SOLUTION OF THE PLANE STRESS PROBLEMS OF STRAIN-HARDENING MATERIALS DESCRIBED BY POWER-LAW USING THE COMPLEX PSEUDO-STRESS FUNCTION

In the present paper, the compatibility equation for the plane stress problems of power-law materials is transformed into a biharmonic equation by introducing the so-called complex pseudo-stress function, which makes it possible to solve the elastic-plastic plane stress problems of strain hardening materials described by power-law using the complex variable function method like that in the linear elasticity theory. By using this general method, the close-formed analytical solutions for the stress, strain and displacement components of the plane stress problems of power-law materials is deduced in the paper, which can also be used to solve the elasto-plastic plane stress problems of strain-hardening materials other than that described by power-law. As an example, the problem of a power-law material infinite plate containing a circular hole under uniaxial tension is solved by using this method, the results of which are compared with those of a known asymptotic analytical solution obtained by the perturbation method.

In this paper, a new Banach space ZH is defined, and it is proved that there is completeness of eigenfunction system (symplectic orthogonal system) of a class of Hamiltonian system in ZH space. We have also proved the following results: ZH space can be continuously imbedded to L-2[0,1] X L-2[0,1], but ZH not equal L-2[0,1] X L-1[0,1].

Predication of Plastic Flow Characteristics in Ferrite/Pearlite Steel Using a Fern Unit Cell Method

The flow stress of ferrite/pearlite steel under uni-axial tension was simulated with finite element method (FEM) by applying commercial software MARC/MENTAT. Flow stress curves of ferrite/pearlite steels were calculated based on unit cell model. The effects of volume fraction, distribution and the aspect ratio of pearlite on tensile properties have been investigated.

This paper presents an elasto-viscoplastic consistent tangent operator (CTO) based boundary element formulation, and application for calculation of path-domain independentJ integrals (extension of the classicalJ integrals) in nonlinear crack analysis. When viscoplastic deformation happens, the effective stresses around the crack tip in the nonlinear region is allowed to exceed the loading surface, and the pure plastic theory is not suitable for this situation. The concept of consistency employed in the solution of increment viscoplastic problem, plays a crucial role in preserving the quadratic rate asymptotic convergence of iteractive schemes based on Newton's method. Therefore, this paper investigates the viscoplastic crack problem, and presents an implicit viscoplastic algorithm using the CTO concept in a boundary element framework for path-domain independentJ integrals. Applications are presented with two numerical examples for viscoplastic crack problems andJ integrals.

THEORY OF THICK-WALLED SHELLS AND ITS APPLICATION IN CYLINDRICAL SHELL

In this paper, a theory of thick-walled shells is established by means of Hellinger-Reissner's variational principle, with displacement and stress assumptions. The displacements are expanded into power series of the thickness coordinate. Only the first four and the first three terms are used for the displacements parallel and normal to the middle surface respectively. The normal extruding and transverse shear stresses are assumed to be cubic polynomials and to satisfy the boundary stress conditions on the outer and inner surfaces of the shell. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by means of variational principle. As an example, a thick-walled cylindrical shell is disscussed with the theory proposed. Furthermore, a photoelastic experiment has been carried out, and the results are in fair agreement with the computations.

AN IMPROVED CONTACT-IMPACT ALGORITHM FOR EXPLICIT INTEGRATION FEM

Although the penalty algorithm is simple and direct in concept, it has a defect that the contact forces are badly dependent on the chosen penalty factor. An improved contact-impact algorithm for the explicit integration FEM is proposed in the present paper. Based on the fact that bodies cannot penetrate into each other on the contact faces, a set of equations with the additional unknown contact forces on the slave nodes can be formed in a new system configuration. By solving these equations, the correct contact forces could be obtained without using the penalty factor.

Microstructure-Properties Correlation of Dual Phase Steels Produced by Controlled Rolling Process

The purpose of this research is to quantify the effects of compositional and processing parameters on the microstruc-ture and properties of dual phase steel produced directly by hot rolling and rapid cooling. Steels with the base composition of 0.1%C, 1.4%Si, and 1.0%Mn with additions of 0.5%Cr to influence hardenability, 0.04%Nb to retard recrystallization in the latter stages of rolling, or 0.02%Ti to inhibit grain growth during and after reheating were investigated. Investigation was made to predict microstructure evolution and to correlate microstructure with processing parameters. The effects of the important microstructure parameters such as ferrite grain size, martensite volume fraction (VM) and morphology (polygonal or fibrous) on the tensile and impact properties are discussed. Multiple linear regression analysis of the ultimate tensile strength has shown that, increasing VM and martensite microhardness and grain refinement of ferrite are the major contributions to increase the strength of the steel. It was found that the dual-phase steel produced by controlled rolling process, with a microstructure which consisted of fine grained ferrite (4 um) and 35%~40% fibrous martensite, presented optimum tensile and impact properties because of enhanced resistance to crack propagation.

To eliminate oscillation and overbounding of finite element solutions of classical heat conduction equation, the author and Xiao have put forward two new concepts of monotonies and have derived and proved several criteria. This idea is borrowed here to deal with generalized conduction equation and finite element criteria for eliminating oscillation and overbounding are also presented. Some new and useful conclusions are drawn.
