A review on tribology of polymer composite coatings

Self-lubricating polymer composite coatings,with tailorable tribological and mechanical properties,have been widely employed on mechanical parts to reduce friction and wear,which saves energy and improves the overall performance for applications such as aerospace satellite parts,shafts,gears,and *** addition of functional fillers can overcome the limitations of single-polymer coatings and extend the service life of the coatings by providing a combination of low friction,high wear resistance,high load bearing,high temperature resistance,and high *** paper compares the heat resistance,and the tribological and mechanical properties of common polymer matrices,as well as the categories of functional fillers that improve the coating *** scopes,process parameters,advantages,and limitations of the preparation methods of polymer coatings are discussed in *** tribological properties of the composite coatings with different matrices and fillers are compared,and the lubrication mechanisms are *** reduce friction by promoting the formation of transfer films or liquid shear *** of the mechanical properties of the composite coatings with fillers of different morphologies is described in terms of strengthening and toughening mechanisms,including a stress transfer mechanism,shear yielding,crack bridging,and interfacial *** test and enhancement methods for the adhesion properties between the coating and substrate are *** coating adhesion can be enhanced through mechanical treatment,chemical treatment,and energy treatment of the ***,we propose the design strategies for high-performance polymer composite coating systems adapted to specific operating conditions,and the limitations of current polymer composite coating research are identified.

Stress-augmented thermal activation:tribology feels the force

In stress-augmented thermal activation, the activation energy barrier that controls the rate of atomic and molecular processes is reduced by the application of stress, with the result that the rate of these processes increases exponentially with applied stress. This concept has particular relevance to tribology, and since its development in the early twentieth century, it has been applied to develop important models of plastic flow, sliding friction, rheology, wear, and tribochemistry. This paper reviews the development of stress-augmented thermal activation and its application to all of these areas of tribology. The strengths and limitations of the approach are then discussed and future directions considered. From the scientific point of view, the concept of stress-augmented thermal activation is important since it enables the development of models that describe macroscale tribological performance, such as friction coefficient or tribofilm formation, in terms of the structure and behaviour of individual atoms and molecules. This both helps us understand these processes at a fundamental level and also provides tools for the informed design of lubricants and surfaces.

Nano-tribology through molecular dynamics simulations

The solidification and interfacial slip in nanometer-scale lubricating films as well as the contact and adhesion of metal crystals have been studied via molecular dynamics simulations. Results show that the critical pressure for the solid-liquid transition declines as the film thickness decreases, in-dicating that the lubricant in the thin films may exist in a solid-like state. It is also found that the interfa-cial slip may occur in thin films at relatively low shear rate, and there is a good correlation between the slip phenomenon and the lubricant solidification. The simulations reveal that a micro-scale adhesion may take place due to the atomic jump during the process of approaching or separating of two smooth crystal surfaces, which provides important information for understanding the origin of interfacial friction.

Formation and tribology properties of polyfluoroal-kylmethacrylate film on the magnetic head surface

A polyfluoroalkylmethacrylate (PFAM) film has been coated on the surface of the magnetic head by a dipping coating method to modify the surface properties. The films were characterized by means of a time-of-flight secon- dary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS), contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The re- sults indicate that the concentration of the solution is the main factor affecting the thickness, contact angle and surface topography of the film. The magnetic head with the PFAM film at a concentration of 500 ppm exhibits the best tribology properties, and the stiction between the magnetic head and the disk is no more than 2.4 g after 20000 contact start stop (CSS) cycles. Therefore, a fully covered PFAM film with few defects helps improve the tribology properties of the mag- netic head, and decrease the adsorbed contaminant on the magnetic head surface.

Adhesion and surface forces in polymer tribology——A review

Polymer tribology is a fast growing area owing to increasing applications of polymers and polymer composites in industry, transportation, and many other areas of economy. Surface forces are very important for polymer contact, but the real origin of such forces has not been fully investigated. Strong adhesive interaction between polymers leads to an increase in the friction force, and hence, the asperities of the material may be removed to form wear particles or transfer layers on the counterface. The theory of polymer adhesion has not been completely elucidated yet and several models of adhesion have been proposed from the physical or chemical standpoints. This paper is focused on the research efforts on polymer adhesion with emphasis on adhesion mechanisms, which are very important in the analysis of polymer friction and wear.

Progresses and problems in nano-tribology

The recent development in the four areas of nano-tribology is analysed. They are micro- and nano-friction and wear, micro- and nano-tribological engineering. The research methods in nano-tribology and thin film lubrication in which five branches are included: equivalent viscusity and flowing characteristics of micro fluid, the transition between ordered molecular film and disordered one, the essence of matrix influence on thin film lubrication, the lubrication mechanism of high polymer lubricants and the problem of superlubricity. Meanwhile, more than 35 problems are proposed which should be solved in the future.
