PURPOSE: United Arab Emirates (UAE) is part of the GCC countries and ranks 18 on 2007 WHO list of the fattest countries with 68.3% of its citizens with an unhealthy weight. The WHO data in 2008 state that the prevalence of overweight in UAE is 71%, while it is 61% in the UK, 54% in Germany, and 45% in France. The increasing overweight and obesity in the UAE are closely related to high social-economic development. Accordingly, the medical authority has observed that the rates of hypertension and diabetes mellitus type 2 appear to be one of the highest rates worldwide. We presume that the increase prevalence of obesity in the UAE would be linked to the increase in prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of symptoms and risk of OSAS in women followed up in the primary health care (PHC) setting in Dubai and the relationship between obesity and sleep apnea in females in the UAE. DESIGN: Prospective observational community-based survey. SETTING: 20 primary health centers in Dubai. PARTICI-PANTS: Consecutive female patients who were older than 14 years, regardless of the reason of their visit. METHODS: In this prospective survey, trained medical nurse administered the Berlin Questionnaire (which includes questions about self-reported snoring, witnessed apneas, daytime sleepiness, hypertension, and obesity) to a consecutive random sample of female patients in the age group older than 14 years, attending the PHC center in Dubai Health Authority, Dubai, UAE, from September 2011 to March 2012. Based on the questionnaire, individuals were classified into high-risk and low-risk groups for OSAS. RESULTS: Based on the responses and measurement of the Berlin Questionnaire of 704 female subjects studied, 137 respondents met the criteria for the high-risk scoring. This gives a prevalence rate of 19.5% while the remainders of the participants were classified as low risk. The overall mean age of the high risk for OS

Background:Hyperarousal plays an essential role in the initiation and maintenance of insomnia,highlighting the need for a tool that measure the hyperarousal state during the early course of ***-sleep Arousal Scale(PSAS) is a self-report questionnaire to evaluate subjective pre-sleep arousal of *** aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the PSAS among patients with acute insomnia disorder(AID) using Rasch ***:Totally 170 patients with AID from 31 public hospitals in China were recruited and completed the *** psychometric properties of the PSAS were tested using Rasch analysis by Winsteps v5.***.1.0,including unidimensionality,local item independence,item fit,category diagnostics,reliability,itemperson maps and differential item functioning(DIF) by age and ***:According to Rasch analysis,somatic and cognitive subscales were unidimensional and basically demonstrated good item-fit statistics.4-point Likert scale may be more appropriate for *** items have a good reliability and *** gender and age bias were detected for the ***,the person arousal level is not well matched to item ***:The present study further reveals appropriate psychometric properties of the PSAS in patients with AID and provides suggestions for refinements and supplements to the PSAS.

Study Objectives This study aims to investigate the unique characteristics and clinical significance of the nocturnal sleep onset rapid eye movement period(nSOREMP) in the Chinese population with narcolepsy,enhancing our understanding and management of the disorder *** This retrospective analysis investigated narcolepsy in Chinese patients from six hospitals,using International Classification of sleep Disorders.A parallel retrospective analysis of the Chinese Clinical sleep Database(CCSD) focused on polysomnography(PSG) records was conducted to evaluate nSOREMP prevalence in other sleep *** The study found a 2.51% nSOREMP prevalence in other sleep disorders of *** differences in age,N2 and rapid eye movement(REM) percentages,REM latency,and various indexes were noted among narcolepsy with/without nSOREMP,and other sleep disorders with nSOREMP of *** prevalence in NT1 was 33.33% and in NT2,28.30%.Noteworthy disparities in NT1 included N2percentages,REM latency,and SOREMPs in multiple sleep latency test(MSLT).In NT2,differences were significant in age,sleep latency,N2 and REM latencies,arousal index,mean sleep latency in MSLT,and MSLT *** This study highlights nSOREMP's distinct characteristics in the Chinese *** exhibiting symptoms suggestive of the onset of narcolepsy are advised to undergo an MSLT,irrespective of the occurrence of SOREMP during nocturnal PSG.

Background: Up to 8% of women in their reproductive years are affected by Premenstral Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). sleep disturbances such as insomnia or hypersomnia are one of the DSM-IV-TR's defining criteria for the diagnosis of PMDD and are found in about 70% of women with the disorder. However, studies are lacking that specifically address the effects of PMDD on quality of sleep. Aim: This study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of Premenstrual DysphoricDisorder (PMDD) and its impact on sleep quality in female university students. Methods: We developed an 18-item PMDD scale based on The Diagnostic and StatistYcal Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) to diagnose PMDD in female university studentswho ranged in age from 18 to 30 years and had regular menstrual *** were categorized into a PMDD group or a No/PMDD group and sleep quality was compared between the two groups. The evaluation tool used to measure sleep quality was the Pittsburgh sleep o,uality Index (PSO, I). Results: The prevalence of PMDD in female universitystudents was 25.5%. Analysis of the PSO,I demonstrated that 80.5% of those in PMDD group had a PSO.I that scored >5, however, only 56.4% in the No/ PMDD grouphad a PSO,I that scored >5 0(x2=12.459, psleep problems. Lower sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, and sleep disturbance are common sleep problems among female university students with PMDD.

The nucleus accumbens(NAc) plays an important role in reward,pleasure,laughter,addiction,aggression,fear,and the placebo effect,however,its role in sleep-wake regulation remains *** D1 and D2 receptor(R) and adenosine A1R and A2AR are densely localized in the core and shell of NAc,and have been reported to be critically involved in sleep-wake regulation,we hypothesized that NAc might also play an important role in the regulation of sleep-wake *** the present study,we made cell body-specific lesions either in the core or shell of NAc by ibotenic acid,and observed the arousal effects of modafinil and caffeine,which have been reported to be mediated mainly by dopamine receptors and adenosine A2AR,*** with NAc core lesions exhibited a 26.5% increase in wakefulness,a weaker response in terms of sleep rebound after a 6-h sleep deprivation,and less arousal effects of modafinil or caffeine,compared with control ***,these lesioned rats showed a strong response to an ip saline injection,as displayed by a striking 165% prolongation in the latency to ***,the rats with NAc shell lesions showed a 17.4% increase in wakefulness,but the arousal effects of modafinil and caffeine in these lesioned rats were the same as that in control *** results indicate that both core and shell of the NAc are essential in sleep-wake regulation,with the core being more important than the shell.
