Groundwater is the main water supply source in the Tarim Basin in *** disease caused by high iodine(I)groundwater in the Tarim Basin was reported ***,it is crucial to systematically identify the distribution and genesis of groundwater *** on hydrochemical analysis of 717 groundwater samples collected in 2015–2018,spatial distribution and hydrogeochemistry characteristic of high I groundwater in different aquifers were *** showed that groundwater I ranged between100.00μg/L)accounted for 7.25%of the total ***,groundwater I significantly increased from recharge zone(RZ)to transition zone(TZ)and to evaporation zone(EZ).Vertically,groundwater in shallow confined aquifer(SCA)had the greatest I concentration,followed by single-structure phreatic aquifer(SSPA),phreatic aquifer in confined groundwater area(PACGA),while groundwater in deep confined aquifer(DCA)generally had low I *** I enrichment in SSPA was mainly affected by organic matter(OM)decomposition and that in SCA was mainly affected by evaporite mineral dissolution,OM decomposition under alkaline *** I enrichment in groundwater of PACGA was restrained under neutral *** sedimentary environment was crucial for I enrichment in ***,fine-grained lithology of aquifer,smooth topographic slope,shallow buried depth of groundwater,weak alkaline and reducing environment,reductive dissolution of iron oxide/hydroxide minerals and OM decomposition were advantageous to I enrichment in groundwater.

The Knowledge Economic City (KEC) of Al Madinah Al Munawwarah is one of the major projects and represents the cornerstone for the new development activities for Al Madinah. The study area contains different geological units dominated by basalt and overlain by surface deposits. The surface soils vary in thickness and can be classified into well-graded SAND with silt and gravel (SW-SM), silty SAND with gravel (SM), silty GRAVEL with sand (GM), and sandy SILTY clay (CL-ML). The subsurface soil obtained from the drilled boreholes can be classified into poorly graded GRAVEL (GP), well-graded GRAVEL with sand (GW), poorly graded GRAVEL with silt (GP-GM), silty CLAYEY gravel with sand (GC-GM), silty SAND with gravel (SM), silt with SAND (ML), and silty CLAY with sand (CL-ML), sandy lean CLAY (CL), and lean CLAY (CL). The relative density of the deposit and the different gravel sizes intercalated with the soil influenced the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) values. The SPT N values are high and approach refusal even at shallow depths. The shallow refusal depth (0.10 to 0.90 m) of the Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT) was observed. Generally, the soil can be described as inactive with low plasticity and dense to very dense consistency. The basalt of the KEC site is characterized by slightly (W2) to highly (W4) weathering, their strength ranges from moderate (S4) to very strong (S2), and the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) ranges from very poor (R5) to excellent (R1). The engineering geological map of the KEC characterized the geoengineering properties of the soil and rock materials and classified them into many zones. The high sulphate (SO42−) and chloride (Cl−) contents in groundwater call for protective measures for foundation concrete. The current study revealed that geohazard(s) mitigation measures concerning floods, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes should be considered.

Shoreline Change Modeling on Emergency Beach Nourishment Project on West Beach of Beidaihe,China

By use of a shorehne-change numerical model （GENESIS） based on one-line theory, a preliminary modeling study on shoreline changes caused by a beach nourishment project in Beidaihe, China, is presented in this paper. Firstly, the GENESIS model is verified and model sensitivity to the major parameter changes is discussed by simulating a hydraulic model test. The beach nourishment project, after that the shoreline change is kept being monitored, is a small-scale emergency one carried out to use two bathing places on the west beach in the summer, 2008. In this paper the shoreline changes caused by the beach nourishment project are modeled by the GENESIS model, and the computed results fit well with the measured shorelines. With the same model and parameters, a long-term performance of the project is predicted, and the result shows that the bathing places only can be suitable for bathing in 2 to 3 years without subsequence nourishment project. Therefore, it is proposed to nourish the beaches in time to keep the service life of the beach in recent years and carry out the beach nourishment project for the whole west beach as soon as possible.

Characterization of biochars produced from seven biomasses grown in three different climate zones

The characterization of biochars produced from seven feedstocks(four crop straws: cotton stalks, wheat stalks, rape stalks and corn stalks; three hardwoods: Salix babylonica Linn, Platanus orientalis and Robinia pseudoacacia) grown in three different climate zones(arid,semiarid and humid regions) were investigated for their potential as soil amendments. The results show that ash content, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, CEC, Cl-, p H, and salinity are generally higher in the straw biochars(STR-BCs) than the hardwood biochars(HW-BCs). However, there is no significant distinction between the two categories of biochars in terms of surface acidity, surface basicity, TC, available phosphorus(A-P) or NH4+-N. The contents of K+, Na+,Ca2+, Mg2+, EC, Cl-of all 21 biochars increase in semiarid and arid regions in comparison to humid regions, while ash content, TC, CEC, p H, surface acidity, surface basicity,A-P and NH4+-N show no correlation to the climate. From the perspective of K+, CEC and the remediation of acidified soils, STR-BCs are preferable over HW-BCs as a soil amendment, while HW-BCs are more suitable than STRBCs in soils with a saline problem. EC, Na+and Clincrease with the water stress of the climatic regions, and the high saline ions of biochar in the arid regions indicate that biochars produced from local biomass, especially from crop residues, are at a high risk of exacerbating soil salinization. The big difference in the critical chemical properties, such as the saline ions, stresses that biochar should be taken on a regional basis as well as a biomass basis, with the general assumption that whether biochar as a soil amendment is good or bad is groundless.

In the recent decade, the construction projects related to shallow geothermal energy engineering have undergone rapid development in Shandong Province. The predominant type of these developments and applications was heat exchange through buried tubes and the main targets were residential and office buildings. However, an overwhelming majority of the completed geothermal heat pump projects lacked monitoring devices so that they were unable to comprehensively reflect the background values for the geothermal fields within the province and few researches were conducted on their influence on the geological environment. In this paper, locations for monitoring shallow geothermal energy and their validity of the monitoring point deployment were studied in view of the development and application status as well as geological background conditions of various projects located in multiple cities providing data support for analyzing the fluctuation trend and influence of large-scale shallow geothermal energy applications on the shallow geothermal and the feasibility and parameter designs of newly built systems in Shandong Province in the future.

Objective The Huashi Village in Xinglong County of Hebei Province is located in the Yanshan subsidence zone in the central eastern North China Plate, which is 137 km away from Beijing City （Fig. la）. This area has undergone large -scale magmatic intrusion affected by the tectonic compression of the Pacific Plate in the Mesozoic （known as the Yanshanian movement） to form many alkaline rocks such as the Wulingshan rock mass. Previous studies have conducted petrological research and reconnaissance survey of rare metal ores in this area （Tian Shuzhang and Guo Zongshan, 1981; Xu Baoling et al., 1996）. In 2016, the Qinhuangdao Mineral and Hydrology engineering geological brigade of Hebei Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources Exploration implemented the project of Reconnaissance of Rare Metal Ores Including Rubidium in Huashi Village of Xinglong County, Hebei Province, and discovered super-large rare metal deposits of rubidium and biobium in the Madi alkali feldspar granite bodies in the Huashi Village to achieve great breakthrough of rare metal ore prospecting.

Numerical study of shoreline changes by emergency beach nourishment project at the Middle Beach of Beidaihe, China

Beach nourishment is a common coastal management strategy used to protect beach from erosion along the sandy coastlines. This method has been successfully applied to an emergency project at the West Beach of Beidaihe in the summer of 2008 and the full West Beach nourishment project in 2009-2010, which is the direct base of this study. Some basic information about the emergency engineering area at the Middle Beach is firstly described. The shoreline change of this area, including the analysis of beach width in five monitoring profiles in the bathing places of Middle Beach, is then discussed. After that a numerical modal based on one-line theory is established and the numerical results agree well with the measured shorelines, which indicates that the model is appropriate and is qualified to predict the shoreline change of the Middle Beach. With the same model and parameters, long-term performance of the project is predicted, and the result shows that without follow-up nourishment and project, the bathing places can remain suitable for bathing for about 10 a. It is suggested to nourish the beach in time and carry out the beach nourishment project for the full Middle Beach in Beidaihe.

Trace element composition of peridotites from the southern Mariana forearc:Insights into the geochemical effects of serpentinization and/or seafloor weathering

Peridotites from the southern Mariana forearc were sampled on the landward trench slope of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) subduction zone by *** mantle wedge peridotites underwent hydration by fluid derived from a dehydrated descending slab,and later interacted with seawater after emplacement at or near the *** study investigates how these two different rock-fluid interaction processes influenced trace element distribution in the southern Mariana forearc *** measured trace element concentrations of peridotites from the southern Mariana *** southern Mariana forearc peridotites are characterized by a distinct seawater-like REE pattern with an obvious negative Ce anomaly,and La shows good correlation with other REEs (except Ce).In addition,there is a great enrichment of U,Pb,Sr and Li elements,which show a distinct positive anomaly relative to adjacent elements in the multi-element *** the seawater-like REE pattern,we infer that REEs are mainly influenced by seawater during peridotite-seawater interactions after their emplacement at or near the seafloor,by serpentinization or by marine ***,the anomalous behavior of Ce,compared with other rare earth elements in these samples,may indicate that they have undergone reactions involving Ce (IV) when the peridotites interacted with *** U,Pb,Sr and Li anomalies are inferred to be related to seawater and/or fluids released during dehydration of the subducting slab.
