Building a resilient future: collaborative sustainability regulation

The challenge of sustainability lies in achieving a balance between satisfying present needs and protecting resources for future generations with an emphasis on its three pillars-environmental, social and governance. This study explored sustainable development encompassing environmental, social and governance aspects along with sustainability reporting through various sustainability frameworks. A systematic review of literature for the period 2010-23 on major worldwide sustainability frameworks was conducted, by offering insights into enhancing reporting mechanisms for a sustainable future. Secondary data related to sustainability reports were obtained from the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and International Integrated Reporting Council, which helped in examining sector and year variations across countries. The results reflected that mandatory sustainability disclosures help to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and global sustainability frameworks help to set standards, disseminate information and promote transparency. Collaboration of investment, company action and sustainability organizations can lead to a sustainable global economy. The adoption of sustainability reporting can help organizations by fostering a proper understanding of sustainability practices, improving transparency and identifying potential business opportunities in sectors with lower sustainability. The paper provided insights into sustainability reporting published across various countries in both advanced as well as emerging and developing economies. The analysis showed which sectors and time periods have had the most sustainability reports and which areas needed to be targeted for action to advance sustainable development. A reduced model for particle calcination for use in DEM/CFD simulations

We treat the accurate simulation of the calcination reaction in particles, where the particles are large and, thus, the inner-particle processes must be resolved. Because these processes need to be described with coupled partial differential equations (PDEs) that must be solved numerically, the computation times for a single particle are too high for use in simulations that involve many particles. Simulations of this type arise when the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is combined with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to investigate industrial systems such as quicklime production in lime shaft kilns. We show that, based on proper orthogonal decomposition and Galerkin projection, reduced models can be derived for single particles that provide the same spatial and temporal resolution as the original PDE models at a considerably reduced computational cost. Replacing the finite volume particle models with the reduced models results in an overall reduction of the reactor simulation time by about 40% for the sample system treated here. Research of simulation and experiment on arc characteristics of gas mechanical switch

An arc is the high-temperature discharge plasma produced in the opening process of mechanical switches, which directly affects the breaking capability of a hybrid DC circuit breaker. According to the physical mechanism of an electric arc, the construction of an arc model for simulation analysis is an important technical means in the electrical field. In this study, based on the theory of magneto hydrodynamics (MHD), a gas mechanical switch model of a natural commutation DC circuit breaker with a compound gap is established. The arc motion process under different conditions is simulated and calculated. The influence of different initial pressures, different opening speeds, and different striking currents on the arc voltage characteristics is analysed. The results show that the larger the gas pressure, the smaller the arc volume and the higher the arc voltage. The faster the opening speed, the longer the arc and the higher the arc voltage; with the increase of the current, the arc voltage increases rapidly at a low current, while the arc voltage increases slowly at a high current.

Prism blockchain enabled Internet of Things with deep reinforcement learning

This paper presents a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled Prism blockchain. The recent advancements in the field of IoT motivate the development of a secure infrastructure for storing and sharing vast amounts of data. Blockchain, a distributed and immutable ledger, is best known as a potential solution to data security and privacy for the IoT. The scalability of blockchain, which should optimize the throughput and handle the dynamics of the IoT environment, becomes a challenge due to the enormous amount of IoT data. The critical challenge in scaling blockchain is to guarantee decentralization, latency, and security of the system while optimizing the transaction throughput. This paper presents a DRL-based performance optimization for blockchain-enabled IoT. We consider one of the recent promising blockchains, Prism, as the underlying blockchain system because of its good performance guarantees. We integrate the IoT data into Prism blockchain and optimize the performance of the system by leveraging the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) method. The DRL method helps to optimize the blockchain parameters like mining rate and mined blocks to adapt to the environment dynamics of the IoT system. Our results show that the proposed method can improve the throughput of Prism blockchain-based IoT systems while preserving Prism performance guarantees. Our scheme can achieve 1.5 times more system rewards than IoT-integrated Prism. In our experimental setup, the proposed scheme could improve the average throughput of the system by about 6,000 transactions per second compared to Prism.

Enhancing rock fragmentation prediction in mining operations: A Hybrid GWO-RF model with SHAP interpretability

In the mining industry, precise forecasting of rock fragmentation is critical for optimising blasting processes. In this study, we address the challenge of enhancing rock fragmentation assessment by developing a novel hybrid predictive model named GWO-RF. This model combines the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm with the Random Forest (RF) technique to predict the D80 value, a critical parameter in evaluating rock fragmentation quality. The study is conducted using a dataset from Sarcheshmeh copper mine, employing six different swarm sizes for the GWO-RF hybrid model construction. The GWO-RF model's hyperparameters are systematically optimized within established bounds, and its performance is rigorously evaluated using multiple evaluation metrics. The results show that the GWO-RF hybrid model has higher predictive skills, exceeding traditional models in terms of accuracy. Furthermore, the interpretability of the GWO-RF model is enhanced through the utilization of SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values. The insights gained from this research contribute to optimizing blasting operations and rock fragmentation outcomes in the mining industry.

Assessment of energy consumption, environmental effects and fuel costs of the bus rapid transit system in Bogota (Colombia)

Colombia aims to boost the utilization of mass transportation systems in its major cities while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, in alignment with the commitments of the COP21 agreement. In 2020, the transport sector in Colombia accounted for 34.4% of the country's energy demand and was responsible for similar to 49% of its total CO2 emissions. This article presents an assessment of energy consumption, environmental effects and the fuel costs of Bogota's bus rapid transit system based on the Activity, Share, Intensity, Fuel methodology. A long-term analysis spanning from 2021 to 2040 was developed using the long-range energy alternatives planning platform. To conduct this assessment, the tool was calibrated using data from 2019 and 2020. Four distinct scenarios based on energy policies implemented in Bogota were examined: Business as Usual, Fast Transition, High Growth and Low Growth. Regarding energy consumption and environmental effects, the results underscore the pivotal role of diversifying energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels such as oil. Consequently, the analysis emphasizes the urgent need to accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources such as natural gas and electricity. [GRAPHICS] .

Experimental validation of double-fed induction generator in oscillating water column using circulatory system-based optimization

This paper validates the optimal operation for a grid-connected double-fed induction generator (DFIG) in an oscillating water column power plant (OWCPP). This study presents a novel optimization technique called the circulatory system-based optimization (CSBO) approach to develop six adaptive fuzzy logic controllers (AFLCs) with 30 parameters and compare them to chaotic-billiards optimization (C-BO) and genetic algorithm (GA). The proposed controller is also compared with a proportional-integral differential (PID) controller based on a self-adaptive global-best harmony search (SGHS). CSBO-based AFLCs are fully investigated under different scenarios and experimented with using a real-time interface DSP1104. The results of using CSBO-AFLCs revealed a fast time response, fast convergence, less overshoot and minimal error compared with those achieved with C-BO-AFLC, SGHS-PID and GA-AFLC during different case studies. The CSBO-based AFLCs ensure maximum power from the DFIG in an OWCPP and enhance dynamic response with very low errors. The results show that the CSBO shows better power tracking by 25% as compared with C-BO, by 45% when compared with the GA and by 56% when compared with PID. Moreover, the integral absolute errors of six controllers are investigated to demonstrate the feasibility of CSBO-AFLC. The root mean square of the errors of six controllers using CSBO is improved by 68.27% when compared with GA, by 22.57% when compared with C-BO and by 38.42% when compared with PID. These indicators demonstrate the feasibility of CSBO when compared with other algorithms with the same OWCPP. This paper validates the optimal operation of a grid-connected double-fed induction generator in an oscillating water column using a novel optimization technique called the circulatory system-based optimization approach. Experiments using a real-time simulator demonstrate the feasibility of the approach when compared with other algorithms. Graphical Abstract

A review of torsional vibration mitigation techniques using active control and machine learning strategies

Drilling is one of the most challenging and expensive processes in hydrocarbon extraction and geothermal well development. Dysfunctions faced during drilling can increase the non-productive time (NPT) greatly, resulting in inflating the drilling cost and also pose a safety concern. One of the main problems faced during drilling that limits the life of drilling equipment and tools and decreases the overall productivity of the system is drilling vibrations. These vibrations can be categorized into three modes: axial, lateral, and torsional. Stick-slip vibrations are a type of torsional vibration in which the bottom hole assembly (BHA) periodically stops to rotate followed by a spike in the bottom hole RPM. This paper provides a comprehensive review of techniques used to control and mitigate torsional vibration with an emphasis on stick-slip. A brief introduction to drillstring and friction modeling is presented followed by a concise summary of passive control techniques to control stick-slip. Then the focus is shifted to an up-to-date review of active control and machine learning for stick-slip control and mitigation. The paper ultimately highlights the importance of adapting novel control and mitigation concepts to improve stick slip detection and improve the overall drilling process. A unique solution is insufficient to control a complex process such as drilling, but integration of various techniques has been found promising. (c) 2023 Southwest Petroleum university. Biodiesel production from waste cooking oil using calcium oxide derived from scallop shell waste

Biodiesel is one of the alternative forms of diesel fuel and can be obtained using the transesterification process of waste cooking oil with a catalyst to accelerate the reaction. The heterogeneous catalyst from waste scallop shells is used due to its potential for being reused in the subsequent transesterification reactions. Heterogeneous catalysts can also be recycled, contributing to their environmentally friendly nature. This study aims to identify the performance of recycling a calcium oxide (CaO) catalyst from scallop shell waste on synthesis biodiesel. The method used is the transesterification method with the basic ingredients of waste cooking oil using a CaO catalyst. Then, after the transesterification process is complete, the catalyst is separated from the biodiesel and recycled to be reused in the transesterification process up to five times. The biodiesel samples obtained are identified for yield value, physico-chemical properties, thermal properties and performance. X-ray diffraction characterization results for the CaO catalyst show that it has a crystal size of 67.83 nm. Scanning electron microscope characterization shows that it has spherical particle shapes. Fourier transform infrared characterization shows the presence of Ca-O bonds. The highest biodiesel yield value of 74.23% is obtained in biodiesel Cycle 1. The flash point value of biodiesel samples ranges from 141.2 degrees C to 149 degrees C. Further, all of the biodiesel samples exhibit a cetane number of 75. The highest lower heating value of 38.22 MJ/kg is obtained in biodiesel Cycle 1 and the viscosity of the biodiesel samples ranges from 5.65 to 5.88 cSt. The density of the biodiesel samples ranges from 881.23 to 882.92 kg/m3. Besides, ester functional groups (C=O) and methyl functional groups have been successfully formed in all samples, with the methyl oleate compound observed as dominating the biodiesel samples. Modelling and mechanical characteristics of PDC cutter-rock interaction by combining mixed fragmentation modes with dynamic rock strength

Polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit is one of the most widely used drill bits for improving the rate of penetration in deep oil and gas well and geothermal well. However, the dynamic rock fragmentation mechanics characteristics of PDC bits are still unclearly. A coupled fragmentation mechanics model of PDC cutter-rock interaction is established by combining the mixed fragmentation modes with dynamic strength. The coupling influence laws of cutter angle, cutting depth, dynamic strength ratio, breaking modes on the horizontal force coefficient (HFC), vertical force coefficient (VFC) and specific energy are analyzed. The model of this paper can optimize cutter inclination angle, cutting depth and minimum specific energy. With the increase of the cutter inclination angle, the dynamic VFC changes into two modes. The definition of the dynamic modes depends on the dynamic strength ratio. As the cutting angle increases, the cutting force increases. The cutting force increases nonlinearly with increasing cutting depth. The specific energy of rock fragmentation increases nonlinearly with increasing cutting depth. With the increase of dynamic strength, the specific energy of rock fragmentation increases nonlinearly. When the input-energy increases, the rate of penetration response is divided into three stages. The results have important guiding significance for the PDC bit design and drilling parameters optimization to increase the rate of penetration and the efficiency of exploration and development.
