Detecting early changes in choroidal vascularity and thickness using optical coherence tomography in patients with corneal crosslinking for keratoconus

AIM:To investigate changes in choroidal thickness and vascularity in keratoconus patients treated with corneal crosslinking.METHODS:This study evaluated 28 eyes of 22 patients with keratoconus who underwent corneal crosslinking.The choroidal thicknesses were evaluated on enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography at the preoperative and postoperative 3d,1,and 3mo.Choroidal thickness in the four cardinal quadrants and the fovea were evaluated.The choroidal vascularity index was also calculated.RESULTS:There was no significant difference in central choroidal thickness between the preoperative and postoperative 3d,1mo(P>0.05).There was a significant increase in the 3mo(P=0.034)and a significant decrease in the horizontal choroidal vascularity index on the postoperative 3d(P=0.014),there was no statistically significant change in vertical axes and other visits in horizontal sections(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:This study sheds light on choroidal changes in postoperative corneal crosslinking for keratoconus.While it suggests the procedure’s relative safety for submacular choroid,more extensive research is necessary to confirm these findings and their clinical significance.

The effect of size on the biaxial flexural strength(BFS)of Portland cement mortar was investigated by using the recently proposed triangular plate method(TPM).An experimental program was conceived to study the size effect by keeping a constant water-cement ratio of 0.485,cement-sand ratio of 1:2.75,and using unreinforced triangular mortar plates of five different thicknesses and seven different side lengths.The BFS of the produced specimens was tested,and variations of BFS depending on specimen thickness and side length were determined.The results indicated that increases in triangular plate specimen side length and specimen thickness led to a decrease in the BFS of Portland cement mortar.The effect of specimen length increase on BFS was more significant than on the effect of the specimen thickness.The variations in specimens’thickness indicated a deterministic Type I size effect,while the variations in specimens’length showed an energetic-statistical Type I size effect.

This study was carried out to evaluate the water quality of selected dam lakes as well as their suitability for agricultural irrigation.Seven dams were selected for water sampling and samples were collected monthly,including during the irrigation season for a period of one year from March to September 2019.The samples were analyzed for temperature,pH,physicochemical parameters such as temperature,pH value,salinity(EC),anions(CO_(3),HCO_(3),CI,SO_(4),P,NO_(3)),cations(Na,K,Ca,Mg,B,NH_(4))and heavy metals.The irrigation suitability assessment was made using various indices such as SAR(sodium adsorption rate),TDS(total dissolved solids),Na%(sodium percentage),RSC(residual sodium bicarbonate),MAR(magnesium adsorption rate),KR(Kelly ratio),and PI(permeability index).The temperature values of the water samples varied between 5.8℃-25.1℃,pH and EC values changed between 7.51 and 8.46,282,and 1400μS/cm respectively.The water samples were evaluated as C_(2)S_(1) and C_(3)S_(1) irrigation water classes.The heavy metal contents of the water samples were determined below the limit values.Selected dams were found suitable for irrigation in terms of EC(salinity),SAR(sodium adsorption rate),TDS(total dissolved solids),Na%(sodium percentage),RSC(residual sodium bicarbonate),MAR(magnesium adsorption rate),and KR(Kelly ratio).Water samples were determined as the second class of PI(permeability index).Güllübağdam was not found suitable as irrigation water in terms of EC,Na%,RSC,and KR values.As a result,it specifically points to the restrictions on the use of water from the Güllübağdam for irrigation purposes.

Carex species are widely used in many parts of the world and contain a large number of ecologically diverse species.Among the Carex species,some of them are known to be glycophytes,while others are halophytes.Carex morrowii Boott(Cyperaceae)is resistant to trample through their root structure and has an essential ornamental value in the landscape with their leaves.However,no information was found about the level of salinity tolerance/sensitivity of the Carex morrowii among these species.In the present study,changes in trace element contents(Na,K,Ca,Cu,Mn,Mg,Ni,Fe,P,Zn,and N)and their transport from roots to leaves,osmotic regulation,alterations in chlorophyll and carotenoid contents,nitrogen assimilation(nitrate reductase activity;NRA)and total soluble protein content in both roots and leaves of Carex morrowii under different salinity concentrations(50 mM,100 mM,200 mM and 300 mM NaCl)were examined in detail.Our study provides the first detailed data concerning the responses of leaves and roots and the determination of the level of salinity tolerance/sensitivity of the Carex morrowii.The K+/Na+ratio was preserved up to 200 mM NaCl,and accordingly,the element uptake and transport ratios showed that they could control moderate NaCl levels.Ca homeostasis that is maintained even in 200 mM NaCl concentration can be effective in maintaining the structural integrity and selective permeability of the cell membranes,while 300 mM NaCl concentration caused decreased photosynthetic pigments,and deterioration in element content and compartmentation.Moreover,these data suggest that plant parts of Carex morrowii respond differently against varied levels of salinity stress.Although the decrease in NR activity at 200 mM and 300 mM NaCl concentrations in the leaves,NR activity was maintained in the roots.Consequently,Carex morrowii is moderately tolerant to salinity and the carotenoid content and osmotic regulation of Carex morrowii appears to be instrumental in its survival at different salinity levels.Especially the roots of Car

The possible impacts on nitrogen-cycle in a p-nitrophenol （PNP） polluted soil and the effectiveness of wastewater sludge amendments in restoring nitrification potential and urease activity were evaluated by an incubation study. The results indicated that PNP at 250 mg/kg soil inhibited urease activity, nitrification potential, arginine ammonification rate and heterotrophic bacteria counts to some extents. After exposure to PNP, the nitrification potential of the tested soil was dramatically reduced to zero over a period of 30 days. Based on the findings, nitrification potential was postulated as a simple biochemical indicator for PNP pollution in soils. Nitrogen-cycling processes in soils responded positively to the applications of wastewater sludges. A sludge application rate of 200 tons/ha was sufficient for successful biostimulation of these nitrogen processes. The microbial activities in sludge-amended, heavy PNP-polluted soils seemed to recover after 30–45 days, indicating the effectiveness of sludge as a useful soil amendment.

Anti-inflammatory efficiency of levobupivacaine in an experimental colitis model

AIM:To investigate the efficiency of levobupivacaine in treating experimentally induced colitis in rats.METHODS:Colitis was induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and ethanol in 30 rats under general anesthesia,and 10 rats were used as a sham group.Subsequent to induction of colitis,rats were divided into three groups;budesonide group received 0.1 mg/kg budesonide,levobupivacaine group received 10 mg/kg levobupivacaine and saline group received 1 mL saline solution via rectal route for 7 d.In the sham group,only routine rectal catheterization was performed without use of any material.At the end of 7 d,laparotomy and total colectomy were performed for histopathological ex-amination in all rats and blood samples were drawn for measurement of tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αand interleukin(IL)-6 following cardiac puncture.Macroscopic and microscopic evaluations of the specimens were performed by a pathologist blinded to group assignment of the rats.RESULTS:Weight loss(P=0.016)and macroscopic examination scores(P=0.001)were significantly higher in saline group than others.Histopathological scoring was comparable between all colitis groups(P=0.350).There was no significant difference in TNF-αlevels and IL-6 levels(P=0.150).CONCLUSION:The significant improvement in macroscopic scores suggests that levobupivacaine may have topical anti-inflammatory effects in an experimental colitis model;however,this finding was not supported by microscopic findings.

Objective To determine the in vitro possible clastogenic and cytotoxic activities of Ulva rigida crude extracts （URE）, and identify their antigenotoxic and protective effects on chemotherapeutic agent mitomycine-C （MMC）. Methods Anti-clastogenic and anti-genotoxic activities of Ulva rigida crude extracts （URE） were studied using chromosome aberration （CA）, sister chromatid exchange （SCE）, and micronuclei （MN） tests in human lymphocytes cultured in vitro. Results The chromosome aberration, sister chromatid exchange or micronuclei tests showed that URE at concentrations of 10, 20, and 40 lag/mL had no clastogenic activity in human lymphocyte cell culture. Three doses of URE significantly decreased the number of chromosomal aberrations and the frequencies of SCE and MN when compared with the culture treated with MMC （P〈0.0001）. Conclusion Although URE itself is not a clastogenic or cytotoxic substance, it possesses strong antigenotoxic, anti-clastogenic, and protective effects on MMC in vitro.
