Metrics for macroscale invasion and dispersal patterns

Aim The ability to quantitatively measure the continuum of macroscale patterns of species invasion is a first step toward deeper understand-ing of their causal *** took advantage of two centuries worth of herbarium data,to evaluate a set of metrics to measure macroscale patterns,allowing cross-species comparisons of inva-sive expansion across large geographic *** We used herbarium specimens to reconstruct county-level invasion histories for two non-native plants(Alliaria petiolata and Lonicera japonica),with distinct spatiotemporal distribution patterns over the past two *** county centroids from species’ini-tial occurrences,we quantified point pattern metrics from multiple disciplines(*** crime analysis,landscape ecology etc.)that are historically used at smaller spatial scales,to evaluate their abil-ity to detect macroscale spatial diffusion and amount of directional *** were further assessed for their ease of use,data requirements,independence from other metrics and intuitiveness of *** Findings We identified four suitable metrics for distinguishing differences in spatial patterns:(i)standard distance,(ii)number of patches,(iii)Euclidean nearest neighbor summary class statistic coefficient of variation and(iv)mean center that when applied to county-level presence data allowed us to determine the directions by which distributions expanded and if distributions increased via outward expansion,infilling and/or jump dispersal *** metrics when compared during the same invasion phase are capable of quantifying macroscale variability among species in their distri-butional and dispersal *** able to quantify differences among species in these patterns is important in understanding the drivers of species dispersal *** metrics therefore repre-sent a simple yet thorough toolset for achieving this goal.

The mid-infrared spectral region opens up new possibilities for applications such as molecular spectroscopy with high spatial and frequency *** example,the mid-infrared light provided by synchrotron sources has helped for early diagnosis of several ***,alternative light sources at the table-top scale would enable better access to these state-of-the-art characterizations,eventually speeding up research in biology and *** supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear waveguides pumped by compact fiber lasers represents an appealing alternative to ***,we introduce orientation-patterned gallium arsenide waveguides as a new versatile platform for mid-infrared supercontinuum *** and fiber-based pump lasers are optimized in tandem to allow for the group velocities of the signal and the idler waves to match near the degeneracy *** configuration exacerbates supercontinuum generation from 4 to 9μm when waveguides are pumped at 2750 nm with few-nanojoule energy *** brightness of the novel mid-infrared source exceeds that of the thirdgeneration synchrotron source by a factor of *** also show that the nonlinear dynamics is strongly influenced by the choice of waveguide and laser parameters,thus offering an additional degree of freedom in tailoring the spectral profile of the generated *** an approach then opens new paths for high-brightness mid-infrared laser sources development for high-resolution spectroscopy and ***,thanks to the excellent mechanical and thermal properties of the waveguide material,further power scaling seems feasible,allowing for the generation of watt-level ultra-broad frequency combs in the mid-infrared.

AIM To evaluate the association between patientdisease knowledge of inflammatory bowel disease （IBD）and health related quality of life （HrQoL） and identifypatient and disease related predictors of patientknowledge of ***： We performed a cross-sectional study ofIBD patients with an established diagnosis of IBD longerthan 3 mo prior to enrollment. The Crohn＇s and colitisknowledge score （CCKNOW） and short inflammatorybowel disease questionnaire （SIBDQ） were selfadministeredto assess patient knowledge of IBDand HrQoL, respectively. Demographic and diseasecharacteristics were abstracted from the electronicmedical record. The correlation between CCKNOWand SIBDQ scores was assessed by a linear regressionmodel. Associations of patient knowledge and thevariables of interest were calculated using ***： A total of 101 patients were *** race, younger age at diagnosis, and having a college or post-graduate degree were significantlyassociated with higher CCKNOW scores. Patients withCD had higher CCKNOW scores compared to patientswith ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel diseasetype unclassified, P 〈 0.01. There was no significantcorrelation between overall CCKNOW and SIBDQ scores（r^2 = 0.34, P = 0.13）. The knowledge sub-domain ofdiet in CCKNOW was negatively correlated with HrQoL（r^2 = 0.69, P 〈 0.01）.CONCLUSION： IBD diagnosis at a younger age inaddition to Caucasian race and higher education weresignificantly associated with higher knowledge aboutIBD. However, patient knowledge of IBD was notcorrelated with HrQoL. Further studies are required tostudy the effect of patient knowledge of IBD on otherclinical outcomes.

resolution of hemolysis from pump thrombus during left ventricular assist device exchange

A 50-year-old male who underwent a Heart Mate Ⅱ left ventricular assist device placement for ischemic cardiomyopathy presented with discolored urine and hemolysis 3 mo after the operation. His hemolysis was thought to be due to thrombosis within the pump. Imaging studies were not able to visualize a left ventricular thrombus. Medical management with anticoagulation failed and he underwent surgery for a pump exchange. Intraoperatively, a firm thrombus was found within the pump of the Heart Mate Ⅱ, and the color of the urine changed dramatically from cola-colored to yellow which enabled us to confirm the diagnosis.

Percutaneous coronary intervention of totally occluded coronary venous bypass grafts:An exercise in futility?

BACKGrOUND Percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI)of diseased saphenous vein grafts(SVG)continues to pose a clinical *** PCI guidelines give a class iii recommendation against performing PCI on chronically occluded ***,contemporary outcomes after SVG intervention have incrementally improved with distal protection devices,intracoronary vasodilators,drug-eluting stents,and prolonged dual antiplatelet *** To reassess the procedural and long-term outcomes of PCI for totally occluded SVG with contemporary *** This was a retrospective observational study conducted at a single university *** study population consisted of 35 consecutive patients undergoing PCI of totally occluded ***-procedure dual antiplatelet therapy was continued for a minimum of one year and aspirin was continued *** outcomes were assessed at a mean follow-up of 1221±1038 *** primary outcome was freedom from a major adverse cardiac event(MACE)defined as the occurrence of any of the following:death,myocardial infarction,stroke,repeat bypass surgery,repeat PCI,or graft *** The study group included 29 men and 6 women with a mean age of 69±12 *** was present in 14(40%)*** patients had Canadian Heart Classification class iii or IV *** presentation was an acute coronary syndrome in 34(97%)*** SVG age was 12±5 *** duration of occlusion was acute(24 h to 30 d)in 26%,and late(>30 d)in 40%.PCI was initially successful in 29/35 SVG occlusions(83%).Total stent length was 52±35 *** complications of distal embolization or no-reflow occurred in 6(17%)*** longer term follow-up,MACE-free survival was only 30%at 3 years and 17%at 5 *** PCI of totally occluded SVG can be performed with a high procedural success ***,its clinical utility remains limited by poor follow-up outcomes.

We report on the concept of an innovative source to produce polarized proton/deuteron beams of a kinetic energy up to several GeV from a laser-driven plasma accelerator. Spin effects have been implemented into the particle-in-cell(PIC) simulation code VLPL(Virtual Laser Plasma Lab) to make theoretical predictions about the behavior of proton spins in laser-induced plasmas. Simulations of spin-polarized targets show that the polarization is conserved during the acceleration process. For the experimental realization, a polarized HCl gas-jet target is under construction using the fundamental wavelength of a Nd:YAG laser system to align the HCl bonds and simultaneously circularly polarized light of the fifth harmonic to photo-dissociate, yielding nuclear polarized H atoms. Subsequently, their degree of polarization is measured with a Lamb-shift polarimeter. The final experiments, aiming at the first observation of a polarized particle beam from laser-generated plasmas, will be carried out at the 10 PW laser system SULF at SIOM, Shanghai.
