Ultrastable MOF-based foams for versatile applications

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)are attractive for promising applications but plagued by difficult recovery and deployment due to their intrinsic nano/micro powder *** significant efforts have been made to develop separable solid matrixes for MOF supporting,the poor loading stability and durability of MOFs still challenge their engineering ***,we present a facile and effective approach to fabricate MOF-based melamine foams(MFs)(denoted as MOFiths)with ultrahigh loading stability and operation stability,easy separation,and high-efficient performance for versatile robust *** adopting our approach,numbers of typical fragile MOFs characterized with wide ranges of particle size(from~nm to~μm)can be precisely incorporated into MFs with controllable loading ratios(up to~1,600%).Particularly,the produced MOFiths show excellent capacities for the highly effective and durable water purifications and acetalization reactions.100%of organic pollutants can be rapidly destructed within 10 min by MOFiths initiated Fenton or catalytic ozonation processes under five successive cycles while the maximum adsorption capacity of MOFiths toward Pb(II),Cd(II),and Cu(II)reaches to 422,222,and 105 mg·g^(-1),*** study provides a critical solution to substantially facilitate the engineering applications of MOFs for long-term use in practice.

Multi-objective optimization of building design for life cycle cost and C0_(2) emissions:A case study of a low-energy residential building in a severe cold climate

Currently,building construction and operation are responsible for 36%of global final energy usage and nearly 40%of energy-related carbon dioxide(CO_(2))*** the sustainable development perspective,it is crucial to consider the impact of construction material on the achievement of life cycle *** study proposed a simulation-based multi-objective optimization method to minimize both life cycle cost and CO_(2) emissions of *** built an energy simulation model with hybrid ventilation and light-dimming control in EnergyPlus based on an operational passive residential building in a severe cold ***,this investigation selected insulation thickness,window type,window-to-wall ratio,overhang depth and building orientation as design *** study ran parametric simulations to establish a database and then used artificial neural network models to correlate the design variables and the objective ***,we used the multi-objective optimization algorithm NSGA-Ⅱ to search for the optimal design *** results showed potential reductions of 10.9%-18.9%in life cycle cost and 13.5%-22.4%in life cycle CO_(2) emissions compared with the initial *** results indicated that the optimization approach in this study would improve building *** optimal values of the design variables obtained in this study can guide designers in meeting economic and environmental targets in passive buildings.

Qilianyu Islands coral reefs(QICR),located in the northeastern part of the South China Sea,has been affected by human activities and natural *** characterize the trophic structure,ecosystem properties and keystone species of this region,a food-web model for the QICR is developed using methods involving a mass-balance approach with Ecopath with Ecosim *** levels range from 1.00 for detritus and primary producers to 3.80 for *** mean trophic transfer efficiency for the entire ecosystem is 13.15%,with 55%of total energy flow originating from primary producers.A mixed trophic impact analysis indicates that coral strongly impacts most components of this ecosystem.A comparison of our QICR model with that for other coral reef ecosystems suggests that the QICR ecosystem is immature and/or is degraded.

Prioritizing sustainable development goals and linking them to ecosystem services:A global expert’s knowledge evaluation

The implementation of strategies to achieve the sustainable development Goals(SDGs)is frequently hindered by potential trade-offs between priorities for either environmental protection or human ***,ecosystem services(ES)-based solutions can offer possible co-benefits for SDGs implementation that are often overlooked or *** this study,we cover this gap and investigate how experts from different countries value the SDGs and relate them with ES.A total of 66 countries participated to the survey,and answers were grouped into three macro-regions:Asia;Europe,North America,and Oceania(ENO);Latin America,Caribbean and Africa(LA).Results show that the most prioritized SDGs in the three macro-regions are usually those related to essential material needs and environmental conditions,such as SDG2(Zero Hunger),SDG1(No Poverty),and SDG6(Clean Water).At a global scale,the number of prioritized synergies between SDGs and ES largely exceeded *** highest amount of synergies was observed for SDG1(No Poverty),mainly with SDG2,SDG3(Good Health),SDG5(Gender Equality),and SDG8(Economic Growth).Other major synergies among SDGs include SDG14-15(Life below water-Life on land),SDG5-10(Gender Equity-Reduced Inequality),and SDG1-2(No poverty-Zero Hunger).At a global scale,SDG15,SDG13,SDG14,and SDG6 were closely related to ES like climate regulation,freshwater,food,water purification,biodiversity,and ***11(sustainable Cities)and SDG3 were also relevant in Asia and in LA,***,this study shows the potential to couple future policies that can implement SDGs’strategies while adopting ES-based solutions in different regions of the world.

Image semantic segmentation is an essential technique for studying human behavior through image *** paper proposes an image semantic segmentation method for human behavior ***,an end-to-end convolutional neural network architecture is proposed,which consists of a depth-separable jump-connected fully convolutional network and a conditional random field network;then jump-connected convolution is used to classify each pixel in the image,and an image semantic segmentation method based on convolu-tional neural network is proposed;and then a conditional random field network is used to improve the effect of image segmentation of hu-man behavior and a linear modeling and nonlinear modeling method based on the semantic segmentation of conditional random field im-age is ***,using the proposed image segmentation network,the input entrepreneurial image data is semantically segmented to obtain the contour features of the person;and the segmentation of the images in the medical *** experimental results show that the image semantic segmentation method is *** is a new way to use image data to study human behavior and can be extended to other research areas.

Livelihood transformation from fishing to tourism: an adaptive sustainable livelihood framework for understanding lakeside communities of China

Fisheries in coastal and lakeside regions are increasingly facing sustainability challenges. This predicament has compelled these regions to shift toward economic diversification, with tourism emerging as a feasible alternative economic activity. This study focuses on a rural community adjacent to Erhai Lake in Dali City, Yunnan Province, China, examining its shift from a fishing-based economy to tourism over several decades. Employing an adaptive sustainable livelihood framework, this study assessed the livelihood transformation across various stages over an extended period, from both institutional and action-oriented perspectives, analyzing factors influencing sustainable livelihood transformation in lakeside communities and their subsequent effects. This research revealed several key insights. Firstly, tourism, as an alternative industry to fishing, not only faces increasingly stringent environmental protection policies but also confronts multiple challenges from the community level. Secondly, the improvement of the physical assets of locals within the tourism development, which can increase property-based income, has the potential to facilitate a sustainable transformation of their livelihoods. Thirdly, analysis identifies the pivotal role of human capital in the current transition process, with the influence of talent and innovative livelihood industry management models gaining prominence to ensure sustainability of this transformation. © The Author(s) 2024. The Evaluation Method of Gully Village’s Ecological sustainable development in the Gully Regions of Loess Plateau

The gully region of Loess Plateau is one of the earliest human settlement areas and the most ecologically sensitive areas in China. It has been facing challenges for future development. Gully village is the smallest social units on Loess Plateau that owns large amount of agricultural population. However, due to inappropriate development planning and lack of developing directions, they are gradually disappearing. Based on the practical investigations of the Gully Regions of Loess Plateau, this paper aims to explore a new way for the future development of gully villages. Firstly, it classifies the gully villages by the distribution of location. Secondly, selecting ecological construction evaluation factors of gully village and completing the quantitative evaluation are applied on the suitability and sensitivity of ecological sustainable development classification. Thirdly, according to the comprehensive evaluation, the developing condition of each gully village is divided into “Good”, “General” and “Poor”. Finally, this paper figures out the future developing direction for gully villages in different developing conditions.

Passive Remediation of Acid Mine Drainage Using Ball-Milling Modified Indonesian Natural Bentonite: Laboratory Batch and Column Sorption of Manganese

Manganese (Mn) is an essential element for human body. However, elevated concentration of manganese causes severe problem and disease. Acid mine drainage (AMD), wastewater generated due to open-pit mining, commonly contains Mn with exceeded concentration. This study is to investigate the improvement of ball-milling modified Indonesian natural bentonite (INB) for manganese (Mn) removal from AMD and to increase the pH through batch and column sorption test as a passive treatment system approach. The batch sorption test result showed the maximum Mn adsorbed (Qm) on INB from the Langmuir model increased from 4.69 to 17.12 mg/g after milling. The column sorption test result also showed the amount of Mn adsorbed on INB until breakthrough time (qu) and until saturation time (q) increased after milling. The qu increased from 1.27 to 10.06 mg/g, and the q increased from 4.55 to 12.91 mg/g. The mass transfer zone (MTZ) became significantly shorter after milling from 0.22 to 0.07 cm. The Thomas model exhibited the equilibrium uptake of Mn (q0) increased after milling from 3.91 to 13.72 mg/g. In equilibrium condition, both unmilled and milled INB showed the pH increased from ≈3 to 8.
