Envisioning future deep learning theories: some basic concepts and characteristics

To advance deep learning methodologies in the next decade, a theoretical framework for reasoning about modern neural networks is needed. While efforts are increasing toward demystifying why deep learning is so effective, a comprehensive picture remains lacking, suggesting that a better theory is possible. We argue that a future deep learning theory should inherit three characteristics: a hierarchically structured network architecture, parameters iteratively optimized using stochastic gradient-based methods, and information from the data that evolves compressively. As an instantiation, we integrate these characteristics into a graphical model called neurashed. This model effectively explains some common empirical patterns in deep learning. In particular, neurashed enables insights into implicit regularization, information bottleneck, and local ***, we discuss how neurashed can guide the development of deep learning theories.

With the rapid urbanization of Chinese cities,access to jobs and amenities is becoming increasingly valued in household＇s choice of residential *** this paper,we estimate the implicit value of access to jobs and amenities in Beijing using the hedonic pricing *** spatial distributions of jobs and amenities in the Beijing Metropolitan Area are quite centralized,supporting the traditional monocentric model in the urban economics *** indices are developed to measure the accessibilities to jobs and amenities of 129 Jiedaos（residential zones）.We then employ the hedonic pricing equations to estimate the capitalization effects of these accessibility indices in the prices of new residential *** empirical results show that the accessibility indices are important determinants of residential property prices in Beijing,which means that urban residents have a willingness to pay for access to high quality amenities.

China's Construction Land Expansion and Economic Growth:A Capital-output Ratio Based Analysis

Since 2003, the Chinese Government has included land policy as an important component of macroeconomic policy. The present paper analyzes the impact of the expansion of construction land on economic growth in terms of the capital-output ratio. Using provincial panel data for China from 1999to 2005, we conclude that the excess expansion of China＇s construction land led to an increase in the capital-output ratio. Therefore, expanding construction land has made little contribution to economic growth. This paper argues that contractionary land policy does not deter high economic growth, and is a necessary condition for sustainable economic growth.

When I was growing up in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s,the country was full of optimism about the future. We were building a magnificent infrastructure of roads,airports,railroads and seaports that would link each part of the country for commerce and tourism. We all believed in President John *** when he challenged the country to land a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. The first jumbo jet,the Boeing 747,was a product of this belief in the future. We even believed that nuclear power would change the way we powered America. There was a widespread assumption that the nation would become wealthy and prosper,propelled by both technology and diligence. There were many reasons for this mood and these achievements,but I believe that nothing was more important than the great leaders who had the vision and communicated these ideas to the American people.

The "Biofilms, Microbiomes and Oral Diseases: Challenges and Future Perspectives" symposium jointly organized by Penn Dental Medicine and West China school of Stomatology was held on 30 September 2017 at Penn wharton China Center(PWCC) in Beijing,China. The topics included the pathogenicity of oral biofilms, novel strategies for the control of biofilm-related diseases, oral microbiome and single-cell approaches, and the link between oral diseases and overall health. Researchers from a number of disciplines, representing institutions from China and Penn Dental Medicine, gathered to discuss advances in our understanding of biofilms, as well as future directions for the control of biofilm-related oral and systemic diseases.

Seeding cells and scaffolds play pivotal roles in bone tissue engineering and regenerative ***’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells(WJCs)from human umbilical cord represent attractive and promising seeding cells in tissue regeneration and engineering for treatment *** study was carried out to explore the biocompatibility of scaffolds to seeding cells in ***-like nano-hydroxyapatite(RN-HA)and flake-like micro-hydroxyapatite(FM-HA)coatings were prepared on Mg-Zn-Ca alloy substrates using micro-arc oxidation and electrochemical *** were utilized to investigate the cellular biocompatibility of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys after different surface modifications by observing the cell adhesion,morphology,proliferation,and osteoblastic *** in vitro results indicated that the RN-HA coating group was more suitable for cell proliferation and cell osteoblastic differentiation than the FM-HA group,demonstrating better *** results suggested that the RN-HA coating on Mg-Zn-Ca alloy substrates might be of great potential in bone tissue engineering.
