Soil Aeration Variability as Affected by Reoxidation

The interplay between soil physical parameters during the recovery from anoxic stresses （reoxidation） is largely unrecognized. This study was conducted to chaxacterise the soil aeration status and derive correlations between variable aeration factors during reoxidation. Surface layers （0-30 cm） of three soil types, Haplic Phaeozem, Mollic Gleysol, and Eutric Cambisol （FAO soil group）, were selected for analysis. The moisture content was determined for a range of pF values （0, 1.5, 2.2, 2.7, and 3.2）, corresponding to the available water for microorganisms and plant roots. The variability of a number of soil aeration parameters, such as water potential （pF）, air-filled porosity （Eg）, oxygen diffusion rate （ODR）, and redox potential （Eh）, were investigated. These parameters were found to be interrelated in most cases. There were significant （P 〈 0.001） negative correlations of pF, Eg, and ODR with Eh. A decrease in water content as a consequence of soil reoxidation was manifested by an increase in the values of aeration factors in the soil environment. These results contributed to understanding of soil redox processes during recovery from flooding and might be useful for development of agricultural techniques aiming at soil reoxidation and soil fertility optimisation.

The article presents an ontology called“Science”designed for representing proved and disproved statements extracted from scientific papers from the database of the ProOptiBeef *** argue that the proved and disproved statements are the best characterization of the content of the papers they are extracted *** show that ontological representation of proved and disproved statements not only facilitates the access to the content of the papers and increases the precision of a semantical search,but also allows for an automatic generation of new statements from the ones already coded in the ontology.

The scope of this paper lies primarily on the recognition of what Debray called transmission and communication, however, in this article exclusively with regard to the Ancient Greek literature and culture. Transmission understood as the process in which ＂agencies and human actors transmit the ideas in historical and diachronic order＂ and communication implying the ＂synchronic interchange by linguistic impact between senders and receivers＂ are presented as two paths in which cultural messages are introduced and transmitted by means of ＂literary production＂. Early Greek literature, which was based on the oral performance and mirrored the language in its prototypical form, seemed to be the main source of information for the reconstruction of the two above processes. In the proposed model, the new understanding of the media introduced by Debray plays the most important role, because in the theory of ＂cultural transmission＂, the medium can be not only ＂a symbolic process, a social code, a material device＂ but also a human being. Therefore, on the basis of this theory, mediology can be described as the way of 4M： message, medium, milieu, and mediation.

The goal of the study was the development of a system to monitor the members of supervisory and management boards. The system currently covers 8,454 joint stock companies registered in Poland. The main purpose of the system is to monitor every change in the composition of every board of every joint stock company, from March 2001 up to the present, and it is updated every month. This system, however, also enables us to confirm some of the theories from the field of corporate governance. A generation change has been identified in the boards of the joint stock companies which were examined. Women constitute a large, and continuously increasing, section of the board members. The number of family companies, and of family involvement in boards, is still increasing. Board members of financial institutions （and not just of banks） possess significantly more directorates than board members of non-financial institutions. The number of interlocking directorates is positively linked to the macroeconomic development indicator of the total investment as percentage of GDP for Poland.

The intellectual heritage of modernity needs rethinking. It is marked by radical humanism and implied by the ideas of Descartes and Kant above all, which introduces an unbridgeable gap between animals and human persons （nonhuman and human animals）. Intuitive sensibility to the question of the welfare of nonhuman animals meets a theoretical ally in the rapidly growing knowledge on their subjectivity and makes us pose a questions about their ontological status. This context arouses a possibility of a turn to personalist ethics, yet not to its anthropocentric version implied by Kant, but to personalism conceived of as an instance of value ethics as exemplified by Antonio Rosmini and Karol Wojtyta （john paul ii）.

The title of this paper refers to Michael Oakeshott＇s distinction between the politics of faith and the politics of scepticism. The ＂faith＂ expresses a belief in the capacity of government to concentrate all the power and resources upon the project of human improvement and perfection, while the ＂scepticism＂ is the politics of the powerless in which government cannot produce perfection and enjoys only limited opportunity of directing the activities of its subjects. The aim of this article is to revise Oakeshott＇s distinction in order to apply it to the discussion on inequalities affecting Europe. This discussion held by Chantal Mouffe, Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens focused on issues such as： modern patterns of inequality, the coexistence of different ethnic, religious and political forms of life, ＂legitimization＂ of social inequalities, the institutionalization of norms of equality, the problem of recognition, the common identity and so on. The key question is： How the values of equality and justice are best realized in the structure of modern society？ To answer this question, it is necessary not only to assess critilically the authority of governments, but also to examine possible ways of development of the idea of liberal democracy and power relations in contemporary political socidtts. What is our perspective on the way to solve these problems--the reinvention of politics or democratizing democracy？ Even if this research will not help us to find the best political project, however we may be less often cheated in this discussion by irrelevant and ambiguous arguments.

The paper demonstrates the actual level of chromium contamination at the site of the old tannery waste lagoon in Serniki community (SE Poland). Despite the fact that since 1994 this area is not exploited, the chromium presence is still detected in soil, water and plants. The current study is the 4th phase (after 1989, 2001 and 2004) of checking and controlling the chromium concentration in this territory. The chromium content was assessed after soil and plant mineralization using FAAS method. Total chromium concentrations in soil samples reached values of 2.25 - 18.25 mg·kg-1 dry mass. Levels of chromium in water samples ranged between 0.008 and 0.017 mg·dm-3 for Wieprz River and the trough, situated in the tannery centre, respectively. Absorption of chromium by plants depended from the plant species. The highest Cr content in the stalks of Oenothera biennis, whilst the lowest in Phragmites australis were detected. Finally, it was assumed that soil chromium content noted in 2009 was by 42% - 83% lower in relation to the data from 2004. Consequently, nowadays the tannery waste lagoon site is not so threat to the health of local residents and to the surrounding ecosystem.

Evaluation of Factors Influencing the Biomass of Soil Microorganisms and DNA Content

The aim of the study was the statistical evaluation of the impact of water potential (pF), oxygen availability (ODR) and the way of land use on microbial biomass (MB) and soil DNA content. Soil was extracted from the surface (0 - 20 cm) and subsurface (20 - 40 cm) layers of Mollic Gleysol. Soil material was collected in July 2009 from the village Kosiorow (SE part of Poland), from the two distinct neighbouring areas: agriculturally exploited (AE), and fallow land (FL), which served as the control area. Moisture content was determined for a range of pF values (0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0), which corresponded to availability of water usable by microorganisms and plant roots. Finally, our results revealed significant (p < 0.001) positive relationship between DNA and soil MB content, and negative correlations between soil MB and both pF and ODR. Importantly, MB seemed significantly dependent on the different way of land use, and higher MB content was noted in the soil agriculturally exploited (p < 0.05) in contrast to the control area.
