Revisiting the Mg isotopic systematics of siliciclastic components of sediments and sedimentary rocks:A new geochemical proxy of continental weathering in Earth's history

The Mg isotopic compositions of siliciclastic components(δ^(26)Mg_(sili))of sediments and sedimentary rocks have been commonly used to constrain the intensity of continental weathering,based on observations of,(1)an upward enrichment of26Mg in modern weathering profiles,(2)preferential uptake of26Mg in soil clays,and(3)general positive correlations between weathering intensities andδ^(26)Mg_(sili)values.However,not all weathering profiles display an upward increase ofδ^(26)Mg_(sili),and not all soil clays enrich in26Mg,complicating the interpretations ofδ^(26)Mg_(sili)data of sediments and sedimentary rocks.To further explore the controls ofδ^(26)Mg_(sili)of sediments and sedimentary rocks,here we measuredδ^(26)Mg_(sili),mineralogical compositions and major element compositions of deep sea sediments from South China Sea(SCS)and carbonate rock samples from two late Paleozoic sections in South China.carbonate samples show decreasing trends of both normalized Mg concentration(Mgnorm)andδ^(26)Mg_(sili)values with the increase of weathering intensity,while SCS sediments samples do not show any correlation between Mgnormorδ^(26)Mg_(sili)values and weathering intensity.A three-stages weathering model is developed to explain the observed Mgnorm andδ^(26)Mg_(sili)data.In the new model,weathering can be divided into three stages,(1)the preliminary weathering stage characterized by dissolution of primary minerals and formation of secondary clay minerals in saprolite,(2)the transitional stage with massive vermiculite and chlorite formation on the bottom of soil,and(3)the advanced stage showing dissolution of vermiculite and chlorite in the top of soil.The new model explains anδ^(26)Mg_(sili)increase and Mgnormdecrease with an increase weathering intensity in preliminary weathering stage and decrease of Mgnormandδ^(26)Mg_(sili)with increase weathering intensity in advanced weathering stage.The revised weathering model warrants the application of Mg isotope in the study of continental weathering in deep time.

A tectono-thermal perspective on the petroleum generation,accumulation and preservation in the southern Ordos Basin, North China

The southern Ordos Basin has excellent petroleum exploration prospects. However, the tectono-thermal history and the controls on petroleum generation, accumulation and preservation conditions in southern basin are unclear. In this study, we analyzed the present geothermal field, paleo-geothermal gradient,maturity of the hydrocarbon source rocks, uplift and cooling process and tectono-thermal evolution history. In the study area, for the Ordovician, Permain and the Triassic strata, the present temperature is low（30 70°C） in the southeastern area but high（80 140°C） in the northwestern area. The paleogeothermal gradient varied from 24°C/km to 30°C/km with a heat flow of 58—69 m W/m2（i.e., a medium-temperature basin）. The paleo-temperatures are higher than the present temperatures and the maximum paleo-temperatures controlled the thermal maturity of the source rocks. The vitrinite reflectance（Ro） values of the Triassic strata are >0.7% and the thermal maturity reached the middlemature oil generation stage. The Rovalues of the Permian-Ordovician strata are >1.8% and the thermal maturity reached the over-mature gas generation stage. The southern Ordos Basin has experienced the multiple tectonic events at the Late Ordovician Caledonian（452 Ma）, Late Triassic（215 Ma）, Late Jurassic（165 160 Ma）, End-Early Cretaceous（110 100 Ma） and Cenozoic（since 40 Ma）. A large-scale tectonothermal event occurred at the End-Early Cretaceous（110 100 Ma）, which was controlled by lithospheric extension, destruction and thinning. This event led to the highest paleo-temperatures and thermal maturities and coeval with the peak period of petroleum generation and accumulation. The southern Ordos Basin has undergone rapid and large-scale uplift since the Late Cretaceous due to expansion of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, uplift of the Qinling orogenic belt and thrust faulting in the Liupanshan tectonic belt. Theory and classification of mass extinction causation

Theory regarding the causation of mass extinctions is in need of systematization, which is the focus of this contribution. Every mass extinction has both an ultimate cause, i.e. the trigger that leads to various climato-environmental changes, and one or more proximate cause(s), i.e. the specific climato-environmental changes that result in elevated biotic mortality. With regard to ultimate causes, strong cases can be made that bolide(i.e. meteor) impacts, large igneous province(LIP) eruptions and bioevolutionary events have each triggered one or more of the Phanerozoic Big Five mass extinctions, and that tectono-oceanic changes have triggered some second-order extinction events. Apart from bolide impacts, other astronomical triggers(e.***.solar flares, gamma bursts and supernova explosions) remain entirely in the realm of speculation. With regard to proximate mechanisms, most extinctions are related to either carbon-release or carbon-burial processes, the former being associated with climatic warming, ocean acidification, reduced marine productivity and lower carbonate δ13C values, and the latter with climatic cooling, increased marine productivity and higher carbonate δ13C values. Environmental parameters such as marine redox conditions and terrestrial weathering intensity do not show consistent relationships with carbon-cycle changes.In this context, mass extinction causation can be usefully classified using a matrix of ultimate and proximate factors. Among the Big Five mass extinctions, the end-Cretaceous biocrisis is an example of a bolide-triggered carbon-release event, the end-Permian and end-Triassic biocrises are examples of LIP-triggered carbon-release events, and the Late Ordovician and Late Devonian biocrises are examples of bioevolution-triggered carbon-burial events. Whereas the bolide-impact and LIP-eruption mechanisms appear to invariably cause carbon release, bioevolutionary triggers can result in variable carbon-cycle changes, e.g. carbon burial during the Late Ordovician and Late Devonian events,

Revisiting the sodium-ion storage capability of hard carbon in carbonate-based electrolytes via a sodium-metal-free protocol

Common evaluation methodology of sodium(Na)-containing two-electrode or three-electrode configurations overlooks the interference from highly reactive Na metal,leading to the underestimation or inconsistent performance of low-potential hard carbon(HC)electrodes.Herein,the trap of Na metal was systematically investigated with or without applied current,uncovering its inadequacy as the reference or counter electrode in different configurations.A Na-metal-free three-electrode protocol is proposed for evaluating the actual Na^(+)-storage capability of the typical low-potential HC electrode.By avoiding Na crosstalk and precisely controlling the working electrode's potential,the actual electrochemical performance of HC in the carbonate esterbased electrolyte can be recognized with high capacity of 222 mAh g^(-1)at 2 C and 113 mAh g^(-1)at 5 C,correcting the misunderstanding of the inferior performance of HC in coin-type half cells(68%and 50%undervaluation at 2 C and 5 C,respectively).The advanced protocol is expected to reduce misunderstandings or underestimation due to evaluation methods and to guide the development of high-performance battery materials.

Rubidium(Rb)deposits mostly occur in the South China and Central Asia orogenic belts and are often closely associated with highly differentiated granites.This study investigates a newly-discovered giant Rb deposit at Gariatong in the Central Lhasa terrane in Tibet.Detailed field studies and logging data revealed that the Rb mineralization mainly occurs in monzogranite and is related to greisenization.LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircon yielded ages of 19.1±0.2 Ma and 19.0±0.2 Ma for greisenized monzogranite and fresh monzogranite,respectively.The monzogranites are characterized as strongly peraluminous,with high contents of SiO2,Al2O3,K2O and Na2O as well as a high differentiation index.They are enriched in light rare earth and large ion lithophile elements with significant negative Eu anomalies and depleted high fieldstrength elements.Petrological and geochemical features of these ore-related monzogranites suggest that they are highly fractionated S-type granites,derived from remelting of crustal materials in a post-collisional setting.The geochemistry of zircon and apatite points to a low oxygen fugacity of the ore-related monzogranite during the magma’s evolution.The discovery of the Gariatong Rb deposit suggests that the Central Lhasa terrane may be an important region for rare metal mineralization.

Primary and Secondary Calcite in Chinese Loess Distinguished by Crystallinity and Implications for Illuviation Depth and East Asian Summer Monsoon Intensity

The crystallinity has the potential to distinguish the primary and secondary calcite in Chinese loess， which then provides insights into illuviation depth and variations of the East Asian summer monsoon. However， this aspect has been rarely investigated. In this study， we defined the crystallinity of calcite as the Height/Area (H/A) ratio of the diffracted peak at crystal face (1 0 4). The H/A ratio inversely correlates with the average width of the diffracted peak， where a higher H/A ratio indicates higher crystallinity of calcite. Through the mixing and synthetic experiments， we found that the H/A ratio is minimally affected by factors such as calcite content， deposition temperature or rate but significantly influenced by the ionic impurity and the mixing proportion of different calcites. Subsequently， we examined desert samples of loess sources and loess carbonate nodules. Desert samples predominantly consist of primary calcite which inherits characteristics from cryptocrystalline limestone with high levels of ionic impurities resulting in low H/A ratio of 4.30 ± 0.51. In contrast， loess carbonate nodules contain abundant secondary calcite precipitated within soil interstices with low levels of ionic impurities leading to a significantly higher H/A ratio of 7.76 ± 0.82. Consequently， higher H/A ratios during interglacial periods compared to glacial periods are attributed to variations in relative proportions between primary and secondary calcite in loess sequences. The thickness， between the glacial-interglacial boundary and the depth where the H/A ratio starts to increase from the bottom to the top in the loess layer， can be used to indicate the illuviation depth of upper-soil carbonates and the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon. This proxy can be further applied in long-term loess sequences to uncover the summer monsoon evolution.

In 2022,The MOE key laboratory of Macromolecular Synthesis and Functionalization in Zhejiang University had achieved several important results.First,a series of well-defined dinuclear organoboron catalysts were developed to precisely control the enchainment of ether and carbonate segments during the copolymerization of CO_(2)and epoxides.Second,polyester had been synthesized through cationic copolymerization of cyclic anhydride.Third,ring-opening polymerization of carbon dioxide based valerolactone had been achieved,revealing the prospect of 3-ethylidene-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one(EVL)in utilizing CO_(2)and synthesizing functional polymers.Fourth,machine learning methods have been applied to biomaterial research,enabling high-throughput screening of functional biomaterial surfaces for implantable devices,and searching for potent antimicrobial peptides in whole combinatorial peptide libraries.Fifth,methods of characterization of biomacromolecule RNA transcription and manipulation of nucleoside modification were developed.Sixth,artificial enzymes-armed Bifidobacterium Longum probiotics were established to tune down gut inflammation.Seventh,three-dimensional(3D)printing technologies were used to engineer tough supramolecular hydrogels.Eighth,hydroplastic foaming graphene frameworks for acoustic and conductive polymer composites were provided for application.Ninth,aggregate photophysics about the nature of through-space interactions(TSIs)and manipulating their strength in small molecules with non-conjugated structure had been elucidated.Tenth,the forming mechanism of a newfound nested texture in poly(L-lactic acid)(PLLA)spherulitic films had been revealed.Finally,the isotropically dyeing mechanism of KDP single crystals grown from hydrogels have been explored.The related works are reviewed in this paper.

Sequestration of helium and xenon via iron-halide compounds in early Earth

The terrestrial abundance anomalies of helium and xenon suggest the presence of deep-Earth reservoirs of these elements,which has led to great interest in searching for materials that can host these usually unreactive elements.Here,using an advanced crystal structure search approach in conjunction with first-principles calculations,we show that several Xe/He-bearing iron halides are thermodynamically stable in a broad region of P–T phase space below 60 GPa.Our results present a compelling case for sequestration of He and Xe in the early Earth and may suggest their much wider distribution in the present Earth than previously believed.These findings offer insights into key material-based and physical mechanisms for elucidating major geological phenomena.

Actinobacterial community is a conspicuous part of aquatic ecosystems and displays an important role in the case of biogeochemical cycle,but little is known about the seasonal variation of actinobacterial community in reservoir ecological environment.In this study,the high-throughput techniques were used to investigate the structure of the aquatic actinobacterial community and its inducing water quality parameters in different seasons.The results showed that the highest diversity and abundance of actinobacterial community occurred in winter,with Sporichthya(45.42%)being the most abundant genus and Rhodococcus sp.(29.32%)being the most abundant species.Network analysis and correlation analysis suggested that in autumn the dynamics of actinobacterial community were infuenced by more factors and Nocardioides sp.SX2R5S2 was the potential keystone species which was negatively correlated with temperature(R=-0.72,Preservoirs and provide scientific guidance for further water quality management and protection in water sources.

Self-fueling ferroptosis-inducing microreactors based on p H-responsive Lipiodol Pickering emulsions enable transarterial ferro-embolization therapy

Lipiodol chemotherapeutic emulsions remain one of the main choices for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) via transarterial chemoembolization(TACE). However, the limited stability of Lipiodol chemotherapeutic emulsions would lead to rapid drug diffusion, which would reduce the therapeutic benefit and cause systemic toxicity of administrated chemotherapeutics. Therefore, the development of enhanced Lipiodol-based formulations is of great significance to enable effective and safe TACE treatment. Herein, a stable water-in-oil Lipiodol Pickering emulsion(LPE) stabilized by pH-dissociable calcium carbonate nanoparticles and hemin is prepared and utilized for efficient encapsulation of lipoxygenase(LOX). The obtained LOX-loaded CaCO3&hemin-stabilized LPE(LHCa-LPE) showing greatly improved emulsion stability could work as a pH-responsive and self-fueling microreactor to convert polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs), a main component of Lipiodol, to cytotoxic lipid radicals through the cascading catalytic reaction driven by LOX and hemin, thus inducing ferroptosis of cancer cells. As a result, such LHCa-LPE upon transcatheter embolization can effectively suppress the progression of orthotopic N1S1 HCC in rats. This study highlights a concise strategy to prepare pH-responsive and stable LPE-based self-fueling microreactors, which could serve as bifunctional embolic and ferroptosis-inducing agents to enable proof-of-concept transarterial ferro-embolization therapy of HCC.
