Strongyloides stercoralis prevalence and diagnostics in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic

Background:Despite the high prevalence of strongyloidiasis in the Laotian population,Laotian hospitals still lack diagnostic capacity to appropriately diagnose Strongyloides stercoralis *** cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among hospitalized patients treated at Mahosot Hospital,the primary reference hospital of Lao People’s Democratic Republic(Lao PDR),and to validate feasible methods for diagnosing *** infection at hospital’s ***:Between September and December 2018,stool samples of 104 inpatients were investigated for *** infection by wet smear,Baermann technique,Koga Agar plate culture(KAPC),and real-time detection polymerase chain reaction(RTD-PCR)at the Infectious Diseases Ward of the Mahosot Hospital in *** sensitivity,the specificity,the negative predictive value(NPV)of each diagnostic test,as well as their combination(s)was calculated using a composite reference standard(CRS).The correlation of the different test methods was assessed by chi-square or Fisher’s exact ***’s kappa coefficient was used to assess the diagnostic agreement of the different test ***:The overall prevalence of *** infections among the study population was 33.4%.The cumulative infection prevalence statistically significantly increased from the lowest age group of 40 years and below(22.4%),to the medium(40.0%)and to the oldest age group of 61 year and above(72.7%)(P=0.003).The cumulative infection prevalence of CRS was considerably higher in male(40.4%)compared to female patients(28.1%),but not statistically different(P=0.184).The diagnostic sensitivity of Baermann technique,KAPC,RTD-PCR,and the combination of Baermann technique and KAPC were 60.0,60.0,74.3,and 77.1%,*** 13 patients(37.1%)of the total 35 *** patients diagnosed with any technique had a simultaneously positive diagnostic test with Baer

Zika virus(ZIKV)is the causative agent of a viral infection that causes neurological complications in newborns and adults *** wide transmission route and alarming spread rates are of great concern to the scientific *** trials have been conducted to develop treatment options for ZIKV *** review highlights the latest developments in the fields of vaccinology and pharmaceuticals developments for ZIKV infection.A systematic and comprehensive approach was used to gather relevant and up-to-date data so that inferences could be made about the gaps in therapeutic *** results indicate that several therapeutic interventions are being tested against ZIKV infection,such as DNA vaccines,subunit vaccines,live-attenuated vaccines,virus-vector-based vaccines,inactivated vaccines,virus-like particles,and mRNA-based *** addition,approved anti-ZIKV drugs that can reduce the global burden are *** many vaccine candidates for ZIKV are at different stages of development,none of them have received Food and Drug Authority approval for use up to *** issue of side effects associated with these drugs in vulnerable newborns and pregnant women is a major obstacle in the therapeutic pathway.

Predictors of anti-SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity:An Egyptian population-based study

Background:Population-based studies on the determinants of COVID-19 seroprevalence constitute a cornerstone in guiding appropriate preventive *** studies are scarce in Egypt,thus we conducted this study to explore risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 ***:This survey included 2919 participants from 10 Egyptian *** were tested for SARS-CoV-2 spike(S)and nucleocapsid(N)*** and multivariate analyses were performed to identify associated factors and predictors of seropositivity regarding sociodemographic factors,clinical data,and personal practices of participants.A subgroup analysis was performed to investigate the occupational risks of ***:Seropositivity was recorded in 1564 participants(53.6%).Independent predictors of seropositivity in-cluded non-smokers(aOR=1.817;95%CI:1.407-2.346,p=0.000),having blood group A(aOR=1.231;95%CI:1.016-1.493,p=0.034),a history of COVID-19 infection(aOR=2.997;95%CI:2.176-4.127,p=0.000),COVID-19 vaccination(aOR=4.349;95%CI:2.798-6.759,p=0.000),higher crowding index(aOR=1.229;95%CI:1.041-1.451,p=0.015),anosmia and/or ageusia(aOR=3.453;95%CI:2.661-4.481,p=0.000)and history of fever(aOR=1.269;95%CI:1.033-1.560,p=0.023).healthcare worker and Obesity/overweight were additional significant predictors of seropositivity among the working participants(aOR=1.760;95%CI:1.301-2.381,p=0.000 and aOR=1.384;95%CI:1.059-1.808,p=0.019,respectively).Additional factors showing association with seropositivity in the univariate analysis were:female gender,age group(15-39 years),higher educational level(preparatory and above),lack of environmental disinfection and having roommates at the *** was a positive correlation between the titers of both *** was weakly corre-lated with anti-S titer,while anti-N was significantly correlated with the number of protective measures applied by the *** antibodies were significantly correlated with adult BMI,while both we

A review of concurrent infections of malaria and dengue in Asia

Concurrent infections of malaria and dengue are when both of these mosquito-borne diseases occur simultaneously in an individual. In this review, reported cases with these co-infections in Asia are discussed. The focus is on the overlapping clinical presentations and the difficulties encountered in differential diagnosis. Also, cases reported in some special conditions, viz., pregnancy, foetal infections, and co-infections with one or more other infectious agents are highlighted. Due to similar clinical presentations of malaria and dengue, these co-infections may give rise to an incorrect diagnosis. Moreover, the treatment regimens for these co-infections are not the same as those for ***, a delay in implementing the appropriate treatment regimen for these concurrent infections due to poor diagnosis can be fatal. The present review is intended to increase awareness about the clinical significance and the importance of these co-infections among clinicians, public health workers and health authorities in the Asian region. Though malaria-dengue concurrent infections are seldom reported from the Asian region, it is probably increasing particularly in the countries known to be endemic for both of the above diseases. A compulsory reporting of the incidences of malaria-dengue concurrent infections is recommended.

Knowledge,attitude,beliefs and practices in HIV/AIDS in India:identifying the gender and rural-urban differences

The intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in health and changes in its composition are linked with major global human *** understanding what shapes the human intestinal microbiota composition and knowing ways of modulating the composition are critical for promotion of life-course health,combating diseases,and reducing global health *** aim to provide a foundation for understanding what shapes the human intestinal microbiota on an individual and global scale,and how interventions could utilize this information to promote life-course health and reduce global health *** briefly review experiences within the first 1,000 days of life and how long-termexposures to environmental elements or geographic specific cultures have lasting impacts on the intestinal *** also discuss major public health threats linked to the intestinal microbiota,including antimicrobial resistance and disappearing microbial diversity due to *** order to promote global health,we argue that the interplay of the larger ecosystem with intestinal microbiota research should be utilized for future research and urge for global efforts to conserve microbial diversity.

STUDY OF LUNG FLUKES FROM PHILIPPINES——A PRELIMINARY REPORT

In this paper taxonomic study on paragonimus including their metacercariae obtainedfrom the crabs collected from Sorsogon, Luzon, Phi1ippines and adult worms and ova obtain-ed through animal feeding, with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealedthat there may exist two or more species of lung flukes in *** occurrence ofSemisulcospira libertina in addition to Antemelania dactylus (Lea) as an additional snailhost is mentioned for the first time. The chromosome Karyotyping of the adult worms revealed that they belong to thediploid pattern. Electronic scanning showed that the cuticular spines of the Paragonimus from Sorsogonlook like "pineapple ears" both in distribution and In appearance, a new finding that has not been recorded before. In the lungs of a white rat killed 290 days after infection, two adult worms wereobtained within the solitary eyst. These 2 adult worms measured 4.5×2.5mm and 4.5×3.0 mm respectively. Their unusually small size and somewhat round shape suggest that theymay be of a different species from those hitherto reported in the Philippines. Clearcut evidence is presented for the first time, demonstrating the occurrence of the phemomenon of cross fertilization (allogamy) of lung flukes.
