Experimental Researches on the Accuracy of Micro- Electromechanical Accelerometer-Array in Seafloor Failure Deformation Measurement

At present,there are few technologies applied to in situ observation of seabed deformation,among which the micro-electromechanical accelerometer-array(hereinafter referred to as accelerometers array)is a very advantageous measurement method,with both commercial products and successful application ***,the coupling effect between accelerometer-array and sur-rounding soil and the linkage effect of accelerometer-array itself during the deformation may influence the accuracy and reliability of the measurement data.A simulation test chamber was designed and processed,and four groups of simulation tests were carried out to explore the coupling effect and linkage effect of accelerometer-array in the soil with different degree of *** results show that the accelerometer-array and the soil coupled well,and the coupling effect is positively correlated with the degree of soil *** ratio of accumulative deviation to soil lateral deformation is high at the initial stage of deformation(0-50 mm)and reduced with the continuous increase of deformation(>100 mm).In the process of liquefied soil deformation,the linkage effect of accelerometer array can be ignored,and is negatively correlated with the degree of soil consolidation.A concept to improve the measurement accu-racy of accelerometer-array in different seafloor failure deformation modes is *** research results provide references for the modification of accelerometer-array and the improvement for other flexible rod-shaped deformation sensors.

Sea surface temperature(SST)in the Yellow Sea Warm Current(YSWC)pathway is sensitive to the East Asian Winter Monsoon(EAWM)and ***,the role of the YSWC in the evolution of regional SST remains ***,we present new U 37 k′based SST and grain size sequences spanning the last 6092 years in the sediment core Z1,which was retrieved from the central Yellow Sea muddy ***,U 37 k′-SST gradually increased since 6.1 ka BP,with a series of centennial-scale fl *** variation was mainly caused by EAWM when YSWC was weak between 6.1 and~3.9 ka BP,as shown by the end-member content of grain ***,after YSWC was fully developed,i.e.,since~3.9 ka BP,it exerted critical eff ects on SST evolution in its *** 1010-and 538-year cycles of the SST sequence indicated a basic control of solar activity on the oceanic conditions in the Yellow *** is suggested that the variation of total solar irradiance was amplifi ed by thermohaline circulation and then transmitted to the Yellow Sea through the ***,the tropical Pacifi c signal of El Niño was transmitted to the YSWC through the Kuroshio *** dual properties of warm water transported by YSWC to compensate the EAWM and driving by Kuroshio Current closely linked the variation of SST in the YSWC pathway to the Northern Hemisphere high latitude climate and the tropical Pacifi *** fi ndings highlight the signifi cance of YSWC on regional SST evolution and its teleconnection to high and low latitude forcing,which grains a better understanding of the long-term evolution of SST in the middle latitude Yellow Sea.

Experimental study on geochemical characteristic of methane hydrate formed in porous media

The natural occurrence of methane hydrates in marine sediments has been intensively studied over the past decades, and geochemical charac-teristic of hydrate is one of the most attractive research fields. In this paper, we discussed the geochemical anomaly during hydrate formation in porous media. By doing so, we also investigated the temperature influence on hydrate formation under isobaric condition. It turns out that sub-cooling is an important factor to dominate hydrate formation. Larger subcooling provides more powerful driving force for hydrate formation. During the geochemical anomaly research, six kinds of ions and the total dissolved salt （TDS） were measured before and after the experiment in different porous media. The result is that all kinds of ionic concentration increased after hydrate formation which can be defined as salting out effect mainly affected by gas consumption. But the variation ratio of different ions is not equal. Ca^2＋ seems to be the most significantly influenced one, and its variation ratio is up to 80%. Finally, we theoretically made a model to calculate the TDS variation, the result is in good accordance with measured one, especially when gas consumption is large.

Magnetic Characteristics of Surface Sediments of Liaodong Bay, China

Analysis of magnetic properties of marine surface sediments has been gradually proved to be one of the effective means for researching the source of marine sediments. In this paper, samples from 39 sites in Liaodong Bay were collected to analyze the magnetic characteristics of the surface sediments. Magnetic study indicated that the surface sediments of the Liaodong Bay are characterized by magnetite. In the middle and eastern part and the southwest corner of the Bay, the main magnetic grains were coarse multi-domain and pseudo-single-domain particles, while in other areas single-domain and pseudo-single-domain particles constitute the majority. Based on grain size and environmental magnetism data, the content of magnetic minerals has a positive correlation with the hydrodynamic environment when the magnetic mineral domain is finer. However, the content of magnetic minerals is in a complex relationship with the hydrodynamic environment in the coarse magnetic domain of magnetic minerals found in central Liaodong Bay and places outside the Fuzhou Bay, implying that the strong hydrodynamic environment accelerates the sedimentation of coarse magnetic minerals. Based on geographic pattern of magnetic properties, it can be inferred that the main provenance of the surface sediments of the Liaodong Bay is the surrounding rivers, and the comparative analysis indicates that Yellow River substances maybe also exist in the bay.

Stress Path Analysis of Deep-Sea Sediments Under the Compression-Shear Coupling Load of Crawler Collectors

The mechanical properties of deep-sea sediments during the driving process of crawler collectors are essential factors in the design of mining *** this study,a crawler load is divided into a normal compression load and a horizontal shear ***,the internal stress state of sedimentary soil is examined through a theoretical calculation and finite element numerical ***,the driving of crawlers is simulated by changing the relative spatial position between the load and stress unit,obtaining the stress path of the soil *** on the calculation results,the effect of the horizontal shear load on the soil stress response is analyzed at different depths,and the spatial variation law of the soil stress path is *** results demonstrate that the horizontal shear load has a significant effect on the rotation of the principal stress,and the reverse rotation of the principal stress axis becomes obvious with the increase in the burial *** stress path curve of the soil is different at various *** spatial variation rule of the stress path of the shallow soil is complex,whereas the stress path curve of the deep soil tends to shrink as the depth *** stress path of the corresponding depth should be selected according to the actual research purpose and applied to the laboratory test.

Sedimentary Characteristics of Relict Deposits on the Western South Yellow Sea

Integrated studies of vertical sedimentary sequences, grain sizes, and benthic foraminifera and ostracoda, in combination with AMS 14C dating, and 210Pb and 137Cs analysis were carried out in three vibracores taken from the area of relict deposits on the western South Yellow Sea. The relict sands, which are about 0.4 m thick, overlie on the Early Holocene coastal marsh or tidal flat deposits with an evident erosional interface in between. The middle and upper parts or sometimes the whole of the relict sands have been reworked under the modern dynamic environment. The sedimentation rate varies between 0.20–0.30 cm year-1. The relict sands show a bimodal grain-size distribution pattern in frequency curves, with a sharp peak in the coarse fraction between 3Φ and 4Φ and a secondary peak in the fine fraction of about 7Φ. Of the benthic foraminiferal and ostracod assemblages, the reworked relict sands are characterized by the mixing of the nearshore euryhaline shallow-water species and deeper water species. The erosional interface at the bottom of the relict sands is considered as a regional ravinement surface formed during the transgression in the Early Holocene due to shoreface retreating landwards. The relict sands were accumulated on the ravinement surface during the transgression in the deglaciation period as lag deposits after winnowing and reworking by marine dynamic processes. And the secondary peak of fine fraction in the frequency curve for the relict sands suggests the input of fine-grained sediments during the reworking process. As the conclusion, the relict sands in the study area are interpreted as a type of reworked relict sediments.

Stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen variations in foraminiferal shells have been widely used in paleo-environment ***,studies about the shells of benthic foraminifera in methanehydrate-bearing sediments as reliable geochemical proxies to reconstruct the potential methane release events in the geologic past are *** this study,we present the stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of fossil benthic foraminifera including one epifaunal species(Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi)and two infaunal species(Bulimina mexicana and Uvigerina peregrina)from the Site U1447 of IODP 353 Expedition to trace methane events in the Andaman Sea,where one of the thickest and deepest gas hydrate stability zones was ***δ^(13)C values of benthic foraminifera show that there are eight distinct intervals with negative values in the last~10 Myr,interpreted as a record of long-term fluctuations in methane *** of these methane events occurred during the glacial sea-level lowstands in the last~1.1 ***,therefore,infer that the trigger mechanism for these events might be the hydrate destabilization caused by sea level *** methane events that occurred at~2.11 and~5.93 Ma are more likely related to the sudden changes in sedimentation,either slide events or marked variations in sedimentation rate.

Variations of the Eco-Hydro-Climatic environment Response to the 2015/2016 Super El Niño Event in the Mindanao Dome Upwelling System

A super El Niño event occurred in the equatorial Pacific during 2015-2016,accompanied by considerable regional eco-hydro-climatic variations within the Mindanao Dome(MD)upwelling system in the tropical western *** timeseries of various oceanic data from 2013 to 2017,the variability of eco-hydro-climatic conditions response to the 2015/2016 super El Niño in the upper 300 m of the MD region are analyzed in this *** showed that during the 2015/2016 super El Niño event,the upwelling in the MD region was greatly enhanced compared to those before and after this El Niño *** Rossby waves and the massive loss of surface water in the western Pacific were suggested to be the main reasons for this enhanced ***-creased precipitation caused by changes in large-scale air-sea interaction led to the increased surface *** in the struc-tures of the thermohaline and nutrient distribution in deep waters contributed to the increased surface chlorophyll a,suggesting a po-sitive effect of El Niño on surface carbon storage in the MD *** on the above analysis,the synopsis mechanism illustrating the eco-hydro-climatic changing processes over the MD upwelling system responding to the El Niño event was *** high-lights the prospect for the role played by El Niño in local eco-hydro-climatic effects,which has further profound implications for understanding the influence of the global climate changes on the ocean carbon cycle.

Observation of physical oceanography at the Y3 seamount (Yap Arc) in winter 2014

Seamounts aff ect the surrounding physical oceanography and form unique dynamic *** infl uences of these processes on biological and sedimentary distributions are quite diff erent in seamount areas at diff erent *** Y3 seamount is located in the Yap Arc of the tropical Western Pacifi c *** water depth of its summit is~280 *** on fi eld data obtained in December 2014 and other open-access data,the physical oceanography around the Y3 seamount was preliminarily *** results show that the upper layer(0-150 m)was under the infl uence of the westward-fl owing North Equatorial Current(NEC),while the eastward-fl owing North Equatorial Undercurrent(NEUC)controlled the water between 200-800 *** NEC was strong and steady,but the NEUC was disturbed by the Y3 *** cold dome above the Y3 seamount was not caused by a Taylor cap or tidal rectifi cation but probably by upwelling during the survey *** currents were squeezed against topography and greatly amplifi ed in the Y3 *** thicknesses of the surface turbulent layers were greatly infl uenced by the spring-neap tidal *** turbulent diff usivities in the sea surface layer above the Y3 seamount were much larger than those in the open *** showed that the surface wind stress greatly aff ected the turbulent mixing in the surface layer of the Y3 *** reciprocal action between the amplifi ed tidal currents and topography was the most likely cause of the turbulent mixing near the bottom of the Y3 *** study can provide a scientifi c basis for further study of biological and depositional characteristics at the Y3 seamount.
