Aim:To describe the current practise of living donor liver transplantation(LDLT)for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),including the patient selection criteria,surgical techniques,management of small-for-size syndrome,postoperative complications,and the results of our units,in the Liver Transplant Centre of Queen Mary Hospital,hong kong,one of the high-volume centres for LDLT in Asia.Methods:Our centre practises careful selection for HCC patients using the university of California,San Francisco(UCSF)criteria,supplemented by alpha-fetoprotein level and the model for end-stage liver disease score.Slight flexibility is offered to enthusiastic donors and recipients in LDLT while balancing the risks and benefits.We pioneered in using the extended right lobe graft and the novel hepatic venoplasty technique,which lessen the risk of hyperperfusion and small-for-size syndrome with improved overall recipient survival.Data were collected prospectively and presented as the mean values and ranges,or the number of patients in proportion of total patient population.Results:Of our patients,74.9% met the UCSF criteria,and 64.5% met the Milan criteria.A 5-year overall and disease-free survival rate of 78.9% and 76.3% were achieved.Conclusion:LDLT is an ideal treatment for HCC in hong kong with regard to the critical organ shortage and high demand for transplantation.The current surgical techniques and post-transplant surveillance contribute to the positive outcome.

Purpose:This research is an interview-based study that captures the academics’perspectives toward the planning and design of an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum for undergraduate students in the Chinese context,using the Common Core Curriculum at the university of hong kong as a case study.Design/Approach/Methods:A total of 28 academics with various levels of academic ranking,disciplinary context,proven teaching excellence,and research productivities were individually invited for and consented to a semi-structured and face-to-face interview.Findings:This article suggests four fundamental and interrelated dimensions for consideration when structuring an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum,namely,how to design,what is worth learning,how to learn and teach,and how to know students have learned.It is suggested that the ideal curriculum should remain coherent and coordinated,broad and balanced,as well as open and flexible,ensuring the capture of knowledge,skills,and attitudes,with the facilitation of active,authentic,and contextualized pedagogies and assessments.Originality/Value:This article has the potential of providing insight for policymakers and educators around the world to better structure an interdisciplinary General Education Curriculum by creating an overall springboard for future discussion.They can also integrate these evidence-based elements and strategies into their everyday practices.

This is the author’s second consecutive year of doing the research.As the economy of China is booming,there is a rapid increase in the number of foreign students coming to the university of hong kong to learn Chinese.As Chinese is one of the popular subjects for them to choose,in 2019,there are around 1000 foreign students(undergraduates or exchange students)learning Chinese as a foreign language course.A language teacher is a facilitator and an instructor of Chinese learning for foreign students.However,in the real world,there are always some good language learners and some less talented language learners in one classroom.So,what is the secret of the good Chinese learners?What can the language instructors do in order to support good Chinese learners and help the less talented learners to learn Chinese?In the TESOL field,there are a lot of researches have been done by scholars.In the early 1970s,several researchers isolated and defined the concept of good language learner.But in teaching Chinese as a foreign language field,there are relatively fewer researches.So,from January 2017 to May 2019,I conducted a survey about good Chinese learners in CHIN9503 and CHIN9504 classes.The survey consisted of an interview with several questions and the author will discuss the result of a survey and its implications in this paper.This research is done in a macro way rather than micro way.Thus,this holistic research focuses on finding good Chinese learners rather than focusing on learners’individual differences.

目的:本研究的目的是在中国大陆和中国香港的大学生人群中,进一步检验中译版《锻炼行为调节问卷-2》(C-BREQ-2)的相关心理测量学属性。方法:来自中国大陆(n=191)和中国香港(n=194)的大学生参加了本次研究,检验了C-BREQ-2的因素效度、区别效度、法则效度、内部一致性信度以及测量恒等性。结果:验证性因素分析结果为18条目C-BREQ-2的5因素结构提供了支持。因素间相关程度的95%置信区间检验表明,C-BREQ-2各因素间虽具有相关性但属不同概念,这为区分效度提供了支持。C-BREQ-2的内部一致性信度达到可接受水平。不同行为调节因素间相关系数呈简单相关模式,为C-BREQ-2的法则效度提供了支持。不同行为调节变量与情感及行为变量间的相关结果符合理论假设,进一步对其法则效度提供了支持。多组验证性因素分析结果表明,在中国大陆和中国香港大学生中,C-BREQ-2测量模型的因子载荷和因子方差/协方差具有跨人群恒等性。结论:本研究为在中国大学生人群使用C-BREQ-2进一步提供了心理测量学证据,也使得以自我决定理论为基础的相关动机理论在中国人人群以及在锻炼和体力活动等领域的进一步研究与应用成为可能。

Nanoimprint-induced strain engineering of two-dimensional materials

The high stretchability of two-dimensional(2D)materials has facilitated the possibility of using external strain to manipulate their properties.Hence,strain engineering has emerged as a promising technique for tailoring the performance of 2D materials by controlling the applied elastic strain field.Although various types of strain engineering methods have been proposed,deterministic and controllable generation of the strain in 2D materials remains a challenging task.Here,we report a nanoimprint-induced strain engineering(NISE)strategy for introducing controllable periodic strain profiles on 2D materials.A three-dimensional(3D)tunable strain is generated in a molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))sheet by pressing and conforming to the topography of an imprint mold.Different strain profiles generated in MoS_(2)are demonstrated and verified by Raman and photoluminescence(PL)spectroscopy.The strain modulation capability of NISE is investigated by changing the imprint pressure and the patterns of the imprint molds,which enables precise control of the strain magnitudes and distributions in MoS_(2).Furthermore,a finite element model is developed to simulate the NISE process and reveal the straining behavior of MoS_(2).This deterministic and effective strain engineering technique can be easily extended to other materials and is also compatible with common semiconductor fabrication processes;therefore,it provides prospects for advances in broad nanoelectronic and optoelectronic devices.

Since the 19th century,Chinese societies,as latecomers to modernization,have prioritized Western learning.Modelled on European and North American experiences,modern universities were created to serve this purpose.Having little linkage to their indigenous cultural traditions,they operate in Confucian socio-cultural contexts,with constant and longstanding struggles with their cultural identity.In recent decades,these societies have progressed remarkably well in higher education.Their experience could be seen as a cultural experiment that is placed highly on their sustainable development agendas.The products of their modern education systems especially at the elite level have demonstrated a grasp of both traditional and Western knowledge,with their very best universities well positioned to combine Chinese and Western ideas of a university in everyday operation.Such a bi-cultural condition contrasts sharply to the still largely mono-cultural(Western only)university operating environment in the West.The integration opens further space for their universities to explore an alternative to the Western academic model that has long dominated world higher education.Based on fieldwork at premier universities in Beijing,hong kong,Singapore,and Taipei,this article calls for a reconceptualized view of modern university development in Chinese societies.It argues that the experiment enables their top universities to bring back their cultural traditions to integrate with Western values and contribute to inter-civilizational dialogue.

Characterization of a smog chamber for studying formation of gas-phase products and secondary organic aerosol

Smog chambers provide a potent approach to explore the secondary organic aerosol formation under varied conditions.This study describes the construction and characterization of a new smog chamber facility for studying the formation mechanisms of gas-phase products and secondary organic aerosol from the photooxidation of volatile organic compounds.The chamber is a 5.4 m^(3) Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene(FEP)Teflon reactor with the potential to perform photooxidation experiments at controlled temperature and relative humidity.Detailed characterizations were conducted for evaluation of stability of environmental parameters,mixing time,background contamination,light intensity,and wall losses of gases and particles.The photolysis rate of NO_(2)(J_(NO2))ranged from(1.02-3.32)×10^(-3)sec^(-1),comparable to the average J_(NO2)in ambient environment.The wall loss rates for NO,NO_(2),and O_(3)were 0.47×10^(-4),0.37×10^(-4),and 1.17×10^(-4)min^(-1),while wall loss of toluene was obsoletely found in a 6 hr test.The particle number wall loss rates are(0.01-2.46)×10^(-3)min^(-1)for 40-350 nm with an average lifetime of more than one day.A series of toluene photooxidation experiments were carried out in absence of NO_xunder dry conditions.The results of the simulation experiments demonstrated that the chamber is well designed to simulate photolysis progress in the atmosphere.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants are notorious for their transmissibility,but little is known about their subgenomic RNA(sgRNA)expression.This study applied RNA-seq to delineate the quantitative and qualitative profiles of canonical sgRNA of 118 respiratory samples collected from patients infected with Omicron BA.2 and compared with 338 patients infected with non-variant of concern(non-VOC)-D614G.A unique characteristic profile depicted by the relative abundance of 9 canonical sgRNAs was reproduced by both BA.2 and non-VOCD614G regardless of host gender,age and presence of pneumonia.Remarkably,such profile was lost in samples with low viral load,suggesting a potential application of sgRNA pattern to indicate viral activity of individual patient at a specific time point.A characteristic qualitative profile of canonical sgRNAs was also reproduced by both BA.2 and non-VOC-D614G.The presence of a full set of canonical sgRNAs carried a coherent correlation with crude viral load(AUC¼0.91,95%CI 0.88–0.94),and sgRNA ORF7b was identified to be the best surrogate marker allowing feasible routine application in characterizing the infection status of individual patient.Further potentials in using sgRNA as a target for vaccine and antiviral development are worth pursuing.
