Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharide-Fe(Ⅲ) co.plex promotes intestinal development as a new iron supplement

Iron is a crucial micronutrient, and its deficiency can have detrimental effects on the health of infants. Dietary polysaccharide-iron(Ⅲ) co.plexes(PICs) are promising for addressing iron deficiency due to their minimal adverse reactions and high iron absorption rate. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharide-Fe(Ⅲ) co.plex(EP-Fe) on newborns, using 3-day weaned piglets as the iron-deficiency model. Results showed that EP-Fe improved iron levels and promoted intestinal development in piglets. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that EP-Fe increased the survival of intestinal epithelial cells under hypoxia by upregulating the expression of genes that promote the development of the vascular system. Additionally, EP-Fe enhanced the muco.al barrier functions by inhibiting myosin light chain kinase(MLCK)/phosphorylated myosin light chain(p-MLC) signaling pathway to increase the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins. Furthermore, the 16S r RNA gene sequencing of gut microbiota showed that EP-Fe promoted the enrichment of Bacteroides_fragilis and other gut microbes that can metabolize carbohydrates. In co.clusion, EP-Fe is an effective iron supplement for newborns, and it can be developed as a co.prehensive nutritional supplement.

A data-driven framework with strong generalization capabilities is proposed to effectively extract features and easily access battery capacity. This framework can make highly accurate predictions for the battery capacities of plug-in electric vehicles. The feature extraction process is entirely based on statistics, which are always available and can be generalized to various types of battery data. An improved ampere-hour integral method can easily access battery capacity with just short-charging segments lasting 500 s. Several machine-learning models are trained to verify the framework's effectiveness, with the best model achieving a test error of 0.84 % based on leave-one-out validation. SHAP values are used to provide a reasonable interpretation of the relationships between the co.structed features and model outputs. The proposed framework offers advantages such as reduced co.putational resources, wide generalization, and high prediction accuracy, showing great potential for battery management.

Effect of filter-feeding fish silver carp on phytoplankton species and size distribution in surface water:A field study in water works

Silver carp were introduced into the pre-sedimentation pond to co.trol excessive phytoplankton in raw water. The effectiveness of the filter-feeding silver carp on phytoplankton co.trol and the effect of silver carp on phytoplankton co.munity were investigated. The results showed that Microcystis co.ld be effectively removed by silver carp stocked in the pre-sedimentation pond, and simultaneously, the co.centration of single-cell phytoplankton increased obviously. The difference in phytoplankton species and single- cell phytoplankton size between in the water and in the gut of silver carp indicated that phytoplankton smaller than 5 μm, such as Chamydomonas and Platymonas, were almost not be filtered by silver carp, phytoplankton with the size between 5 and 20μm co.ld be partly filtered, and large size phytoplankton, mainly co.ony-forming Microcystis co.ld be filtered almost co.pletely. These filter- feeding characteristics directly caused the phytoplankton size distribution biased toward miniaturization. Therefore, this biological treatment using silver carp co.ld be applied only to deal with groups of Microcystis-dominated eutrophic water, and was not appropriate in water bodies where single-cell micro phytoplankton were dominant. Especially when silver carp are used in water treatment, a cautious attitude should be taken based on the evaluation of phytoplankton biomass and species structure features in raw water.

co.rosion Rate and Scale of Cast Iron in Water Distribution Systems

A specialised electrochemical measurement cell was plugged into a pilot water distribution system to simulate the pipe inner-wall co.rosion. The linear polarisation resistance(LPR) technique and electrochemical impedance spectrosco.y(EIS) were measured in real time to study the variation of the co.rosion rate(CR) and scale of cast iron. Three co.rosion stages were observed acco.ding to the LPR analysis: an initial stage with significantly fluctuating CR, a developmental stage with slowly decreasing CR, and a stable stage with a low CR of approximately 0.157 5 mm·a^(-1). The EIS revealed that the scales with a co.pact outer layer and a porous inner layer finally formed in the stable stage, and the polarisation resistance was approximately 2 175 ?·cm^2. A physico.hemical analysis of the scales showed that ferric oxides, oxyhydroxides and calcite made the outer layer co.pact and effectively limited the diffusion of oxygen through the scales, which resulted in a low CR.

Changes in different organic matter fractions during co.ventional treatment and advanced treatment

XAD-8 resin isolation of organic matter in water was used to divide organic matter into the hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions. A pilot plant was used to investigate the change in both fractions during co.ventional and advanced treatment processes. The treatment of hydrophobic organics （HPO）, rather than hydrophilic organicas （HPI）, should carry greater emphasis due to HPO’s higher trihalomethane formation potential （THMFP） and haloacetic acid formation potential （HAAFP）. The removal of hydrophobic matter and its transmission into hydrophilic matter reduced ultimate DBP yield during the disinfection process. The results showed that sand filtration, ozonation, and biological activated carbon （BAC） filtration had distinct influences on the removal of both organic fractions. Additionally, the co.bination of processes changed the organic fraction proportions present during treatment. The use of ozonation and BAC maximized organic matter removal efficiency, especially for the hydrophobic fraction. In sum, the co.bination of pre-ozonation, co.ventional treatment, and O 3 -BAC removed 48% of dissolved organic carbon （DOC）, 60% of HPO, 30% of HPI, 63% of THMFP, and 85% of HAAFP. The use of co.ventional treatment and O 3 -BAC without pre-ozonation had a co.parable performance, removing 51% of DOC, 56% of HPO, 45% of HPI, 61% of THMFP, and 72% of HAAFP. The effectiveness of this analysis method indicated that resin isolation and fractionation should be standardized as an applicable test to help assess water treatment process efficiency.
