1 Introduction An engineering front refers to important directions that have a significant impact on and lead the future innovation of engineering science and technology.It is characterized by its forward looking,leading,and exploratory nature.Since 2017,the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE)has annually organized a project known as“Global Engineering Fronts,”identifying and releasing engineering research fronts and engineering development fronts,tracking the trends in engineering science and technology,and actively guiding the academic development and promoting innovation in engineering science and technology.

A letter to the editor constitutes a short communication addressing a range of topics pertinent to the readership of a journal(Dkhar,2018).This format offers several benefits,such as timeliness,accessibility,innovation,and conciseness,thereby serving as an effective means to disseminate cuttingedge scientific ideas.Over the past five years,there has been a considerable increase in the number of letters published,representing the highest growth rate(approximately 20%)observed in the last three decades(Figure 1A).In the field of academic publishing,letters to the editor are typically more concise than typical research papers.

Maximizing the sustainable recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)shows economic and environmental significance.This study recovered lithium cobaltate(LiCoO_(2),LCO)from spent LIBs cathode powder.The recovered LCO was then combined with NaHSO_(3)to remove refractory organic pollutants of carbamazepine(CBZ)in water.The degradation of CBZ reached 80.0%within 60 min,by 1O_(2),SO_(4),OH and O_(2)^(-)generated in the LCO/NaHSO_(3)reaction.The electron transfer between Co(III)and Co(II)was beneficial to the generation of free radicals.The LCO/NaHSO_(3)degraded CBZ effectively in both secondary outlet water and tap water.However,high concentrations of inorganic ions(Cl^(−),HCO_(3)^(-),HPO_(4)^(2-),SO_(2)−4,NO_(3)^(-))and natural organic matter(humic acid,HA)could inhibit the degradation of CBZ.After three cycles,the stability of the LCO/NaHSO_(3)system was demonstrated by the maintained high efficiency in the degradation of CBZ.The obtained data indicate that the LCO/NaHSO_(3)system holds great application potential in the field of advanced oxidation degradation of pollutants.

In a broad sense,climate change is a long-term shift in global or regional climate patterns on Earth,which can be driven by both natural dynamics such as solar cycles or volcanic eruptions and human activities.However,it has been shown that deforestation since the dawn of Industrial Revolution,combined with the persistent emission of greenhouse gases(e.g.,CO_(2)and methane,which trap the Sun's heat)from intense agricultural and industrial activities,are the primary drivers of climate change over the past two centuries(Ritchie,2020;Lynas et al.,2021).

The objective of this study was to optimize the extraction process of total sterols from wild Pyracantha fortuneana leaves (WPFL), and explore their antioxidant and whitening activities. The yield of total sterols (WPFLTPS) was used as indicator, and the single factor experiment was used to investigate the effects of extraction solvent, solid-liquid ratio, ultrasonic temperature and ultrasonic time on the yield of WPFLTPS. Based on this, the orthogonal experimental design was used to optimize the extraction conditions. The DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS [2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] and nitrite methods were used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of WPFLTPS in vitro. The whitening activity was evaluated by the inhibitory effect on tyrosinase. The results showed that for optimal extraction process of WPFLTPS, the extraction solvent was absolute ethanol, ultrasonic temperature was 50 ℃, solid-liquid ratio was 1:16 g/mL, and ultrasonic time was 25 minutes. Under these conditions, the yield of WPFLTPS was (11.00± 0.03) mg/g. In the range of 0.5~5 mg/mL, WPFLTPS had strong scavenging effects on DPPH radicals, ABTS+ radicals and nitrite ions, as well as a strong inhibitory effect on tyrosinase, demonstrating a good dose-response relationship. This extraction process was stable and reliable for extracting WPFLTPS. The WPFLTPS can be used as a new, natural antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor in functional foods. © 2024 editorial Department of Science and Technology of Food Science. All rights reserved.
