Skygardens or skycourts are a unique architectural intervention in the built environment,enhancing the social,economic,and environmental values of the building.It allows occupants to connect and experience outdoor freshness within a semi-enclosed environment.However,skygardens located on a highrise building may generate intense wind gusts,endangering the safety of occupants.Using a validated computational fluid dynamics model,this study investigates the potential of various vegetative barriers or shelterbelts in attenuating the high wind speeds encountered in such spaces and the impact on wind and thermal comfort.Three skygarden configurations were investigated with and without vegetative barriers,simplified and modelled as porous zones,and their effect was studied on the velocity and temperature profile at the occupants’level.The results indicate that while hedges and trees can offer resistance to airflow,trees provide higher temperature reduction.However,a combination of vegetative and geometrical barriers provides the most optimal condition in the skygarden.The study has identified the importance of assessing wind attenuation characteristics of tree plantations on highrise skygarden,and the results can be used in designing intervention strategies.Moreover,vegetation can attenuate pollutants and mitigate poor air quality by surface deposition,and future studies should investigate in that direction.

Nutrient enrichment has been identified as the major cause of university of nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) Lake’s water quality degradation. This study critically examines the nature, source and delivery of nutrients into the lake and observes that uncontrolled anthropogenic activities along the catchment area are the major sources. The chemical analyses of the water samples drawn from different sampling points were carried out in the laboratory and the total phosphorus readings were in the range of 20 to 55.7 μg/L with the inflow 1 recording the highest level. The chlorophyll a concentrations in the lake water were between 39 to 65 μg/L which exceeded Malaysian water quality standard. However, the silicate and nitrate levels were found to be in lower concentrations. Dissolved oxygen and pH readings obtained through in situ measurements in the lake water showed that there was oxygen depletion in the water during the night while it increased during the day, also the lake was acidic in the night and became alkaline in the day. All the findings were integrated to draw realistic restoration goals for the lake.

The Effect of Laser Ablation Pulse Width and Feed Speed on Necrosis and Surface Damage of Cortical Bone

Bone cutting is of importance in orthopaedic surgery but is also challenging due to its nature of brittleness—where severe mechanical and thermal damages can be introduced easily in conventional machining.Laser machining is a new technology that can allow for complex cut geometries whilst minimising surface defects i.e.,smearing,which occur in mechanical methods.However,comparative studies on the influence of lasers with different pulse characteristics on necrotic damage and surface integrity have not been reported yet.This paper for the first time investigates the effects of laser type on the necrotic damage and surface integrity in fresh bovine cortical bone after ex-situ laser machining.Three lasers of different pulse widths,i.e.,picosecond,nanosecond and continuous wave lasers have been investigated with different feed speeds tested to study the machining efficiency.The cutting temperature,and geometrical outputs have been measured to investigate the thermal influence on the cooling behaviour of the bone samples while high-speed imaging was used to compare the material removal mechanisms between a pulsed and continuous wave laser.Furthermore,an in-depth histological analysis of the subsurface has revealed that the nanosecond laser caused the largest necrotic depth,owing to the high pulse frequency limiting the dissipation of heat.It has also been observed that surface cracks positioned perpendicular to the trench direction were produced after machining by the picosecond laser,indicative of the photomechanical effect induced by plasma explosions.Therefore,the choice of laser type(i.e.,in terms of its pulse width and frequency)needs to be critically considered for appropriate application during laser osteotomy with minimum damage and improved healing.

Endoscopic resection(ER)of colorectal polyps has become a daily practice in most endoscopic units providing a colorectal cancer screening program and requires the availability of local experts and high-end endoscopic devices.ER procedures have evolved over the past few years from endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR)to more advanced techniques,such as endoscopic submucosal dissection and endo-scopic full-thickness resection.Complete resection and disease eradication are the ultimate goals of ER-based techniques,and novel devices have been developed to achieve these goals.The EndoRotor®Endoscopic Powered Resection System(Interscope Medical,Inc.,Northbridge,Massachusetts,United States)is one such device.The EndoRotor is a powered resection tool for the removal of alimentary tract mucosa,including post-EMR persistent lesions with scarring,and has both CE Mark and FDA clearance.This review covers available published evidence documenting the usefulness of EndoRotor for the management of recurrent colorectal polyps.

The presence or absence of occupants in a building has a direct effect on its energy use,as it influences the operation of various building energy systems.Buildings with high occupancy variability,such as universities,where fluctuations occur throughout the day and across the year,can pose challenges in developing control strategies that aim to balance comfort and energy efficiency.This situation becomes even more complex when such buildings are integrated with renewable energy technologies,due to the inherently intermittent nature of these energy source.To promote widespread integration of renewable energy sources in such buildings,the adoption of advanced control strategies such as model predictive control(MPC)is imperative.However,the variable nature of occupancy patterns must be considered in its design.In response to this,the present study evaluates a price responsive MPC strategy for a solar thermal heating system integrated with thermal energy storage(TES)for buildings with high occupancy variability.The coupled system supplies the building heating through a low temperature underfloor heating system.A case study university building in nottingham,UK was employed for evaluating the feasibility of the proposed heating system controlled by MPC strategy.The MPC controller aims to optimize the solar heating system’s operation by dynamically adjusting to forecasted weather,occupancy,and solar availability,balancing indoor comfort with energy efficiency.By effectively integrating with thermal energy storage,it maximizes solar energy utilization,reducing reliance on non-renewable sources and ultimately lowering energy costs.The developed model has undergone verification and validation process,utilizing both numerical simulations and experimental data.The result shows that the solar hot water system provided 63%heating energy in total for the case study classroom and saved more than half of the electricity cost compared with that of the original building heating system.The electricity cost saving has been confirmed

Background Antiplatelet agents reduce recurrence after cerebral ischaemia but are not effective in all patients,in part because of treatment resistance.The primary aim was to assess the proportion of patients who are insensitive to clopidogrel.The secondary aim was to assess the association between insensitivity to clopidogrel and recurrent cerebrovascular events.Methods Following written informed consent,independent patients with a recent non-cardioembolic ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack,and taking clopidogrel,were enrolled.Platelet function was assessed with remote measurement of surface expression of P-selectin(CD62P)using commercial kits sensitive to aspirin or clopidogrel.Participants’general practitioners provided details on recurrent vascular events at least 90 days later.Data are mean(SD)and median[IQR].Resistance was defined as:aspirin median fluorescence(MF)>500 units,clopidogrel MF>860 units.Non-parametric descriptors and tests were used.Results 63 patients were recruited:mean age 64(13.7)years,women 47%.At baseline,59(95%)patients were taking clopidogrel alone with 3(5%)on combined clopidogrel and aspirin.Assessment of platelet surface P-selectin revealed:aspirin test 528[317,834],>50054.8%;clopidogrel test 429[303,656],>86011.3%.No participants on aspirin and clopidogrel showed aspirin resistance.Thirteen(20.6%)patients had a recurrent cerebrovascular event;those with an ischaemic stroke had a non-significantly higher baseline P-selectin using the clopidogrel test as compared with those with no recurrence:626[380,801]versus 406[265,609],p=0.08.Conclusions Remote measurement of platelet function assessed using the platelet surface expression of P-selectin is feasible.11%of patients taking clopidogrel showed resistance.No significant associations were noted between clopidogrel resistance and recurrent ischaemic events.

In recent years,a significant number of investigations have discovered up to 200000 unsubmitted sexual assault kits(SAKs)in the US.While the public outcry was largely directed towards DNA analysis,the SAKs also contained biological specimens specifically designated for toxicological analysis.Due to the sensitivity of analytes in potential drug facilitated sexual assaults,the preservation and maintenance of the specimens is crucial in providing accurate toxicological measurements.The investigations into the unsubmitted SAKs have identified subjective law enforcement officer(LEO)rationale for the unsubmitted kits,however the impact on toxicological specimens has not been examined.This brief review of policies and guidelines with respect to forensic specimens has identified potential sources of evidentiary degradation,despite the use of chemical preservatives.With respect to temperature-controlled environments,the variation in SAK submission policies established throughout the US are potentially detrimental to the preservation of toxicological evidence.Degradation as a result of time-delayed collection and poorly maintained storage temperatures plays a crucial role for/in the interpretation of qualitative and quantitative toxicological results.This review finds these delays can be addressed through modernisation of facilities;electronic tracking of unsubmitted SAKs;mandated transfer of biological evidence within 72 h;and documentation of temperature within the chain of custody or other records.Without identifying the range of temperatures in which the evidence was exposed,forensic toxicologists may unintentionally provide erroneous interpretations of toxicological analyses-potentially casting doubt on the survivor’s recall of events and negatively impacting future sexual assault investigations.

Generating prototypical residential building geometry models using a new hybrid approach

Building prototyping has regularly been used in building performance analyses with statistically feasible models.The novelty of this research involves a new hybrid approach combining stratified sampling and k-means clustering to establish building geometry prototypes.The research focuses on residential buildings in Ningbo,China.Seventeen small residential districts(SRDs)containing 367 residential buildings were systemically selected for survey and data collection.The stratified sampling used building construction year as the main parameter to generate stratification.Floor numbers,shape coefficients,floor areas,and window-to-wall ratios were used as the four observations for k-means clustering.Based on this new approach,nine building geometry prototypes were identified and modelled.These statistically representative prototypes provide building geometrical information and characteristic-based evaluations for subsequent building performance analysis.

The amino-terminal residue of a protein(or amino-terminus of a peptide following protease cleavage)can be an important determinant of its stability,through the Ubiquitin Proteasome System associated N-degron pathways.Plants contain a unique combination of N-degron pathways(previously called the N-end rule pathways)E3 ligases,PROTEOLYSIS(PRT)6 and PRT1,recognizing non-overlapping sets of amino-terminal residues,and others remain to be identified.Although only very few substrates of PRT1 or PRT6 have been identified,substrates of the oxygen and nitric oxide sensing branch of the PRT6 N-degron pathway include key nuclear-located transcription factors(ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR VIIs and LITTLE ZIPPER 2)and the histone-modifying Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 component VERNALIZATION 2.In response to reduced oxygen or nitric oxide levels(and other mechanisms that reduce pathway activity)these stabilized substrates regulate diverse aspects of growth and development,including response to flooding,salinity,vernalization(cold-induced flowering)and shoot apical meristem function.The N-degron pathways show great promise for use in the improvement of crop performance and for biotechnological applications.Upstream proteases,components of the different pathways and associated substrates still remain to be identified and characterized to fully appreciate how regulation of protein stability through the amino-terminal residue impacts plant biology.
