Topology reduction through machine learning to accelerate dynamic simulation of district heating

District heating networks (DHNs) provide an efficient heat distribution solution in urban areas, accomplished through interconnected and insulated pipes linking local heat sources to local consumers. This efficiency is further enhanced by the capacity of these networks to integrate renewable heat sources and thermal storage systems. However, integration of these systems adds complexity to the physical dynamics of the network, necessitating complex dynamic simulation models. These dynamic physical simulations are computationally expensive, limiting their adoption, particularly in large-scale networks. To address this challenge, we propose a methodology utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to reduce the computational time associated with the DHNs dynamic simulations. Our approach consists in replacing predefined clusters of substations within the DHNs with trained surrogate ANNs models, effectively transforming these clusters into single nodes. This creates a hybrid simulation framework combining the predictions of the ANNs models with the accurate physical simulations of remaining substation nodes and pipes. We evaluate different architectures of Artificial Neural Network on diverse clusters from four synthetic DHNs with realistic heating demands. Results demonstrate that ANNs effectively learn cluster dynamics irrespective of topology or heating demand levels. Through our experiments, we achieved a 27% reduction in simulation time by replacing 39% of consumer nodes while maintaining acceptable accuracy in preserving the generated heat powers by sources.

Background The invasion success of introduced freshwater fishes is influenced by many factors, including ecological, species, and socioeconomic characteristics. Most studies that document the importance of these characteristics are conducted at local scales and/or focus on a single step of the invasion process. In this study, we aim to determine the species characteristics, ecological characteristics, and socioeconomic characteristics of non-native freshwater fish invasions. Our assessment was done at the global scale and considers all three steps of the invasion(i.e., introduction, establishment, and impact). For this purpose, we applied generalized linear models to 20 variables collected for 307 non-native species and modeled them as a function of ecological characteristics(i.e., environmental features), species traits(i.e., functional and morphological), and socioeconomic characteristics(i.e., human use and introduction pathways). We considered the number of countries in which each species was introduced, established, or had ecological impacts as a proxy of invasion step success. We also explored the specifics of species introduced through the aquaculture and the ornamental fish trade *** We found that non-native freshwater fishes with broad diets, high parental care, and multiple introduction pathways are the most widely introduced and established worldwide. The number of countries with impacts reported was best explained by the type of introduction pathway(i.e., aquaculture or fisheries). Moreover, among non-native species introduced through aquaculture, those belonging to Cypriniformes and having broad diets were the most widely introduced and established species. Lithium-ion battery State of Health(SOH)estimation is an essential issue in battery management *** order to better estimate battery SOH,Extreme Learning Machine(ELM)is used to establish a model to estimate lithium-ion battery *** Swarm Optimization algorithm(PSO)is used to automatically adjust and optimize the parameters of ELM to improve estimation ***,collect cyclic aging data of the battery and extract five characteristic quantities related to battery capacity from the battery charging curve and increment capacity *** Grey Relation Analysis(GRA)method to analyze the correlation between battery capacity and five characteristic ***,an ELM is used to build the capacity estimation model of the lithium-ion battery based on five characteristics,and a PSO is introduced to optimize the parameters of the capacity estimation *** proposed method is validated by the degradation experiment of the lithium-ion battery under different *** results show that the battery capacity estimation model based on ELM and PSO has better accuracy and stability in capacity estimation,and the average absolute percentage error is less than 1%.

Numerous analytical models have been developed to predict ground deformations induced by tunneling,which is a critical issue in tunnel ***,the accuracy of these predictions is often limited by errors and uncertainties resulting from model selection and parameter fittings,given the paucity of monitoring data in field *** paper proposes a novel approach to estimate tunnelling-induced ground deformations by applying Bayesian model averaging to several representative prediction *** accounting for both model and parameter uncertainties,this approach enables more realistic predictions of ground deformations than individual ***,our results indicate that the Gonzalez-Sagaseta model outperforms other models in predicting ground surface settlements,while the Loganathan-Poulos model is most suitable for predicting subsurface vertical and horizontal ***,our analysis reveals that when monitoring data are sparse,model uncertainties may contribute up to 78.7%of the total ***,obtaining sufficient data for parameter fitting is crucial for accurate *** proposed method in this study offers a more realistic and efficient prediction of tunnelling-induced ground deformations.

This study aims to predict the migration time of toxic fumes induced by excavation blasting in underground *** reduce numerical simulation time and optimize ventilation design,several back propagation neural network(BPNN)models optimized by honey badger algorithm(HBA)with four chaos mapping(CM)functions(i.e.,Chebyshev(Che)map,Circle(Cir)map,Logistic(Log)map,and Piecewise(Pie)map)are developed to predict the migration time.125 simulations by the computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method are used to train and test the developed *** determination coefficient(R2),the variance accounted for(VAF),the Willmott’s index(WI),the root mean square error(RMSE),the mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),and the sum of squares error(SSE)are utilized to evaluate the model *** evaluation results indicate that the CirHBA-BPNN model has achieved the most satisfactory performance by reaching the highest values of R2(0.9945),WI(0.9986),VAF(99.4811%),and the lowest values of RMSE(15.7600),MAPE(0.0343)and SSE(6209.4),*** wind velocity in roadway(Wv)is the most important feature for predicting the migration time of toxic ***,the intrinsic response characteristic of the optimal model is implemented to enhance the model interpretability and provide reference for the relationship between features and migration time of toxic fumes in ventilation design.
