Epidemiology of foot burns in a Dutch burn centre

Background:Although the feet involve a small percentage of the total body surface area,they can have major effects in daily life,caused by prolonged bed rest,hospitalization and high risk of both early and late *** aim of this study was to define the aetiology,treatment and outcomes of foot burns,with special interest in paediatric patients,patients with diabetic disease and burns acquired at the ***:This is a retrospective cohort study of 82 patients who were admitted to one of the three burn centres in the Netherlands during the period 2004 to *** patients had a median age of 43.5 years(range 0.01–85.9),and included 14 children and 8 *** were collected from the hospital ***:Scalding was the most common cause of the *** all patients required surgical *** is notable that most of hospitalized patients(82%)were not admitted on the day of *** had a significantly shorter length of stay compared to adults(p=0.01).The eight patients with diabetes had a significantly longer length of hospital stay,more complications and more often residual defects compared to the non-diabetic *** 13 patients,the injury took place at *** of these burns were caused by scalding,and foot burns caused by chemicals at work were rare(two patients).Conclusions:Although the incidence of foot burns is low,there is a significant morbidity due to complications and long hospital *** following three points are *** referral to a burn centre is *** is important to educate diabetic patients on the risk of complications and adverse outcomes after burn *** measures at the workplace are worth considering.

Objective:Computed Tomography(CT)and Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)are commonly employed in pre-operative evaluation for cochlear implant ***,with a decrease in the age of implantation,even minor radiation exposure can cause detrimental effects on children over their *** current study compares different cochlear measurements from CT and MRI scans and evaluates the feasibility of using only an MRI scan for radiological evaluation before cochlear ***:A longitudinal observational study was conducted on 94 ears/47 children,employing CT and MRI *** CT and MRI scan measurements include,A value,B value,Cochlear duct length(CDL),twoturn cochlear length,alpha and beta angles to look for cochlear *** nerve diameter was measured using *** values were ***:The mean difference between measurements from CT and MRI scans for A value,B value,CDL,and two-turn cochlear length values was 0.567±0.413 mm,0.406±0.368 mm,2.365±1.675 mm,and 2.063±1.477 mm respectively without any significant *** alpha and beta angle measures were comparable,with no statistically significant ***:The study suggests that MRI scans can be the only radiological investigation needed with no radiation risk and reduces the cost of cochlear implant program in the paediatric *** is no significant difference between the measurements obtained from CT and MRI ***,observed discrepancies in cochlear measurements across different populations require regionally or race-specific standardized values to ensure accurate diagnosis and precision in cochlear implant *** aspect must be addressed to ensure positive outcomes for patients.

Although the expression levels of total xylose-binding proteins（XBPs）were up-regulated significantly in the activated hepatic stellate cells（HSCs）,however,their denomination,distribution,and functions in HSCs were ***,70 XBPs from the activated LX-2 and 64 XBPs from the quiescent LX-2 were isolated,identified and annotated.A total of 30 XBPs were up-regulated（all fold change＞1.5,p＜0.05）and 14XBPs were down-regulated（all fold chang＜0.67,p＜0.05）in the activated *** XBPs were localized at the cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane in HSCs and cirrhotic liver tissues by cy/*** XBPs（i.e.,PDIA6 and CFL2）responsible for the regulation of protein binding were up-regulated,and those（i.e.,TUBB and MX1）responsible for the regulation of catalytic activity were up-regulated in the activated ***,2 candidates（e.g.,PDIA6 and APOAl）were selected for further verification in the sera of hepatitis B virus induced liver fibrosis/cirrhosis patients（HB）using western blotting and serum *** of PDIA6 and APOA1 as biomarker candidates show a higher discrimination（AUC=0.8985,p＜0.0001）relative to APOA1（AUC=0.8738,p＜0.0001）in sera from *** precision alteration of the XBPs referred to pathological changes in liver fibrosis/cirrhosis may provide pivotal information to discover the biomarkers for diagnosis of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis and development of new anti-fibrotic strategies.

Objective: To report the antenatal detection rate in a consecutive series of l iveborn infants with atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD). Design: Review and a nalysis of referrals for detailed fetal echocardiography and postnatal diagnosis of AVSD. Setting: Tertiary referral centre for congenital heart disease centre with data prospectively collected between 1996 to 2001. Results: 92 consecutivel y liveborn infants with AVSDs were identified of which 27 (29%) were detected b y routine obstetric antenatal ultrasound. The antenatal diagnosis rate was worse for liveborn infants with trisomy 21(12 of 49(25%) v 15 of 43 (35%) chromosom ally normal children) and for infants with AVSD without other structural heart d isease (18 of 74 (24%) v 9 of 18 (50%) infants with associated structural hear t disease). Conclusion: Despite the potential ability of fetal ultrasound to det ect AVSDs, the antenatal diagnosis rate is poor. This is particularly true for i nfants with trisomy 21 and is of importance when counselling parents with an app arently normal fetal ultrasound scan.

Terahertz-(THz-)based electron manipulation has recently been shown to hold tremendous promise as a technology for manipulating and driving the next generation of compact ultrafast electron ***,we demonstrate an ultrafast electron diffractometer with THz-driven pulse *** electron bunches from a conventional DC gun are compressed by a factor of 10 and reach a duration of~180 fs(FWHM)with 10,000 electrons/pulse at a 1 kHz repetition *** resulting ultrafast electron source is used in a proof-of-principle experiment to probe the photoinduced dynamics of single-crystal *** THz-compressed electron beams produce high-quality diffraction patterns and enable the observation of the ultrafast structural dynamics with improved time *** results validate the maturity of THz-driven ultrafast electron sources for use in precision applications.

W-boson mass anomaly from a general SU(2)_(L)scalar multiplet

We explain the W-boson mass anomaly by introducing an SU(2)_(L)scalar multiplet with general isospin and hypercharge{in the case without its vacuum expectation value}.It is shown that the dominant contribution from the scalar multiplet to the W-boson mass arises at the one-loop level,which can be expressed in terms of the electroweak(EW)oblique parameters T and S at leading *** first rederive the general formulae of T and S induced by a scalar multiplet of EW charges,confirming the results in *** then study several specific examples of great phenomenological interest by applying these general *** a result,it is found that the model with a scalar multiplet in an SU(2)_(L)real representation with Y=0 cannot generate the required M_(W)correction because it leads to vanishing values of T and ***,the cases with scalars in a complex representation under SU(2)_(L)with a general hypercharge can explain the M_(W)excess observed by CDF-Ⅱowing to nonzero T and *** further consider the strong constraints from the perturbativity and EW global fit of the precision data and vary the isospin representation and hypercharge of the additional scalar multiplet to assess the extent of the model to solve the W-boson mass *** turns out that these constraints play important roles in setting limits on the model parameter *** also briefly describe the collider signatures of the extra scalar multiplet,especially when it contains long-lived,heavy,highly charged states.
