with those of the Lower units(i.e.,the subducted continental units of Alpine Corsica)suggesting a common geodynamic history.

Exact and heuristic formulae to compute the geodetic height from the ellipse equation

The conversion of the cartesian coordinates of a point to its geodetic equivalent coordinates in reference to the geodetic ellipsoid is one of the main challenges in *** ellipse equation in the meridian plane significantly influences the value of the geodetic *** research analyzes this influence and how it can contribute to their *** study investigates the mathematical relation between them and presents an exact formula relating to the geodetic height and the ellipse *** addition,a heuristic formula for the relation between the geodetic height and the ellipse equation is proposed,which is independent of the geodetic latitude and has a relative accuracy better than 99.9 %.The calculation is stable,and the cost is low.
