AIM： To evaluate the efficacy and safety of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） combined with photodynamic therapy （PDT） versus anti-VEGF monotherapy for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy （PCV）. METHODS： We conducted a Meta-analysis of 9 studies to compare the efficacy and safety between combined therapy and anti-VEGF monotherapy for PCV. The programs of RevMan 5.3 and Stata 12.0 were used to analyze data. RESULTS： The best corrected visual acuity （BCVA） in combined therapy group were significantly better than those of anti-VEGF monotherapy group at 6, 24 and 36mo, with pooled weighted means differences （WMDs） of 0.12 （0.06, 0.18）, 0.25 （0.12, 0.38） and 0.28 （0.13, 0.43）, respectively. The central retinal thickness （CRT） reductions in combined therapy group were higher than that in anti- VEGF monotherapy group at 1, 3, 6 and 9mo, with pooled WMDs of 63.90 （20.41, 107.38）, 33.47 （4.69, 62.24）, 30.57 （0.12, 60.01） and 28.00 （2.51, 53.49）, respectively. The regression rate of polyps in combined therapy group was much higher than that in anti-VEGF monotherapy group [RD： 0.47 （0.26, 0.68）; P〈0.0001]. The adverse event retinal hemorrhage did not differ significantly between the two groups. CONCLUSION： Our findings clearly document that anti- VEGF combined with PDT is a more effective therapy for PCV compared with anti-VEGF monotherapy. Furthermore, combined therapy does not increase the incidence of retinal hemorrhage.

AIM:To investigate the protective effect of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells(hUCMSCs)modified by the LIF gene on the retinal function of diabetic model rats and preliminarily explore the possible ***:A stably transfected cell line of hUCMSCs overexpressing leukemia inhibitory factor(LIF)was *** was verified by fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qPCR).Forty-eight adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a normal control group(group A),streptozotocin-induced diabetic control group(group B),diabetic rats at 3mo injected with empty vector-transfected hUCMSCs(group C)or injected with LIF-hUCMSCs(group D).Four weeks after the intravitreal injection,analyses in all groups included retinal function using flash electroretinogram(F-ERG),retinal blood vessel examination of retinal flat mounts perfused with fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran(FITCdextran),and retinal structure examination of sections using hematoxylin and eosin *** levels of adiponectin(APN),high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hsCRP),and neurotrophin-4(NT-4)in each group was detected using immunohistochemistry,PCR,Western blotting,and ELISA,***:A stable transgenic cell line of LIF-hUCMSCs was constructed.F-ERG and FITC-dextran examinations revealed no abnormalities of retinal structure and function in group A,severe damage of the retinal blood vessels and function in group B,and improved retinal structure and function in group C and especially group ***,ELISA,and Western blot analyses revealed progressively higher APN and NT-4 expression levels in groups B,C,and D than in group ***-CRP expression was significantly higher in group B than in groups A,C,and D,and was significantly higher in group C than in group D(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:LIF-hUCMSCs protect the retina of diabetic rats by upregulating APN and NT-4 expression and downregulating hs-CRP expression in the retina.

AIM:To evaluate therapeutic outcomes of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells(HUC-MSCs)treatment in patients with refractory ***:A retrospective and noncomparative review was performed on four patients with refractory uveitis from December 2013 to December ***-MSCs were administered intravenously at a dose of 1×106 cells/*** response,relapse rate,change of visual acuity,and other metrics were ***:All four patients presented with responses to HUC-MSCs treatment,with three males and one *** numbers of uveitis attacks per year after the HUCMSCs treatment(0,2,0,0 respectively)all decreased compared with the numbers before the treatment(3,6,4,4 respectively).The oral steroid and immunosuppressive agents were tapered in all patients without recrudescence of ocular inflammation,and three patients discontinued their oral medicine at the last *** best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)of 3 patients was improved to varying degrees,and the BCVA of 1 patient remained at 20/20(Snellen chart)from the first to the last ***:The study provides an effective therapy of HUC-MSCs in maintaining remission in patients affected by uveitis refractory to previous immunosuppressant treatments.

AIM： To evaluate corneal astigmatism after phacoemulsification using 2.2 mm or 1.8 mm clear corneal micro-incisions and its effects on visual ***： Sixty cases （60 eyes） with cataract were randomly divided into groups A （n=30） and B （n=30） respectively underwent 2.2 mm and 1.8 mm clear corneal tunnel incision phacoemulsification combined with folding intraocular lens implantation from the time direction of 11：00. On day 1 and at 1, 4, and 6wk after operation, patients’ vision was measured and both the corneal curvature and corneal thickness （CT） were recorded using ***： The measured surgery-induced astigmatism （SIA） in both groups A and B peaked on day 1 after operation, and then gradually decreased and eventually stabilized in week 4. No statistically significant difference was found in corneal astigmatism between two groups （P〉0.05）. The measured corneal astigmatism at 4wk and 6wk postoperatively were 0.28±0.09 D and 0.27±0.10 D for groups A and 0.27±0.09 D and 0.25±0.10 D for groups B without statistically significant difference （P〉0.05）. In addition, no significant differences in visual acuity and CT were found between groups A and B before or after ***： Both 2.2 mm and 1.8 mm micro-incision cataract surgeries result in relatively small SIA with no difference in visual function and corneal astigmatism between two surgery approaches. Thus, the two types of surgical systems are safe and efficient for cataract treatment, by which satisfactory uncorrected visual acuity can be regained early postoperatively.

AIM: To observe morphological optic disc characteristics in patients with preclinical diabetic retinopathy(DR) associated with chronic angle-closure glaucoma(CACG). METHODS: Twenty-two cases(43 eyes) of preclinical DR associated with CACG were enrolled in group A; 24 preclinical DR cases(46 eyes) were enrolled in group B; 26 CACG cases(51 eyes) were enrolled in group C; and 49 normal controls(49 eyes) were enrolled in group D. All underwent optical coherence tomography to measure the horizontal C/D ratio(HCDR), C/D area ratio(CDaR), vertical C/D ratio(VCDR), rim area(RA), cup volume(CV), disc area(DA) and average retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL) thickness. RESULTS: The ages of groups A, B, C, and D were 67.60±3.36, 66.78±3.33, 65.98±3.83, and 67.54±3.17 y, respectively. The HCDR values in groups A, B, and C were distinct relative to those in group D(P0.05). The CDaR values in group A were higher in comparison to those in groups B and D(P0.05). The RA values in group A were smaller relative to those in groups B and D(P0.05). The CV values in group A were greater in comparison to those in groups B and D(P0.05). DA was not distinct for comparisons of two groups among the four groups(P>0.05). HCDR value correlated with mean nasal RNFL thickness(r=-0.909,P<0.0001), mean superior RNFL thickness(r=-0.866, P<0.0001), mean inferior RNFL thickness(r=-0.650, P<0.001) and mean temporal RNFL thickness(r=-0.562, P<0.01) in group A. AIM：To investigate whether umbilical cord human mesenchymal stem cell（UC-MSC）was able to differentiate into neural stem cell and neuron.·METHODS：The umbilical cords were o btained from pregnant women with their written consent and the approval of the Clinic Ethnics ***-MSC were isolated by adherent culture in the medium contains 20%fetal bovine serum（FBS）,then they were maintained in the medium contain 10%FBS and induced to neural cells in neural differentiation *** investigated whether UC-MSC was able to differentiate into neural stem cell and neuron by using flow cytometry,reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction（RT-PCR）and immunofluorescence（IF）analyzes.·R ESULTS：A substantial number of UC-MSC was harvested using the tissue explants adherent method at about *** cytometric study revealed that these cells expressed common markers of MSCs,such as CD105（SH2）,CD73（SH3）and *** induction of differentiation of neural stem cells,the cells began to form clusters;RT-PCR and IF showed that the neuron specific enolase（NSE）and neurogenic differentiation 1-positive cells reached 87.3%±14.7%and 72.6%±11.8%,*** showed neuronal cell differentiation after induced,including neuron-like protrusions,plump cell body,obviously and stronger ***-PCR and IF analysis showed that microtubule-associated protein 2（MAP2）and nuclear factor-M-positive cells reached 43.1%±10.3%and 69.4%±19.5%,respectively.·CONCLUSION：Human umbilical cord derived MSCs can be cultured and proliferated and differentiate into neural stem cells,which may be a valuable source for cell therapy of neurodegenerative eye diseases.
