Invasive species have potentially devastating effects on ecological communi- ties and ecosystems. To understand the invasion process of exotic forest pests in South korea, we reviewed four major species of exotic forest pests： the pine needle gall midge （Thecodiplosis japonensis）, pine wilt disease caused by the pine wood nematode （Bur- saphelenchus xylophilus）, the fall webworm （Hyphantria cunea） and the black pine bast scale （Matsucoccus thunbergianae）. We consider their biology, ecology, invasion history, dispersal patterns and related traits, and management as exotic species. Among these species, the dispersal process of fall webworm was linear, showing a constant range expan- sion as a function of time, whereas the other three species showed biphasic patterns, rapidly increasing dispersal speed after slow dispersal at the early invasion stage. Moreover, human activities accelerated their expansion, suggesting that prevention of the artificial movement of damaged trees would be useful to slow expansion of exotic species. We believe that this information would be useful to establish management strategies for invasion species.

Feasibility study on the DFP adoption of medical cyclotron decommissioning in the Republic of korea

Since the development of positron emission tomography in 1937, the number of medical cyclotrons used in producing radioisotopes (RI) has risen sharply. In its operation, the structural materials of a medical cyclotron and the concrete shielding of its vault are activated by neutrons. In analyzing domestic and international decommissioning practices, the dismantling characteristics of medical cyclotrons result in a large amount of radioactive wastes, such as concrete, although their activity level is very low. In the United States, the dismantling plan must be established by the applicant. The decommissioning funding plan (DFP) is a financial assurance demonstration based on a site-specific cost estimate of decommissioning the facility. In 10 CFR 30.35, NRC requires the submission of DFP in the case of the possession and use of unsealed byproduct materials with a half-life of greater than 120 days and in quantities exceeding 105 times that of the applicable quantities. The dismantling of the Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) cyclotron (TR-13) was performed in December 2012. Some of the risks resulting from this dismantling are related to radioactive wastes, as well as issues concerning dismantling costs. Hence, we propose introducing the DFP at the authorization stage. DFP will be helpful in preparing reliable decommissioning plans for safe decommissioning and unexpected early decommissioning in the future. DFP can also contribute in reducing radioactive waste and in decreasing the decommissioning cost by preventing excessive establishments. This study provided an overview of the decommissioning aspects of the SNUH cyclotron and the necessity of adopting the DFP for decommissioning medical cyclotrons. © 2014, Science Press. This study analyzes change in carbon storage by applying forest growth models and final cutting age to actual and potential forest cover for six major tree species in South korea. Using National Forest Inventory data, the growth models were developed to estimate mean diameter at breast height, tree height, and number of trees for Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida, Larix kaernpferi, Castanea crenata and Quercus spp. stands. We assumed that actual forest cover in a forest type map will change into potential forest covers according to the Hydrological and Thermal Analogy Groups model. When actual forest cover reaches the final cutting age, forest volume and carbon storage are estimated by changed forest cover and its growth model. Forest volume between 2010 and 2110 would increase from 126.73 to 157.33 m^3 hm^-2. Our results also show that forest cover, volume, and carbon storage could abruptly change by 2060. This is attributed to the fact that most forests are presumed to reach final cutting age. To avoid such dramatic change, a regeneration and yield control scheme should be prepared and implemented in a way that ensures balance in forest practice and yield.

Understanding obesity in children is crucial because it can lead to adulthood obesity and result in fatal chronic diseases. Distinctive factors associated with obesity in adults have been described, but distinctive factors related to children remain unclear. We analyzed the correlation between the percentage of body mass index and lifestyle habits by conducting surveys on physical, nutritional, and psychological factors, and we used annual physical examination data to compare different traits among elementary school students (n = 197) and middle school students (n = 461). Our study revealed that the computing hours in elementary school students with overweight and obesity were significantly correlated with the percentage of body mass index (r = 0.29 on school days and r = 0.35 on days off, all P 0.05) in the computing hours of middle school students with overweight and obesity. Childhood obesity can cause depression and reduce children’s quality of life because of their distorted body perception. In conclusion, physical factors directly affecting childhood obesity and psychological and environmental factors surrounding a child should be considered.

This study investigates the relationship between the summer monsoon rainfall over korea and India, by using correlation analysis and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD).Results reveal that summer monsoon rainfall over korea is negatively (significant at the 99% level) cor-related with the rainfall over the northwest and central parts of India. In addition, coupled spatial modes be-tween the rainfall over korea and India have been identified by the SVD analysis. The squared covariance fraction explained by the first mode is 70% and the correlation coefficient between the time coefficients of the two fields is significant at the 99% level, indicating that the coupled mode reflects a large part of the interaction between the summer monsoon rainfall over korea and India. The first mode clearly demon-strates the existence of a significant negative correlation between the rainfall over the northwest and central parts of India and the rainfall over *** mechanisms of this correlation are investigated by analyzing the variation of upper-level at-mospheric circulation associated with the Tibetan high using NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data.

We used preliminary data to estimate the growth volume of artificially reforested Pinus densiflora in a post-fire area on three different contour conditions. We compared the growth of P. densiflora on a south-facing slope(Ssth), north-facing slope(Snth) and ridge area(Ridge), using 7 trees selected from each stand aspect. The tree height, diameter and growth volume were measured and the dry weight of each plant part were compared and analyzed. The results revealed that the total dry weight was highest on Ssth(5992.3 g), followed by Snth(4833.2 g) and lowest on Ridge(3160.1 g). The height growth was highest on Snth(285.8 cm), followed by Ssth(274.5 cm) and lowest on Ridge(211.5 cm). The diameter growth was greatest on Ssth(7.37 cm), followed by Snth(7.10 cm) and lowest on Ridge(5.72 cm). The volume growth was highest on Ssth(4257.7 cm3), followed by Snth(3750.7 cm3) and lowest on Ridge(2093.7 cm3). Therefore, we should consider and include the concept of slope orientation together with differences in habitat environments in afforestation projects when creating artificial forests with P. densiflora. These study results can serve as important preliminary data for future establishment of artificial forest of P. densiflora in a post-fire plantation.

Geese have undergone significant changes in their distribution and population size due to human-induced *** improve our understanding of the two main geese populations in East Asia—Greater White-fronted(Anser albifrons;GWFG)and Bean Geese(Anser fabalis sensu lato;BEAG),which includes the Tundra ***(TDBG)and Taiga Bean Geese ***(TGBG),this study estimated their long-and short-term trends and the migration strategies based on their distribution during the migratory and wintering seasons,using nationwide census data collected over 24 years in South *** TRIM(TRends and Indices for Monitoring data)analysis supported a robust long-term population increase since 1999,recently stabilizing around 150,000 individuals in GWFG and 100,000 in TDBG,*** TGBG stabilized at around 7000 with no significant change of population over *** shorter-term trends within a season suggested that wintering populations of GWFG and TDBG in China might stop over in korea in their autumn migration before their sea-crossing,evidenced by the large congregation near the Yellow Sea coast followed by a gradual *** contrast to autumn,there was no similar peak in spring migration,suggesting the potential for elliptical migration of some populations around the Yellow *** findings indicate a growing East Asian population and imply one of the migration strategies of the Greater White-fronted and Tundra Bean *** collaborating with recent tracking data,long-term monitoring efforts could offer more detailed insights into population trends and migration strategies,thereby contributing to the effective management and conservation of goose species in East Asia.
