BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis between depressive pseudodementia and Alzheimer disease (AD) is a clinical problem, and it is more difficult to diagnose depression in AD. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the incidence and characters of depression in AD patients, and investigate the correlative factors. DESIGN: A randomized controlled study. SETTING: Beijing Geriatrics Hospital. PARTICIPANTS: From October 2005 to July 2006, 34 patients with probable AD were selected from the Department of Dementia, Beijing Geriatrics Hospital according to National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Diseases and Stroke/Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders Association (NINCDS-ADRDA) criteria for AD. There were 16 males and 18 females, aged 63-85 years. Meanwhile, 30 patients with other chronic neurological disorders (CND) were selected from our hospital as the CND control group, there were 16 males and 14 females, aged 55-85 years, including 18 cases of cerebrovascular sequela, 9 of Parkinson disease and 3 of migraineurs. Another 30 patients with chronic physical diseases (CPD) were enrolled as the CPD control group, there were 15 males and 15 females, aged 57-83 years, including 15 cases of chronic bronchitis, 8 of hypertension and 7 of diabetes mellitus. Besides, 30 physical examinees were enrolled as the healthy control group, including 15 males and 15 females, aged 55-80 years. All the subjects were informed and agreed with the detection. METHODS: ① All the subjects underwent the Hamilton rating scale for depression (HAMD) (24 items) assessment, and the total score < 8 points was regarded as no depression, 8-20 as mild depression, 20-35 as moderate depression, ≥ 35 as severe depression. ② All the AD patients were assessed with Cornell scale for depression in dementia (CSDD) (19 items), and the total score < 8 points was regarded as no depression, and ≥ 8 as depression. Morbidity and Mortality Related to Infectious Diseases in the Roi Boudouin Paediatric ward in Senegal

Introduction: Infant and child morbidity and mortality linked to infections remain a major concern in both developed and developing countries. The general objective was to determine the characteristics of hospital morbidity and mortality linked to infectious pathologies in the pediatric department of the King Baudouin hospital center in Dakar. Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study focusing on children hospitalized from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021 in the pediatric department of the King Baudouin hospital center in Dakar. Results: During the study period, 1474 children were hospitalized for an infectious pathology in the pediatric department. The sex ratio was 1.48. Children aged between one and twelve months represented 34.12%. Morbidity due to respiratory and digestive infections was 42.33% and 33.45%, respectively. Pediatric hospital mortality was 0.75% with a predominance noted in infants between 1 and 12 months (55.86%). Respiratory, digestive infections, sepsis and neurological infections were the main causes of death. Factors associated with mortality were age (1 to 12 months) with p Conclusion: Reducing infant and child mortality linked to infectious diseases remains a crucial challenge to address for improving children’s health. Early detection of related signs, prevention of infections, and adequate care and monitoring of infants and children can contribute to this reduction.

Inhibition of Obtusifolin on retinal pigment epithelial cell growth under hypoxia

AIM: To explore the effect of Obtusifolin on retinal pigment epithelial cell growth under ***: In vitro chemical hypoxia model of ARPE-19 cells was established using cobalt chloride(CoCl2). Cell viability was tested by cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) assay. Western blot and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction were applied to detect proteins and mRNAs respectively. Flow cytometry was used to examine the cell cycle. Secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) was tested by using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).RESULTS: Under the chemical hypoxia model established by CoCl2, hypoxia inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α) mRNA and protein levels was up-regulated. Cell viability was increased and the proportion of S phase was higher. Obtusifolin could reduce cell viability under hypoxic conditions and arrest cells in G1 phase. Obtusifolin reduced the expression of Cyclin D1 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) in the hypoxic environment and increased the expression of p53 and p21. The levels of VEGF, VEGFR2 and eNOS proteins and mRNA were significantly increased under hypoxia while Obtusifolin inhibited the ***: Obtusifolin can inhibit cell growth under hypoxic conditions and down-regulate HIF-1/VEGF/eNOS secretions in ARPE-19 cells.

Meta-analysis of the clinical efficacy and safety of Urinary Kallidinogenase in the treatment of acute cerebral infarction
