The properties of goat meat gels without and with 120 mmol/kg CaCl_(2)as influenced by setting time(30-120 min)at 60℃ were studied.A gel set for 60 min with subsequent cooking for 20 min in the presence of CaCl_(2)had the highest breaking force and deformation with coincidentally lowest expressible moisture content(P0.05).A decrease in the myosin heavy-chain band intensity was noticeable when CaCl_(2)was incorporated,suggesting increased protein *** setting time increased,the L*values increased with varying a*values,whereas no differences in b*values of gels were found,regardless of CaCl_(2)addition(P>0.05).The gel containing CaCl_(2)with setting time of 60 min had the highest hardness,cohesiveness,gumminess,and chewiness(P<0.05)and showed the compact network with high interconnection between *** meat balls prepared under aforementioned conditions had higher texture and overall likeness scores,compared with the control(P<0.05).Therefore,prior setting at 60℃ for 60 min in the presence of CaCl_(2)is recommended for the manufacture of goat meat balls with improved quality.

Bacterial populations coexisting in the phyllosphere niche have important effects on plant health. Quorum sensing （QS） allows bacteria to communicate via diffusible signal molecules, but QS-dependent behaviors in phyllosphere bacterial populations are poorly understood. We investigate the dense and diverse N-acyl-homoserine lactone （AHL）-producing phyllosphere bacteria living on tobacco leaf surfaces via a culture-dependent method and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results indicated that approximately 7.9%-11.7% of the culturable leaf-associated bacteria have the ability to produce AHL based on the assays using whole-cell biosensors. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene assigned the AHL-producing strains to two phylogenetic groups, with Gammaproteobacteria （93%） as the predominant group, followed by Alphaproteobacteria. All of the AHL-producing Alphaproteobacteria were affiliated with the genus Rhizobium, whereas the AHL-producing bacteria belonging to the Gammaproteobacteria mainly fell within the genera Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Pantoea and Serratia. The bioassays of supernatant extracts revealed that a portion of the strains have a remarkable AHL profile for AHL induction activity using the two different biosensors, and one compound in the active extract of a representative isolate, NTL223, corresponded to 3-oxo-hexanoyl-homoserine lactone. A large population size and diversity of bacteria capable of AHL-driven QS were found to cohabit on leaves, implying that cross-communication based AHL-type QS may be common in the phyllosphere. Furthermore, this study provides a general snapshot of a potential valuable application of AHL-producing bacteria inhabiting leaves for their presumable ecological roles in the phyllosphere.

Ovine bones are the major by-products after slaughtered. The present study was conducted to extract and characterize acid soluble collagens （ASC） and pepsin soluble collagens （PSC） from ovine bones （Ujumuqin sheep）. Ovine bones collagen were identified by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis （SDS-PAGE） and liquid chromatography-tan- dem mass spectrometry （LC-MS/MS） as type I collagen. The results of Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） spectra analysis testified the existence of triple superhelical structure in both ASC and PSC, showing pepsin did not disrupt the triple helical structure of ovine bones collagen. Glycine, accounting for one-third of total amino acids, was the major amino acid for ovine bones collagen. Higher imino acid content was responsible for higher thermal denaturation temperature of ovine bones collagen compared to fish collagens. The isoelectric point of ASC was lower than PSC due to the higher content of acidic amino acids. Therefore, this study provides the potential reference for collagen extraction and application of ovine bones by-procduct.

A simple, effective and reliable synthetic method was developed to construct beta-agonist phenylethano- lamine A（PEAA） in good yield with 4-nitrobenzyl bromide as the starting material, which underwent SN2 reaction with ethyl acetoacetate, followed by hydrolysis with concentrated HC1 and amination by Lettkart reaction to furnish 4-（4-nitrophenyl）butan-2-amine（A）. A one-pot reaction was studied to construct PEAA skeleton and reduced carbonyl with KBH4, the conditions were optimized, including reaction temperature, reaction time, solvent and the molar ratio of 2-bromo-l-（4-methoxyphenyl）ethanone（B） to A. Meanwhile, a reliable and practical high performance liquid chromography（HPLC） method with UV detector was developed after screening wavelength, chromatographic column and optimization of mobile phase. The optimal conditions of detecting PEAA were water（0.1% formic acid and 0.1% triethylamine）-methanol（volume ratio 44：56） at 278 nm with plus-C^8 column. The above synthetic method would be used to synthesize standard reference materials and advance extensive application of analytical method. In order to ensure food safety and safeguard human health, the analytical method might be used as a standard method in detection and supervision of PEAA.

Effects of Organic Matter-Rich Amendments on Selenium Mobility in Soils

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in the Se dynamics in soil. The potential effects of vermicompost and digestate as important sources of SOM on selenium (Se) mobility were assessed in this study. Three soils differing in their physicochemical parameters, fluvisol, chernozem, and luvisol, were chosen, and three types of vermicomposts based on various bio-waste materials as digestate (vermicompost 1), kitchen waste with woodchips (vermicompost 2), and garden bio-waste (vermicompost 3) were used due to their high organic matter content. Additionally, digestate samples alone were applied. To evaluate the potential effect of vermicompost application on sorption characteristics of soils, batch sorption experiments were performed. The results showed a predominant effect on Se species in the soils, where selenite sorbed more intensively compared to selenate, regardless of the soil and ameliorative material applied. In the control, the soil sorption ability of selenite tended to decrease in the order: fluvisol > luvisol > chernozem. However, these differences were not significant. Moreover, the effects of the ameliorative materials depended on both soil and amendment used. In fluvisol, all the amendment applications resulted in a decrease in distribution coefficient ( K d values) of Se, whereas in chernozem, this effect was observed only for the digestate-based vermicompost 1. Increasing K d levels were reported in luvisol treated with digestate;the application of garden bio-waste-based vermicompost 3 tended to decrease the K d values. Further studies are required on long-term effects of these amendments on Se mobility in soils and the role of individual organic matter fractions in this context.

AIM: To investigate the effects of proteins purified from sweet potato storage roots on human colorectal cancer cell lines. METHODS: 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, Hoechst 33258 nuclear staining and Boyden transwell chamber methods were used to determine whether purified sweet potato protein (SPP) from fresh sweet potato roots affected proliferation, migration and invasion, respectively, of human colorectal cancer SW480 cells in vitro . The inhibitory effects of SPP on growth of human colorectal cancer HCT-8 cells intraperitoneally xenografted in nude mice and spontaneous lung metastasis of murine Lewis lung carcinoma 3LL cells subcutaneously transplanted in C57 BL/6 mice were also investigated in vivo . RESULTS: SPP inhibited the proliferation of SW480 cells in a dose-dependent manner, with an IC 50 value of 38.732 μmol/L (r2 = 0.980, P = 0.003) in the MTT assay. Hoechst 33258 nuclear staining further revealed inhibition of cell viability and induction of apoptosis by SPP. The transwell assay disclosed significant reduction in migrated cells/field by 8 μmol/L SPP (8.4 ± 2.6 vs 23.3 ± 5.4, P = 0.031) and invaded cells/field through the ECMatrix by 0.8 μmol/L SPP, compared with the control (25.2 ± 5.2 vs 34.8 ± 6.1, P = 0.038). Both intraperitoneal (ip) and intragastric (ig) administration of SPP led to significant suppression of growth of intraperitoneally inoculated HCT-8 cells in nude mice to 58.0% ± 5.9% (P = 0.037) and 43.5% ± 7.1% (P = 0.004) of the controls, respectively, after 9 d treatment. Bloody ascites additionally disappeared after ip injection of trypsin inhibitor. Notably, ig and ip administration of SPP induced a significant decrease in spontaneous pulmonary metastatic nodule formation in C57 BL/6 mice (21.0 ± 12.3 and 27.3 ± 12.7 nodules/lung vs 42.5 ± 4.5 nodules/lung in controls, respectively, P < 0.05) after 25 d treatment. Forest plays very important roles in global system with about 35% land area producing about 70% of total land net production. It is important to consider both elevated CO2 concentrations and different soil moisture when the possible effects of elevated CO2 concentration on trees are assessed. In this study, we grew Cinnamomum camphora seedlings under two CO2 concentrations （350 μmol/mol and 500μmnol/mol） and three soil moisture levels [80%, 60% and 40% FWC （field water capacity）] to focus on the effects of exposure of trees to elevated CO2 on underground and aboveground plant growth, and its dependence on soil moisture. The results indicated that high CO2 concentration has no significant effects on shoot height but significantly impacts shoot weight and ratio of shoot weight to height under three soil moisture levels. The response of root growth to CO2 enrichment is just reversed, there are obvious effects on root length growth, but no effects on root weight growth and ratio of root weight to length. The CO2 enrichment decreased 20.42%, 32.78%, 20.59% of weight ratio of root to shoot under 40%, 60% and 80% FWC soil water conditions, respectively. And elevated CO2 concentration significantly increased the water content in aboveground and underground parts. Then we concluded that high CO2 concentration favours more tree aboveground biomass growth than underground biomass growth under favorable soil water conditions. And CO2 enrichment enhanced lateral growth of shoot and vertical growth of root. The responses of plants to elevated CO2 depend on soil water availability, and plants may benefit more from CO2 enrichment with sufficient water supply.

Black carbon （BC） can strongly adsorb hydrophobic organic compounds （HOCs）. The HOC sorption to coated BC could be attenuated in soil and sediment compared with that of the parent BC. To study the potential causes of the sorption attenuation, humic acid （HA） and BC were isolated. Phenanthrene （PHE） was selected as the representative of HOCs. BC was coated with the precipitated HA. The PHE sorption to the HA-coated BC was determined. The HA coatings on BC could result in the significant sorption attenuation of PHE to BC. The attenuation varied in different HA origin and was positively correlated to the aromaticity of HA. The attenuation could be explained by the direct competition between HA and PHE for the available sorption sites on BC and the reduction of the available sorption sites as a result of the pore blockage of BC caused by the HA coatings. Therefore, the HA coatings on BC was one potential cause of the attenuation of HOC sorption to BC in soil and sediment.

Recreational value estimation of suburban leisure agriculture:a case study of the Qianjiangyue agritourism farm

As a form of economic and community development, agritourism has a strong and widespread appeal to all tourists. To explore the situation and value of agritourism in China, the Qianjiangyue agritourism farm located between Fuzhou City and Yongtai County was chosen to evaluate recreational values. The data was obtained from tourists and farm samples in Qianjiangyue agritourism farm by questionnaires. Two basic models including the zonal travel cost method （ZTCM） and the individual travel cost method （ITCM） were applied for data analysis. The recreational value estimation results obtained from ITCM and ZTCM showed that the total consumer surplus （CS） of the Qianjiangyue agritourism farm in 2Oll was estimated at 54,533,300 CNY （8,894,682 US$） which was equal to a CS per tourist of 3029.63 CNY （494.i5 US$）, and the annual recreational value of agricultural landscapes per hm2 was 36i,o78 CNY （58,893.82 US$）. The average annual recreational value of agritourism farmland was 15.7 times of that from traditional farming, and 6 times of present land business income. This paper will be helpful for exploring and utilizing appropriate environmental resources in China.
