Propionibacterium species are mostly environmental bacteria, some being commensal of mammals including humans, and sometimes pathogenic. These bacteria are poorly identified using routine laboratory methods. Recently, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has emerged as a rapid and efficient method to identify bacterial species. We evaluated the use of MALDI-TOF-MS for identification of all validated Propionibacterium species. Only four of the 15 tested reference strains (26.7%) were correctly identified at the species level, and P. acnes, the most common human pathogenic species was not identified. When applying MALDI-TOF-MS to 48 P. acnes strains, only 18.7% were correctly identified, suggesting an intraspecific variability of proteic profiles among Propionibacterium strains. However, by enriching the Bruker database with spectra from five of these strains and re-testing the other 43 strains against this new database, 93.0% were correctly identified. Our study demonstrates that MALDI-TOF-MS may be used for the identification of Propionibacterium isolates but requires a database enrichment in spectra from additional isolates.

Monocytes are effector immune cells but a precise anal-ysis of their role in immune response has been preclud-ed by their heterogeneity. Indeed, human monocytesare composed of at least three different subsets withdifferent phenotypic characteristics and functional prop-erties, the so-called classical, intermediate and non-classical monocytes. A review of the literature showsthat these monocyte subsets are differently affectedduring viral, bacterial, parasitic and fungal *** expansion of the CD16＋ compartment （intermedi-ate and non-classical monocytes） is typically observedin the majority of infectious diseases and the increasedproportion of CD16＋ monocytes is likely related totheir activation through their direct interaction with thepathogen or the infammatory context. In contrast, thenumber of non-classical and intermediate monocytesis decreased in Q fever endocarditis, suggesting thatcomplex mechanisms govern the equilibrium among monocyte subsets. The measurement of monocyte sub-sets would be useful in better understanding of the role of monocyte activation in the pathophysiology of infec-tious diseases.

Malaria is one of the leading causes of consultation in African pediatric hospitals. In Gabon, malaria transmission is perennial. Plasmodium falciparum, responsible for the most severe form of the disease, represents more than 95% of all species. In P. falciparum infection, the hyperparasitemia accounts among the main criteria of disease severity. However, in many endemic countries, a significant decrease of malaria burden accompanying with the diminution of parasite load in infected individuals has been demonstrated. The objective of the study was to analyze the occurrence of febrile syndrome in childhood and investigate whether the acute febrile illness could be associated with P. falciparum submicroscopic infection. A cross-sectional study was carried out during January to March 2013 in Franceville. A total of 203 acute febrile children were enrolled. A clinical examination and biomedical analysis including parasitological diagnosis by microscope were carried out in all the patients and PCR on microscope negative ones. Of 203 children recruited for febrile syndrome, 111 have been diagnosed positive for P. falciparum infection, 73 （35.9%） by microscope （ME） and 38 （18.71%） by PCR （submicroscopic infection = SM1） with an overall prevalence of 54.68%. Of the 11 1 P. falciparum infected individuals and according to the WHO criteria, 35 （31.53%） children showed a clinical picture of severe malaria against 76 （68.47%） others classified as uncomplicated malaria. The overall prevalence rates were therefore estimated as 17.24 （35/203） for severe cases and 37.43% （76/203） for uncomplicated ones. Clinically, these severe malaria cases （27 ME＋ and 8 PCR＋） were mainly composed of 85.71% of anaemic patients （30/35）, 71.14% of prostrated individuals （25/35） and 57.14% of children with clinical icterus （20/35）. 目的:了解法国新喀里多尼亚地区蜱中贝氏考克次体的流行状况。方法:以贝氏考克次体的16SrRNA为靶基因,病原体的RNA自蜱中提取,使用荧光定量PCR技术,检测法国新喀里多尼亚地区三种蜱共456株中贝氏考克次体的流行率。结果:以30为CT值,共检测出阳性334株,阳性率73.2%。按蜱种分类:硬蜱虫2株皆为阴性;血红扇头蜱阳性163株,阳性率69.9%;边缘革蜱阳性171株,阳性率77.4%。结论:法国蜱中贝氏考克次体的流行率很高,不同种蜱阳性率不同。
