Thermo-hydro-poro-mechanical responses of a reservoir-induced landslide tracked by high-resolution fiber optic sensing nerves

Thermo-poro-mechanical responses along sliding zone/surface have been extensively ***,it has not been recognized that the potential contribution of other crucial engineering geological interfaces beyond the slip surface to progressive ***,we aim to investigate the subsurface multiphysics of reservoir landslides under two extreme hydrologic conditions(*** and dry),particularly within sliding *** on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating(UWFBG)technology,we employ specialpurpose fiber optic sensing cables that can be implanted into boreholes as“nerves of the Earth”to collect data on soil temperature,water content,pore water pressure,and *** Xinpu landslide in the middle reach of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area in China was selected as a case study to establish a paradigm for in situ thermo-hydro-poro-mechanical *** UWFBG-based sensing cables were vertically buried in a 31 m-deep borehole at the foot of the landslide,with a resolution of 1 m except for the pressure *** reported field measurements covering the period 2021 and 2022 and produced the spatiotemporal profiles throughout the *** show that wet years are more likely to motivate landslide motions than dry *** annual thermally active layer of the landslide has a critical depth of roughly 9 m and might move downward in warmer *** dynamic groundwater table is located at depths of 9e15 m,where the peaked strain undergoes a periodical response of leap and withdrawal to annual hydrometeorological *** interface behaviors may support the interpretation of the contribution of reservoir regulation to slope stability,allowing us to correlate them to local damage events and potential global *** paper also offers a natural framework for interpreting thermo-hydro-poro-mechanical signatures from creeping reservoir bank slopes,which may form the basis for a landslide monitoring and early warning system.

Life under tension: the relevance of force on biological polymers

Optical tweezers have elucidated numerous biological processes, particularly by enabling the precise manipulation and measurement of tension. One question concerns the biological relevance of these experiments and the generalizability of these experiments to wider biological systems. Here, we categorize the applicability of the information garnered from optical tweezers in two distinct categories: the direct relevance of tension in biological systems, and what experiments under tension can tell us about biological systems, while these systems do not reach the same tension as the experiment, still, these artificial experimental systems reveal insights into the operations of biological machines and life processes.

Although many causes of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)may exist,both the original amyloid cascade and tau hypotheses posit that abnormal misfolding and accumulation of amyloid-β(Aβ)and tau protein is the central event causing the ***,that conclusion could be only partly true,and there is conflicting evidence about the role of both proteins in AD,being able to precede and influence one *** researchers argue that these proteins are mere executors rather than primary causes of ***,there have been continuing refinements of both hypotheses,with alternative explanations proposed.Aβand tau proteins may be independently involved in specific neurotoxic pathways;yet there may be other crucial processes going on in early ***,accumulating evidence suggests that Aβand tau act synergistically,rather than additively in disease onset(Jeremic et al.,2021,2023a).

A hybrid nickel/iron-pyromellitic acid electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

The migration of protons during the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)is a key factor that affects the performance of OER *** enhance proton transportation,we designed a catalyst based on nickel/iron-pyromellitic acid(NiFe-PMA)prepared by the electrochemical deposition *** catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 188 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm^(-2),a Tafel slope of 28.2 mV·dec^(-1),and long-term stability for 30 days with a current of 50 mA·cm^(-2).We characterized the NiFe-PMA catalyst using various techniques,including Fourier transform infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy,Raman spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES).Our results showed that NiFe-PMA contains nickel,iron atoms,and both coordinated and uncoordinated carboxylate ***,XPS data confirmed that carboxylate ligands could adjust the outer electronic structure of metal ions,resulting in the high valence state of Ni in *** result of XAS indicated that the nickel atoms present in the catalyst might be easier to maintain a higher chemical *** investigations using kinetic isotope effects(KIEs)and proton inventory revealed that the uncoordinated carboxylic protons played a crucial role in receiving protons during the OER,which promoted the proton transfer of the rate-determining step of the *** novel electrocatalysts provide a new strategy for designing more active and cost-effective catalysts for the OER.

*** The Fankou giant zinc(Zn)-lead(Pb)deposit in Guangdong Province is well-known for its huge reserves of over 10 Mt(million ton)Zn+Pb metals and high ore-grade with Zn+Pb exceeding 15%(Guangdong Fankou Deposit Investigation Group,1980;Zhu XY et al.,2017).After 60 years of exploration and exploitation,the deposit has accumulated millions of tons of *** interesting question is that what components are hosted in these tailings,and whether some key and critical metals such as gallium and germanium are extremely enriched and worth further comprehensive *** motivated us to conduct an integrated set of field investigation,sampling,major-trace element analyses and reserve assessments about the Fankou *** this contribution,we discover that the tailings contain a variety of metal elements such as zinc,lead and gallium with comprehensive utilization *** data can act as a scientific guidance for further exploration and utilization of the Fankou tailings,and aid to enhance the utilization efficiency of the key mineral resource in *** study also provide demonstration for future green mine construction in China.

Biodiversity metrics on ecological networks: Demonstrated with animal gastrointestinal microbiomes

Biodiversity has become a terminology familiar to virtually every citizen in modern *** is said that ecology studies the economy of nature,and economy studies the ecology of humans;then measuring biodiversity should be similar with measuring national ***,there have been many parallels between ecology and economics,actually beyond *** example,arguably the second most widely used biodiversity metric,Simpson(1949)’s diversity index,is a function of familiar Gini-index in *** of the biggest challenges has been the high“diversity”of diversity indexes due to their excessive“speciation”-there are so many indexes,similar to each country’s sovereign currency-leaving confused diversity practitioners in *** 1973,Hill introduced the concept of“numbers equivalent”,which is based on Renyi entropy and originated in economics,but possibly due to his abstruse interpretation of the concept,his message was not widely received by ecologists until nearly four decades *** Hill suggested was similar to link the us dollar to gold at the rate of$35 per ounce under the Bretton Woods *** Hill numbers now are considered most appropriate biodiversity metrics system,unifying Shannon,Simpson and other diversity ***,we approach to another paradigmatic shift-measuring biodiversity on ecological networks-demonstrated with animal gastrointestinal microbiomes representing four major invertebrate classes and all six vertebrate *** network diversity can reveal the diversity of species interactions,which is a necessary step for understanding the spatial and temporal structures and dynamics of biodiversity across environmental gradients.
