The qanats of Xinjiang:historical development, characteristics and modern implications for environmental protection

In China, qanats （kan＇erjing/karez） exist only in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, being one form of traditional irrigation technology that made great contributions to oasis civilizations. There are different opinions on the origin and date of the qanats in Xinjiang due to a lack of adequate evidences. And uncontrolled over-exploitation of groundwater by pumping wells, as well as the expansion of surface water interventions nowadays, has caused serious impacts on not only the qanats, but also local ecological environments. There exist long-time arguments on whether the qanats should be restored or preserved. This study aimed to examine the historical development, geological conditions and characteristics, and modern implications of the qanats for oasis environmental protection, and to discuss the initiatives taken by local governments. The whole Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region was in- cluded as the study area, with a specific focus on Turpan prefecture. The materials and data were obtained from literature review and governmental documentation. Based on a systematic examination of three prevailing theories on the origination of Xinjiang＇s qanats, it is suggested modern archaeological techniques could be good solutions to explore the origination in addition to historical records used normally. Although qanats fail to fully meet today＇s enormous water demands, their rich historical, cultural, ecological and environmental implications in arid areas should not be underestimated. As a cultural heritage and ecologically-friendly engineering creation, qanat systems shall be kept in good condition and function by a valuable number. Recent initiatives to protect and restore target qanat systems in Xinjiang could provide positive examples for the practices in other regions of the world where the protection and restoration of qanats or similar technologies are desired.

City spirit is the soul of the *** spread of city spirit not only could establish a civilized specimen for citizens,but also create a good cultural atmosphere for the *** residents’perception of city spirit is extensive,and most of Hefei citizens consider the expression words of city spirit are very appropriate,which is enlightened,open-minded,actual and *** majority of Hefei citizens willing to support the propaganda and promotion of the city spirit,and they think the promotion of the city spirit plays a key role in the way of city’s *** addition,significant differences in the perception of urban spirituality emerge among residents with different economic and social *** are four aspects about how to enhance the public perception of city spirit,which including increasing dissemination channels and means,strengthening guidance according to the difference of residents,encouraging participation of community residents,and building good atmosphere depending on the city’s advantages.

Data-driven Wasserstein distributionally robust chance-constrained optimization for crude oil scheduling under uncertainty

Crude oil scheduling optimization is an effective method to enhance the economic benefits of oil *** uncertainties,including uncertain demands of crude distillation units(CDUs),might make the production plans made by the traditional deterministic optimization models infeasible.A data-driven Wasserstein distributionally robust chance-constrained(WDRCC)optimization approach is proposed in this paper to deal with demand uncertainty in crude oil ***,a new deterministic crude oil scheduling optimization model is developed as the basis of this *** Wasserstein distance is then used to build ambiguity sets from historical data to describe the possible realizations of probability distributions of uncertain demands.A cross-validation method is advanced to choose suitable radii for these ambiguity *** deterministic model is reformulated as a WDRCC optimization model for crude oil scheduling to guarantee the demand constraints hold with a desired high probability even in the worst situation in ambiguity *** proposed WDRCC model is transferred into an equivalent conditional value-at-risk representation and further derived as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming *** case studies from a real-world refinery are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed ***-of-sample tests demonstrate that the solution of the WDRCC model is more robust than those of the deterministic model and the chance-constrained model.

The Nu-Salween River(NSR),the longest free-flow river in Southeast Asia,plays an irreplaceable role in social development and ecological *** lower NSR region is particularly valuable as it is inhabited by approximately 6.7 million *** basin has limited hydraulic conservancy infrastructure and insufficient ability to cope with climate change *** the hydrological characteristics and changes in the basin provides the scientific basis for rational protection and development of the ***,owing to the limitation of observation data,previous studies have focused on the local area and neglected the study of the lower reaches,which is not enough to reflect the spatial characteristics of the entire *** this study,the ECMWF 5th generation reanalysis data(ERA5)and Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation(MSWEP)were applied to develop a geomorphology-based hydrological model(GBHM)for reconstructing hydrological datasets(***-ERA5 and GBHM-MSWEP).The reconstructed datasets covering the complete basin were verified against the gauge observation and compared with other commonly used streamflow products,including Global Flood Awareness System v2.1,GloFAS-Reanalysis dataset v3.0,and linear optimal runoff aggregate(LORA).The comparison results revealed that GBHM-ERA5 is significantly better than the other four datasets and provides a good reproduction of the hydrological characteristics and trends of the *** analysis of GBHM-ERA5 revealed that:(1)A multi-year mean surface runoff represented 39%of precipitation over the basin during 1980–2018,which had low surface runoff in the upstream,while areas around the Three Parallel Rivers Area and the estuary had abundant surface runoff.(2)The surface runoff and discharge coefficient of variations in spring were larger than those in other seasons,and the inter-annual variation in the downstream was smaller than that in the upstream and midstream regions.(3)More than 70%of the basin are

Combating climate change calls for a global technological cooperation system built on the concept of ecological civilization

Climate change has been considered as the most paramount global environmental problem and the biggest externality throughout the history of human development. Accordingly, the world is facing unprecedented technological innovation and collaborative demands to deal with climate change. In the 2015 Paris Agreement, a long-term vision of technology development and transfer implementation was proposed, and policy and financial support for technological innovation in the area of climate change was advocated. These terms aim to enable developing countries to acquire the necessary technology in the early stage of the technology cycle to address climate change challenge. However, the traditional technological innovation and cooperation mode based on industrial civilization can hardly meet the technical demands of global climate protection. To ensure the continuous development and deployment of technology in a required scale and pace, a new global technical cooperation system is proposed to develop based on the philosophy of ecological civilization. The core contents of this system are supposed be as follows:to implement all-win cooperation targets, adhering to cooperation principles of Eco-man, adopt cooperation content that reflects synergy, pursue cooperation based on mutual trust, encourage participation of multiple actors, and promote sharing of cooperative outputs.

Deformation characteristics and inertial effect of complex aluminum alloy sheet part under impact hydroforming:experiments and numerical analysis

Impact hydroforming(IHF),as a novel sheet metal forming technology with the advantages of high strain rate forming and flexible liquid loading,is highly suitable for efficiently manufacturing aluminum complex-shaped sheet *** this paper,deformation characteristics of complex sheet parts under IHF are systematically *** mechanical properties of 2024 aluminum alloy under a wide range of strain rates(10-3 s-1–3.3×103 s-1)were *** indicated that the elongation of 2024 aluminum alloy was improved by 116.01%under strain rates of 3.306-×-103 s-1,referring to 10-3 ***,a complex-shaped part with symmetrical and asymmetrical structures was *** deformation characteristics of sheet and role of inertial effect under IHF were investigated with well-developed solid–liquid coupling finite element(SLC-FE)model with high *** deformation tendency is found for symmetrical structure with notably prior deformation at central zone,showing a“bulging”profile at initial forming ***,synchronous deformation is presented for asymmetrical structure with a“flat”***,distinctive inertial effect was observed at different positions change for both symmetrical and asymmetrical structures,in which lower values were resulted at their central ***,the inertial effect evolved with the impacting ***,larger difference of inertial effect was observed with increasing impacting speed.

Review:The international Sediment Initiative case studies of sediment problems in river basins and their management

Management of sediment in river basins and waterways has been an important issue for water managers throughout history. The changing nature of sediment issues has meant that water managers today face many complex technical and environmental challenges in relation to sediment management. UNESCO’s international Hydrological Programme(IHP) launched the international Sediment Initiative(ISI) in *** aims to further advance sustainable sediment management on a global scale. This is achieved through the delivery of a decision support framework for sediment management that provides guidance on legislative and institutional solutions, applicable across a range of socio-economic and physiographic settings in the context of global change. ISI mobilizes international experience on sediment problems and their management through the compilation of a series of case studies representative of a broad range of physiographic and socio-economic conditions, which are made available as guidance for policy makers dealing with water and river basin management. Case studies prepared to date include the basins of the Nile, Mississippi, Rhine, Volga, Yellow, and Haihe and Liaohe rivers. Available in full from the ISI website,these detailed case studies are briefly introduced in this review articles.

Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) is a Chinese national strategy which calls for cooperative economic, political and cultural exchange at the global level along the ancient Silk Road. The overwhelming natural hazards located along the belt and road bring great challenges to the success of BRI. In this framework, a 5-year international program was launched to address issues related to hazards assessment and disaster risk reduction(DRR). The first workshop of this program was held in Beijing with international experts from over 15 countries. Risk conditions on Belt and Road Countries(BRCs) have been shared and science and technology advancements on DRR have been disseminated during the workshop. Under this program, six task forces have been setup to carry out collaborative research works and three prioritized study areas have been established. This workshop announced the launching of this program which involved partners from different countries including Pakistan, Nepal, Russia, Italy, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka and Tajikistan. The program adopted the objectives of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and United Nation Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and was implemented to assess disaster risk in BRCs and to propose suitable measures for disaster control which can be appropriate both for an individual country and for specific sites. This paper deals with the outcomes of the workshop and points out opportunities for the near future international cooperation on this matter.

This article has summarized China’s western region’s characteristics of attracting and utilizing fo reign capital from 1986-2010. It has described the present situa- tion that the distribution of FDI here is unbalanced and the ability of absorbing foreign investment of this region is weak. TFP of the provinces in China’ Western Region has been calculated, and been used to measure technological progress. Through constructing VAB Model, this article has empiri- cally analyzed the relationship between FDI and TFP. The result proves that FDI has some facilitation to the technolo- gi cal progress of China’s Western Region, but is not very significant. In the process of attracting and using foreign investment, the Western Region of China should optimize investment environment, and expand FDI scale;change the concept of attracting investment, and improve the perfor- mance of foreign investment;encourage Sino-foreign joint venture, and strengthen technical cooperation.
