Spatial modelling of deforestation in romanian Carpathian Mountains using GIS and Logistic Regression

Deforestation process represents a wide concern mainly in the mountain environments due to its role in global warming, biodiversity loss, land degradation and natural hazards occurrence. Thus, the present study is focused on the largest afforested landform unit of Romania and, consequently, the most affected area by forest losses: Carpathian Mountains. The main goal of the paper is to examine and analyze the various explanatory variables associated with deforestation process and to model the probability of deforestation using GIS spatial analysis and logistic regression. The forest cover for 1990 and 2012, derived from CORINE Land Cover(CLC) database, were used to quantify historical forest cover change included in the modelling. To explain the biophysical and anthropogenic effects, this study considered several explanatory factors related to local topography, forest cover pattern, accessibility, urban growth and population density. Using ROC(Receiver Operating Characteristic) and 500 controlling sampling points, the statistical and spatial validations were assessed in order to evaluate the performance of the resulted data. The analysis showed that the area experienced a continuous forest cover change, leading to the loss of over 250,000 ha of forested area during the period 1990–2012. The most significant influence of the explanatory factors of deforestation were noticed in case of distance to forest edge(β=–4.215), forest fragmentation(β=2.231), slope declivity(β=–1.901), elevation(β=1.734) and distance to roads(β=–1.713). The statistical and spatial validation indicates a good accuracy of the model with reasonably AUC(0.736) and Kappa(0.739) values. The model's results suggest an intensification of the deforestation process in the area, designing numerous new clusters with high probability in the Apuseni Mountains, northern and central part of the Eastern Carpathians, western part of the Southern Carpathians and northern part of the Banat Mountains. It is an undisputable fact that the modernization process is intertwined with the new position acquired by individuals in the framework of societies and, indeed, whole humanity, during the Enlightenment period and the following three centuries. Change and an accentuated cinematic state of the world was at the very root of this new Modern Era in which knowledge and freedom were transformation’s twinned preconditions and outcomes. Enlightenment with its central core, that is to say education and a new paideia model together with liberation raised individuals into a condition which offered the opportunity to better themselves and their world. Advancement in politics and government, in science and technology, in entrepreneurship and culture, in arts and philosophy, in every field of human endeavor originated at a new scale and dimension in the minds of better educated individuals. Human beings became the measure of all things. Reason was the motto of Enlightenment. Empiricism and the doctrine of natural rights（to life, liberty and property） were the main vectors for change as the Industrial Revolution provoked the greatest change of circumstances for what historian Joel Mokyr called "enlightened economy". The idea of perfectibility of man（which can be found nowadays in transhumanist approaches） persists to our days and that is the reason why "Enlightenment will be a living, vital work in progress, a continuing condition of possibility" as James MacGregor Burns put it. This giant wind of change originated in Western Europe swept in Central Eastern Europe beginning with the last decades of the 18-th Century. Oxygen-evolving SnO2-based Ceramic Anodes in Aluminium Electrolysis

This study deals with SnO2-based ceramic anodes doped with Sb203 and CuO, aiming at contributing new data regarding their electrochemical behavior in cryolite melts. The performances of the anodes were evaluated by anodic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and current efficiency and corrosion measurements. The investigation proves that the anodic process of SnO2-based inert anodes occurs at a low overvoltage and the oxygen discharge takes place in one step with an exchange of two electrons. The current efficiency and corrosion were proved to be dependent on the electrolysis parameters and composition of electrolysis bath. For a long term electrolysis, the dissolution of the anode in the cryolite-alumina melt produced small aluminium contamination（ca. 0.2%, mass fraction）.

Physiological cellular responses and adaptations of Rhodococcus erythropolis IBB_(Po1) to toxic organic solvents

A new Gram-positive bacterium, Rhodococcus erythropolis IBBPo1（KF059972.1） was isolated from a crude oil-contaminated soil sample by enrichment culture method. R. erythropolis IBBPo1 was able to tolerate a wide range of toxic compounds, such as antibiotics（800–1000 μg/mL）,synthetic surfactants（50–200 μg/mL）, and organic solvents（40%–100%）. R. erythropolis IBBPo1 showed good tolerance to both alkanes（cyclohexane, n-hexane, n-decane） and aromatics（toluene, styrene, ethylbenzene） with logPOW（logarithm of the partition coefficient of the solvent in octanol–water mixture） values between 2.64 and 5.98. However, alkanes were less toxic for R. erythropolis IBBPo1 cells, compared with aromatics. The high organic solvent tolerance of R. erythropolis IBBPo1 could be due to the presence in their large genome of some catabolic（alkB, alkB1, todC1, todM, xylM）, transporter（HAE1） and trehalose-6-phosphate synthase（otsA1, KF059973.1） genes. Numerous and complex physiological cellular responses and adaptations involved in organic solvent tolerance were revealed in R. erythropolis IBBPo1 cells exposed 1 and 24 hr to 1% organic solvents. R. erythropolis IBBPo1 cells adapt to 1% organic solvents by changing surface hydrophobicity, morphology and their metabolic fingerprinting.Considerable modifications in otsA1 gene sequence were also observed in cells exposed to organic solvents（except ethylbenzene）.

A Comparative Analysis of Binary Logistic Regression and Analytical Hierarchy Process for Landslide Susceptibility Assessment in the Dobrovǎt River Basin,Romania

A correct assessment of the landslide susceptibility component is extremely useful for the diminution of associated potential risks to local economic development, particularly in regard to land use planning and soil conservation. The purpose of the present study was to compare the usefulness of two methods, i.e., binary logistic regression(BLR) and analytical hierarchy process(AHP), for the assessment of landslide susceptibility over a 130-km^2 area in the Moldavian Plateau(eastern Romania) region, where landslides affect large areas and render them unsuitable for agriculture. A large scale inventory mapping of all types of landslides(covering 13.7% of the total area) was performed using orthophoto images, topographical maps, and field surveys. A geographic information system database was created, comprising the nine potential factors considered as most relevant for the landsliding process. Five factors(altitude, slope angle, slope aspect, surface lithology, and land use) were further selected for analysis through the application of a tolerance test and the stepwise filtering procedure of BLR. For each predictor, a corresponding raster layer was built and a dense grid of equally spaced points was generated, with an approximately equal number of points inside and outside the landslide area, in order to extract the values of the predictors from raster layers. Approximately half of the total number of points was used for model computation, while the other half was used for validation. Analytical hierarchy process was employed to derive factor weights, with several pair-wise comparison matrices being tested for this purpose. The class weights, on a scale of 0 to 1, were taken as normalized landslide densities. A comparison of results achieved through these two approaches showed that BLR was better suited for mapping landslide susceptibility, with 82.8% of the landslide area falling into the high and very high susceptibility classes. This paper reports on the statistical behavior of the optical Intraday Variability of BL Lac S5 0716＋714. Available Intraday Variability data in the opti- cal are tested to see whether or not the magnitude is lognormally distributed. Our results consistently indicate that this is not the case. This is in agreement with a previ- ous discussion about data for the same object but in a different observational period. Simultaneously, the spectral slope of the light curves is calculated. The implications of these findings on models that describe both the location and source of Intraday Variability are presented.

General Solutions for Hydromagnetic Free Convection Flow over an Infinite Plate with Newtonian Heating, Mass Diffusion and Chemical Reaction

The problem of hydromagnetic free convection flow over a moving infinite vertical plate with Newtonian heating, mass diffusion and chemical reaction in the presence of a heat source is completely solved. Radiative and porous effects are not taken into consideration but they can be immediately included by a simple rescaling of Prandtl number and magnetic parameter. Exact general solutions for the dimensionless velocity and concentration fields and the corresponding Sherwood number and skin friction coefficient are determined under integral form in terms of error function or complementary error function of Gauss. They satisfy all imposed initial and boundary conditions and can generate exact solutions for any problem with technical relevance of this type. As an interesting completion, uncommon in the literature, the differential equations which describe the thermal, concentration and momentum boundary layer, as well as the exact expressions for the thicknesses of thermal, concentration or velocity boundary layers were determined.Numerical results have shown that the thermal boundary layer thickness decreases for increasing values of Prandtl number and the concentration boundary layer thickness is decreasing with Schmidt number. Finally, for illustration,three special cases are considered and the influence of physical parameters on some fundamental motions is graphically underlined and discussed. The required time to reach the flow according with post-transient solution(the steady-state),for cosine/sine oscillating concentrations on the boundary is graphically determined. It is found that, the presence of destructive chemical reaction improves this time for increasing values of chemical reaction parameter.

Synthesis, Characterization and Thermophysical Properties of Three Neoteric Solvents-Ionic Liquids Based on Choline Chloride

The authors prepared,characterized and preliminary studied the properties of some neoteric solvents-ionic liquids based on choline chloride,i.e.,three ionic liquids based on the eutectics of choline chloride（2-hydroxyN,N,N-trimethylethanaminium chloride） with,respectively,urea,malonic acid and citric acid.The obtained mixtures were clear and colorless ionic liquids at room temperature.The thermophysical properties,namely,density,viscosity,and electrical conductivity of these mixtures were investigated as a function of temperature within a range of 298-353 K.Correlations for the temperature dependence of the measured properties were generated and discussed in terms of Arrhenius theory.Finally the electrochemical windows of the eutectic liquids were determined.

Relativistic Dynamics, Electromagnetic Field,and Spin, as All Quantum Effects

We consider a quantum particle as a wave packet in the coordinate space. When the conjugate wave packet in the momentum space is considered, we find that the group velocities of these two wave packets, which describe the particle dynamics, are in agreement with the Hamilton equations only if in the time dependent phases one considers the Lagrangian instead of the Hamiltonian which leads to the conventional Schr?dinger equation. We define a relativistic quantum principle asserting that a quantum particle has a finite frequency spectrum, with a cutoff propagation velocity c as a universal constant not depending on the coordinate system, and that any time dependent phase variation is the same in any system of coordinates. From the time dependent phase invariance,the relativistic kinematics is obtained. We consider two types of possible interactions: 1) An interaction with an external field, by a modification of the time dependent phase differential with the terms proportional to the differentials of the space-time coordinates multiplied with the components of this field four-potential, and 2)an interaction by a deformation of the space-time coordinates, due to a gravitational field. From the invariance of the time dependent phase with field components, we obtain a mechanical force of the form of Lorentz’s force, and three Maxwell equations: The Gauss-Maxwell equations for the electric and magnetic fluxes, and the Faraday-Maxwell equation for the electromagnetic induction. When the fourth equation,Ampère-Maxwell, is considered, the interaction field takes the form of the electromagnetic field. For a low propagation velocity of the particle waves, we get a packet of waves with the time dependent phases proportional to the relativistic Hamiltonian, as in Dirac’s famous theory of spin, and a slowly-varying amplitude with a phase proportional to the momentum and this velocity.
