Application Progress of Aromatherapy in Perioperative Patients

State-dependent learning（SDL） is a well-known phenomenon in psychology, where the memory retrieval is facilitated only when the brain state matches the state of encoding. SDL associated amnesia is widely observed in "fugue" states induced by drug, mood, somnambulism and in the multiple personality syndrome. However, the neuronal basis of SDL remains unknown. Here we showed that MK-801, a NMDA receptor antagonist, induced SDL of contextual fear memory in mice. Such MK-801 induced SDL was associated with inhibition of mammillary body（MB） and hippocampus. Chemogenetic silencing of MB shifted the brain state similar to the MK-801 induced one to encode and recall the state-dependent memory by repressing activities in retrospenial cortex and inducing delta oscillations. Reconstitution of cortical delta waves facilitated memory retrieval in SDL. In addition, the neural activity in MB is repressed during slow wave sleep, creating the brain state for memory consolidation in neocortex. Thereby, we posit the MB-regulated activity level of hippocampus and neocortex is one of the major neural mechanisms underlying the state-dependent memory retrieval.

Aromatherapy is a sort of natural therapy for body maintenanceusing essential oils and vegetable oils extracted from natural plants. It belongsto the category of homeopathy. Aromatherapy combines the dual functions ofart and treatment, comprehensively considers the needs of human physiologyand psychology, and is widely used in the field of medical care. Aromatherapyis one of the complementary and alternative treatments extensively studiedat home and abroad. It has a relieving effect on postoperative pain, sleepdisturbance, nausea, vomiting and preoperative anxiety, and is an importantintervention in perioperative care. A large number of research data show thatfor a long time, the application of aromatherapy is an effective alternativeand auxiliary medical means, which can improve people’s comfort and solvemany health problems. There are a lot of controversies about the possiblerisks and safety of aromatherapy, but in general, compared with traditionaldrugs for the treatment of same diseases, aromatherapy is safe and has fewrecords of serious side effects. This review intends to provide an overview ofaromatherapy and its application status in the perioperative period, in orderto provide a reference for improving the comfort and quality of life of patientsin the perioperative period.

Obstructive sleep apnea(OSA)is a serious type of sleep disorder that can lead to cardiometabolic and neurocognitive *** utilized smart device-based photoplethysmography technology to collect sleep data from the Chinese population from 2019 to *** lag nonlinear models combined with a generalized nonlinear model or a linear mixed effects model were used to investigate the shortterm associations between daily temperature and indicators of OSA *** included a total of 6,232,056 d of sleep monitoring data from 51,842 participants with moderate to severe risk of OSA from 313 Chinese *** relationships between ambient temperature and OSA exacerbation,apneahypopnea index(AHI),and minimum oxygen saturation(MinSpO_(2))were almost linear and present only on the same *** temperatures were associated with a greater risk of OSA exacerbation,with an 8.4%(95%confidence interval(CI):7.6%–9.3%)increase per 10℃increase in temperature.A 10℃increase in daily temperature corresponded to an AHI increase of 0.70 events/h(95%CI:0.65–0.76)and a MinSpO_(2)decrease of 0.18%(95%CI:0.16%–0.19%).Exposure to elevated temperatures during the night can also lead to adverse *** effects of higher temperatures on OSA severity were stronger among men,participants with a body mass index24 kg/m2,those aged 45 years and older,individuals with a history of hypertension and diabetes,and during the cold *** large-scale,nationwide,longitudinal study provides robust evidence suggesting that higher ambient temperatures may immediately worsen OSA.

Objective Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is closely related to obesity, insulin resistance and inflammation. Secreted frizzled-related protein 5 (SFRP5) is a recently discovered adipokine. It is involved in insulin resistance and inflammation in obesity. This study aimed at evaluating the association between SFRP5and sleeping characteristics as well as biochemical parameters of OSA *** This was a prospective case control study. Nondiabetic OSA patients and controls were consecutively recruited and divided into three groups: OSA group, apnea–hypopnea Index (AHI)≥5/h; healthy controls with normal body mass index (BMI); obese controls without OSA, and BMI > 24.0 kg/m2. All participants underwent polysomnography (PSG). Plasma SFRP5 was examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Blood biochemical examinations, including fasting blood glucose (FBG), lipid profile, hypersensitive Creactive protein (hsCRP), were performed early in the morning after PSG. Patients with severe OSA were treated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP), and plasma SFRP5 was repeatedly measured for *** Sixty-eight subjects were enrolled in the study, including 38 patients of OSA, whose medium AHI was 58.70 /h (36.63, 71.15), 20 obese controls, and 10 healthy controls. The plasma SFRP5 level of OSA patients was not significantly different from that of healthy controls or obese controls. In OSA patients, SFRP5 level correlated positively with triglyceride level (r=0.447, P=0.005) and negatively with LDL-cholesterol level and HDLcholesterol level (r=?0.472 and P=0.003; r=?0.478 and P=0.002; respectively). SFRP5 level was not found correlating with FBG, AHI, or any of nocturnal hypoxia parameters. Background Excessive daytime sleepiness （EDS） is often associated with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome （OSAHS） and contributes to a number of comorbidities in these patients. Therefore, early detection of EDS is critical in disease management. We examined the association between Epworth sleepiness Scale （ESS） and multiple sleep latency test （MSLT） and diagnostic accuracy of ESS in assessing EDS in OSAHS patients. Methods The ESS, MSLT and overnight polysomnography were administered to 107 Chinese patients to assess EDS and its correlations with polysomnographic parameters. The diagnostic accuracy of ESS in classifying EDS （mean sleep latency （MSL）〈10 minutes） was evaluated by calculating the area under ROC curve. Results As the severity of OSAHS increased, MSL decreased with increase in ESS score. Conversely, patients with worsening EDS （shorter MSL） were characterized by advanced nocturnal hypoxaemia and sleep disruption compared to those with normal MSL, suggesting EDS is associated with more severe OSAHS. There was a negative correlation between ESS score and MSL and both moderately correlated with some polysomnographic nocturnal hypoxaemic parameters. The area under ROC curve of ESS for identifying EDS was 0.80 （95% CI： 0.71 to 0.88） and ESS score 〉12 provided the best predictive value with a sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 69%. Conclusion The ESS score moderately correlates with MSL and our ROC study supports ESS as a screening strategy for assessing EDS in OSAHS.

BACKGROUND Studies on varicose veins have focused its effects on physical function;however,whether nonsurgical treatments alter muscle oxygenation or physical function remains ***,the differences in such functions between individuals with varicose veins and healthy individuals remain *** To investigate changes in physical function and the quality of life(QOL)following nonsurgical treatment of patients with varicose veins and determine the changes in their muscle oxygenation during *** We enrolled 37 participants(those with varicose veins,n=17;healthy individuals,n=20).We performed the following measurements pre-and post-nonsurgical treatment in the varicose vein patients and healthy individuals:Calf muscle oxygenation during the two-minute step test,open eyes one-leg stance,30 s sit-to-stand test,visual analog scale(VAS)for pain,Pittsburgh sleep quality index,physical activity assessment,and QOL *** Varicose veins patients and healthy individuals differ in most variables(physical function,sleep quality,and QOL).Varicose veins patients showed significant differences between pre-and post-nonsurgical treatment—results in the 30 sit-to-stand test[14.41(2.45)to 16.35(4.11),P=0.018],two-minute step test[162.29(25.98)to 170.65(23.80),P=0.037],VAS for pain[5.35(1.90)to 3.88(1.73),P=0.004],and QOL[39.34(19.98)to 26.69(17.02),P=0.005];however,no significant difference was observed for muscle *** Nonsurgical treatment improved lower extremity function and QOL in varicose veins patients,bringing their condition close to that of healthy *** studies should include patients with severe varicose veins requiring surgery to confirm our findings.

Coronavirus disease 2019 is declared as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization. On March 22, 2020, the Moroccan government declared a health emergency and also confinement. This study aimed to clarify the adverse effects of confinement on children and to analyze the factors influencing these effects. Our study concerns 495 families with 973 children specifying their activities during confinement, we find that 35% of children spend more than 3 hours on the TV, 29% engaged with their smartphones and 14% playing video games. 76% also had the opportunity to be involved in distance learning. Among consequences of home confinement, there is an increase in behavioral problems from 14% to 31% at the end of the 2nd week of confinement. Overall 77% experienced difficulties such as emotional disturbance, behavioral problems as well as sleep and eating disturbance. The under 6 aged children appeared to be more vulnerable to confinement. 75% of parents, however, noted that confinement also afforded the opportunity to improve relationship with their children. This is an important study that contributes to discussion and further studies on adverse effects of home confinement for children during epidemics. This should lead to further identification of activities that may lead to minimizing the adverse consequences of the experience. Examples might be family outings into places that do not involve meeting other people with close contacts. Distance learning might also be enriched with virtual meetings and discussions of schoolmates that may also involve teachers and parents.
