Applying Machine Learning Approach to Explore Childhood Circumstances and Self-Rated Health in Old Age-China and the us,2020-2021

Introduction:Childhood circumstances impact senior health,prompting the introduction of machine learning methods to assess their individual and collective contributions to senior health.Methods:using health and retirement study(HRS)and China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS),we analyzed 2,434 American and 5,612 Chinese participants aged 60 and above.Conditional inference trees and forests were employed to estimate the influence of childhood circumstances on self-rated health(SRH).Results:The conventional method estimated higher inequality of opportunity(IOP)values in both China(0.039,accounting for 22.67%of the total Gini coefficient 0.172)and the us(0.067,accounting for 35.08%of the total Gini coefficient 0.191).In contrast,the conditional inference tree yielded lower estimates(China:0.022,accounting for 12.79%of 0.172;us:0.044,accounting for 23.04%of 0.191),as did the forest(China:0.035,accounting for 20.35%of 0.172;us:0.054,accounting for 28.27%of 0.191).Childhood health,financial status,and regional differences were key determinants of senior health.The conditional inference forest consistently outperformed others in predictive accuracy,as demonstrated by lower out-of-sample mean squared error(MSE).Discussion:The findings emphasize the need for early-life interventions to promote health equity in aging populations.Machine learning showcases the potential in identifying contributing factors.

The SMILE(Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer)project(http://***/smile/,https://www.***.esa.int/web/smile/mission)is a joint spacecraft mission of the European Space Agency(ESA)and the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)with an expected launch in 2025.SMILE aims to study the global interactions of solar wind–magnetosphere–ionosphere innovatively by imaging the Earth’s magnetosheath and cusps in soft X-rays and the northern auroral region in ultraviolet(UV)while simultaneously measuring plasma and magnetic field parameters in the solar wind and magnetosheath along a highly-elliptical and highly-inclined orbit.This special issue is composed of 22 articles,presenting recent progress in modeling and data analysis techniques developed for the SMILE mission.In this preface,we categorize the articles into the following seven topics and provide brief summaries:(1)instrument descriptions of the Soft X-ray Imager(SXI),(2)numerical modeling of the X-ray signals,(3)data processing of the X-ray images,(4)boundary tracing methods from the simulated images,(5)physical phenomena and a mission concept related to the scientific goals of SMILE-SXI,(6)studies of the aurora,and(7)ground-based support for SMILE.

Machine Learning Analysis of Impact of Western us Fires on Central us Hailstorms

Fires,including wildfires,harm air quality and essential public services like transportation,communication,and utilities.These fires can also influence atmospheric conditions,including temperature and aerosols,potentially affecting severe convective storms.Here,we investigate the remote impacts of fires in the western United States(Wus)on the occurrence of large hail(size:≥2.54 cm)in the central us(Cus)over the 20-year period of 2001–20 using the machine learning(ML),Random Forest(RF),and Extreme Gradient Boosting(XGB)methods.The developed RF and XGB models demonstrate high accuracy(>90%)and F1 scores of up to 0.78 in predicting large hail occurrences when Wus fires and Cus hailstorms coincide,particularly in four states(Wyoming,South Dakota,Nebraska,and Kansas).The key contributing variables identified from both ML models include the meteorological variables in the fire region(temperature and moisture),the westerly wind over the plume transport path,and the fire features(i.e.,the maximum fire power and burned area).The results confirm a linkage between Wus fires and severe weather in the Cus,corroborating the findings of our previous modeling study conducted on case simulations with a detailed physics model.

SciCN:A Scientific Dataset for Chinese Named Entity Recognition

Named entity recognition(NER)is a fundamental task of information extraction(IE),and it has attracted considerable research attention in recent years.The abundant annotated English NER datasets have significantly promoted the NER research in the English field.By contrast,much fewer efforts are made to the Chinese NER research,especially in the scientific domain,due to the scarcity of Chinese NER datasets.To alleviate this problem,we present aChinese scientificNER dataset–SciCN,which contains entity annotations of titles and abstracts derived from 3,500 scientific papers.We manually annotate a total of 62,059 entities,and these entities are classified into six types.Compared to English scientific NER datasets,SciCN has a larger scale and is more diverse,for it not only contains more paper abstracts but these abstracts are derived from more research fields.To investigate the properties of SciCN and provide baselines for future research,we adapt a number of previous state-of-theart Chinese NER models to evaluate SciCN.Experimental results show that SciCN is more challenging than other Chinese NER datasets.In addition,previous studies have proven the effectiveness of using lexicons to enhance Chinese NER models.Motivated by this fact,we provide a scientific domain-specific lexicon.Validation results demonstrate that our lexicon delivers better performance gains than lexicons of other domains.We hope that the SciCN dataset and the lexicon will enable us to benchmark the NER task regarding the Chinese scientific domain and make progress for future research.The dataset and lexicon are available at:https://***/yangjingla/SciCN.git.

Background:Adenosine triphosphatase inhibitory factor 1(IF1)is a key protein involved in energy metabolism.IF1 has been linked to various agerelated diseases,although its relationship with physical activity(PA)remains unclear.Additionally,the apolipoprotein A-I(apoA-I),a PA-modulated lipoprotein,could play a role in this relationship because it shares a binding site with IF1 on the cell-surface ATP synthase.We examined here the associations between chronic PA and plasma IF1 concentrations among older adults,and we investigated whether apoA-I mediated these associations.Methods:In the present work,1096 healthy adults(63.8%females)aged 70 years and over who were involved in the Multidomain Alzheimer Prevention Trial study were included.IF1 plasma concentrations(square root of ng/mL)were measured at the 1-year visit of the Multidomain Alzheimer Prevention Trial,while PA levels(square root of metabolic equivalent task min/week)were assessed using questionnaires administered each year from baseline to the 3-year visit.Multiple linear regressions were performed to investigate the associations between the first-year mean PA levels and IF1 concentrations.Mediation analyses were conducted to examine whether apoA-I mediated these associations.Mixedeffect linear regressions were carried out to investigate whether the 1-year visit IF1 concentrations predicted subsequent changes in PA.Results:Multiple linear regressions indicated that first-year mean PA levels were positively associated with IF1 concentrations(B=0.021;SE=0.010;p=0.043).Mediation analyses revealed that about 37.7%of this relationship was mediated by apoA-I(B_(ab)=0.008;SE=0.004;p=0.023).Longitudinal investigations demonstrated that higher concentrations of IF1 at the 1-year visit predicted a faster decline in PA levels over the subsequent 2 years(time×IF1:B=0.148;SE=0.066;p=0.025).Conclusion:This study demonstrates that regular PA is associated with plasma IF1 concentrations,and it suggests that apoA-I partly mediates this association.Additionally,this study f

Study of factors influencing the occurrence rate of 60 Hz power line radiation in the topside ionosphere: A systematic survey using the CSES satellite

We analyze the topside ionosphere power line radiation（PLR） at 60 Hz over the us using electric field data collected by CSES satellite between January 2019 and December 2022. The study aimed to further investigate the month-to-month variation characteristic of PLR occurrence rate observed by satellite and its several influencing factors, including solar radiation, lightning activity, and try to clarify the influence of electricity consumption. The results show that the solar radiation(solar zenith angle and F10.7) plays a major role in the variation of the PLR occurrence rate, and that there is no direct connection with the number of lightning. For the relationship between PLR occurrence rate and electricity consumption, the low occurrence rate associated with decreased weekend electricity consumption was not observed in the us. However, there is a significant difference in PLR occurrence rate between the East and West Coasts of the us at the same latitude during the same time period, suggesting that the significant difference in PLR occurrence rate is caused by the significant difference in electricity consumption between the two coasts. After excluding the effect of solar radiation on PLR occurrence rate, we concluded that only a significant difference in regional electricity consumption could lead to a corresponding change in PLR occurrence rate detected by the Low-Earth-Orbit satellite. Finally, we also found there is seasonal variation in the diurnal differences of the PLR occurrence rate caused by seasonal variation of the lower ionosphere.

Holevo bound independent of weight matrices for estimating two parameters of a qubit

Holevo bound plays an important role in quantum metrology as it sets the ultimate limit for multi-parameter estimations,which can be asymptotically achieved.Except for some trivial cases,the Holevo bound is implicitly defined and formulated with the help of weight matrices.Here we report the first instance of an intrinsic Holevo bound,namely,without any reference to weight matrices,in a nontrivial case.Specifically,we prove that the Holevo bound for estimating two parameters of a qubit is equivalent to the joint constraint imposed by two quantum Cramér–Rao bounds corresponding to symmetric and right logarithmic derivatives.This weightless form of Holevo bound enables us to determine the precise range of independent entries of the mean-square error matrix,i.e.,two variances and one covariance that quantify the precisions of the estimation,as illustrated by different estimation models.Our result sheds some new light on the relations between the Holevo bound and quantum Cramer–Rao bounds.Possible generalizations are discussed.

Wide-field linear structured illumination microscopy(LSIM)extends resolution beyond the diffraction limit by moving unresolvable high-frequency information into the passband of the microscopy in the form of moiréfringes.However,due to the diffraction limit,the spatial frequency of the structured illumination pattern cannot be larger than the microscopy cutoff frequency,which results in a twofold resolution improvement over wide-field microscopes.This Letter presents a novel approach in point-scanning LSIM,aimed at achieving higher-resolution improvement by combining stimulated emission depletion(STED)with point-scanning structured illumination microscopy(ps SIM)(STED-ps SIM).The according structured illumination pattern whose frequency exceeds the microscopy cutoff frequency is produced by scanning the focus of the sinusoidally modulated excitation beam of STED microscopy.The experimental results showed a 1.58-fold resolution improvement over conventional STED microscopy with the same depletion laser power.
