The treatment of bone defects remains a great clinical *** the development of science and technology,bone tissue engineering technology has emerged,which can mimic the structure and function of natural bone tissues and create solutions for repairing or replacing human bone tissues based on biocompatible materials,cells and bioactive *** are favoured by researchers due to their high water content,degradability and good *** paper describes the hydrogel sources,roles and *** to the different types of stimuli,hydrogels are classified into three categories:physical,chemical and biochemical responses,and the applications of different stimuli-responsive hydrogels in bone tissue engineering are ***-responsive hydrogels can form a semi-solid with good adhesion based on different physiological environments,which can carry a variety of bone-enhancing bioactive factors,drugs and cells,and have a long retention time in the local area,which is conducive to a long period of controlled release;they can also form a scaffold for constructing tissue repair,which can jointly promote the repair of bone injury ***,it also has many defects,such as poor biocompatibility,immunogenicity and mechanical *** studies are still needed in the future to facilitate its clinical translation.

Correlation between prion protein gene codon 129 polymorphism and late-onset Alzheimer's disease

BACKGROUND： Studies addressing the correlation between prion protein gene codon 129 polymorphism, Alzheimer＇s disease, and cognitive disorders have mainly focused on Caucasians. However, prion protein gene codon 129 polymorphism is thought to also affect the Chinese Han and Wei populations. OBJECTIVE： To analyze the differences of prion protein gene codon 129 distribution among the elderly Chinese Han, East Asian, and Caucasian populations, and to study the correlation between prion protein gene codon 129 distribution and late-onset Alzheimer＇s disease. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A gene polymorphism analysis was performed in the Institute of Geriatrics, General Hospital of Chinese PLA between January 2006 and January 2007. PARTICIPANTS： A total of 152 elderly Chinese Han people were selected from the Beijing Troop cadre＇s Sanitarium. Among them, 60 patients with late-onset Alzheimer＇s disease, with a mean age of （82 ± 7） years （range 67-94 years） and disease course of （5.9 ± 4.4） years, comprising 44 males with a mean age of （83 ± 7） years and 16 females with a mean age of （78 ±7） years, were selected for the case group. An additional 92 healthy elderly subjects, with a mean of （76 ± 9） years （range 60-94 years）, comprising 76 males with a mean age of （77 ± 9） years and 16 females with a mean age of （70 ± 8） years, were selected for the control group. There were no significant differences in age and gender between the two groups （P〉 0.05）. METHODS： DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes using routine phenol/chloroform methodology. Prion protein gene codon 129 potymorphism and ApoE polymorphism were measured using PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The ApoEε allele was considered the standard for analyzing correlations between prion protein gene codon 129 polymorphism and late-onset Alzheimer＇s disease. Pancreatic surgery has been one of the last areas for the application of minimally invasive surgery(MIS)because there are many factors that make laparoscopic pancreas resections *** concept of service centralization has also limited expertise to a small cadre of high-volume centres in resource rich ***,this is not the environment that many surgeons in developing countries work *** patients often do not have the opportunity to travel to high volume centres for ***,we sought to review the existing data on MIS for the pancreas and to *** this paper,we review the evolution of MIS on the pancreas and discuss the incorporation of this service into low-volume and resource-poor countries,such as those in the *** paper has two ***,we performed a literature review evaluating all studies published on laparoscopic and robotic surgery of the *** data in the Caribbean is examined and we discuss tips for incorporating this operation into resource poor hospital *** pancreatic case volume in the Caribbean,and financial barriers to MIS in general,laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy,enucleation and cystogastrostomy are feasible operations to integrate in to a resource-limited healthcare *** is because they can be performed with minimal to no consumables and require an intermediate MIS skillset to complement an open pancreatic surgeon’s peri-operative experience.

Durable response to pulsatile icotinib for central nervous system metastases from EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer: A case report

BACKGROUND Central nervous system(CNS) metastases are a catastrophic complication of nonsmall cell lung cancer(NSCLC), including brain and leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, and are always accompanied by a poor prognosis. Despite the continuous development of existing treatments, the therapy of CNS metastases remains *** SUMMARY We report a patient who was definitively diagnosed with brain and leptomeningeal metastases from NSCLC with a targeted mutation in epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR). A standard dosage of icotinib(125 mg three times daily) was implemented but ineffective. CNS lesions developed despite stable systemic control, so pulsatile icotinib(1125 mg every 3 d) was administered. This new strategy for administration has lasted 25 mo so far, and resulted in complete remission of neurological symptoms, almost vanished lesions, and longer survival with no notable side *** This is the first successful example of pulsatile icotinib for treating isolated CNS progression from EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC, providing a new alternative for the local treatment of CNS metastases.

Postoperative pain assessment and management among nurses in selected hospitals in Benin City,Edo State,Nigeria

Objective:This study was designed to determine the nurse assessment of postoperative pain and its management in selected hospitals,Benin City,Edo State,*** and Methods:A descriptive cross-sectional survey was *** target population consist of 222 purposely nurses who are in the cadre of nursing officer II to chief nursing officer who works in the various surgical wards/units of the selected health *** data were collected from the participants using the pretested structured questionnaire developed by the ***:Results showed that 66.2%of nurses had a poor level of knowledge on postoperative pain *** McGill Pain Questionnaire was the most used pain assessment tool with a mean score of 2.84 whereas the Dallas Pain Questionnaire was the least used with a mean score of 1.90.“Providing clean,calm,and well-ventilated ward environment”(3.69±0.61)was the most used nonpharmacological method for postoperative pain management,followed by“distraction,relaxation,and guided imagery”(3.52±0.50),“dressing,bandage,splint,and reinforce wound sites postoperatively”(3.39±0.54),and“early ambulation/exercise”(3.20±0.62).The most used pharmacological interventions were“acetaminophen”(3.63±0.55),“topical anesthetic”(2.92±0.62),“nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs”(2.87±0.43),and“mixed opioid agonist-antagonist”(2.56±0.56).Conclusion:There is a poor level of knowledge on postoperative pain assessment among nurses in this study *** is,therefore,pertinent for hospitals to organize continuous in-service training for postoperative pain assessment and management,especially on nonpharmacological approaches among nurses.

Metabolic syndrome and its association with components of sarcopenia in older community-dwelling Chinese

Aging and obesity contribute to muscle dysfunction. This study aimed to determine the cross-sectional associations between components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and sarcopenia in 251 older community- dwelling Chinese. The total fat-free mass was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, muscle strength (handgrip strength) by a handheld dynamometer, physical performance by 4-meter walk, 5-time chair stand test, and the short physical performance battery (SPPB). MetS was defined using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. The participants with MetS had a higher appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and relative ASM (RASM). The males with MetS had higher handgrip strength, and the females with MetS had higher SPPB scores. After adjusting for age and body mass index, the participants with an increased waist circumference had a higher ASM, and those with increased diastolic blood pressure (DBP) also had higher handgrip strength. The males with elevated fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels had a lower gait speed. Components of MetS, such as DPB and FBG, were associated with muscle strength and physical performance in older adults. These results suggest that muscle strength and function should be considered in treating older adults with MetS.

Liver cancer represents a grave hepatic condition and constitutes a significant global health *** resection remains the principal therapeutic modality for liver ***,perioperative malnutrition exerts a notable impact on patients with liver cancer,emerging as an independent risk factor for disease mortality and adverse ***,precise nutritional diagnosis and timely nutritional support hold the potential to enhance therapeutic efficacy and quality of life for liver cancer *** study represents a meticulous foray into the literature,extracting data from PubMed,Web of Science,and EMBASE databases,with a focus on the past 5 *** scrutinizes the impact of malnutrition on patients undergoing liver cancer surgery,the etiological underpinnings of malnutrition within this patient cohort,the critical assessment of perioperative nutritional status,and the strategic approaches to nutritional *** rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria,the amassed scholarly works are meticulously synthesized,methodically organized,and categorically elaborated ***,the authors propose the incorporation of a multidisciplinary nutrition management team during the perioperative period,comprising nutritionists,pharmacists,physicians,nurses,psychologists,and rehabilitation therapists,among other specialized ***,they collaborate to devise and implement personalized nutritional support plans,monitor patients’nutritional status,and make necessary adjustments as *** comprehensive management and intervention,improvements in the nutritional status of liver cancer patients can be achieved,thereby enhancing surgical success rates and facilitating postoperative *** is believed that this manuscript will offer valuable insights to advance the nutritional management during the perioperative phase of liver cancer,aiding in ameliorating patients'nutritional status and treatment outcomes.

Two cases of neuroleptic malignant syndrome in elderly patients taking atypical antipsychotics

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare, life-threatening adverse reaction to antipsychotic medication that typically includes high-fever, extrapyramidal symptoms, autonomic nervous system dysfunction and disturbances in consciousness. Though reported to be more common following use of the older, first generation antipsychotic medications, it can also occur in patients taking the newer, second generation antipsychotic medications. This report discusses the clinical presentation, possible etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of two cases of NMS that occurred in elderly patients after taking atypical antipsychotics. With the increasing use of atypical antipsychotic medication in elderly patients - who may be more susceptible to this adverse reaction - there is a need to increase clinical vigilance about this condition, particularly among internists and gerontologists who may be unfamiliar with this rare complication to antipsychotic medication.

AIM: To explore the phenotype and genotype of WeillMarchesani syndrome(WMS) in a Chinese family and review related ***: Three WMS patients and other unaffected individuals in this family with a history of consanguineous marriage were included in this study. Medical history, comprehensive ophthalmic examinations, and systemic evaluation, as well as whole exome and Sanger sequencing of specific genomic regions, were performed. RESULTS: The three affected siblings presented with short stature, brachydactyly and ocular disorders, including very shallow anterior chamber, high myopia, microspherophakia lens subluxation with stretched zonules and glaucoma. Genetic analysis verified a homozygous missense mutation(c.2983C>T: p. Arg995Trp) in ADAMTS17,which was correlated with the diseases in this family, indicating an autosomal recessive inherited manner of WMS. This review aims to summarize the mutation sites of WMS genes, so as to prevent the disease and better guide clinical diagnosis and ***: A novel homozygous missense variant of ADAMTS17 is identified in a WMS family with a history of consanguineous marriage. Our study expands the range of mutations associated with WMS and deepens our understanding of pathology in disease associated with ADAMTS17 variants.
