On the role of geometry in geo-localization

Consider the geo-localization task of finding the pose of a camera in a large 3 D scene from a single image.Most existing CNN-based methods use as input textured images.We aim to experimentally explore whether texture and correlation between nearby images are necessary in a CNN-based solution for the geo-localization task.To do so,we consider lean images,textureless projections of a simple 3 D model of a city.They only contain information related to the geometry of the scene viewed(edges,faces,and relative depth).The main contributions of this paper are:(i)to demonstrate the ability of CNNs to recover camera pose using lean images;and(ii)to provide insight into the role of geometry in the CNN learning process.

The Computational Visual Media （CVM） conference series is intended to provide a major international forum for exchanging novel research ideas and significant computational methods that either underpin or apply visual media. The primary goal is to promote cross-disciplinary research to amalgamate aspects of computer graphics, computer vision, machine learning, image and video processing, visualization and geometric computing. The main topics of interest to CVM include classification, composition, retrieval, synthesis, cognition and understanding of visual media （e.g., images, video, 3D geometry）.

CAPT:Context-Aware Provenance Tracing for Attack Investigation

APT attacks are prolonged and have multiple stages, and they usually utilize zero-day or one-day exploits to be penetrating and stealthy. Among all kinds of security techniques, provenance tracing is regarded as an important approach to attack investigation, as it discloses the root cause, the attacking path, and the results of attacks. However, existing techniques either suffer from the limitation of only focusing on the log type, or are highly susceptible to attacks, which hinder their applications in investigating APT attacks. We present CAPT, a context-aware provenance tracing system that leverages the advantages of virtualization technologies to transparently collect system events and network events out of the target machine, and processes them in the specific host which introduces no space cost to the target. CAPT utilizes the contexts of collected events to bridge the gap between them, and provides a panoramic view to the attack investigation. Our evaluation results show that CAPT achieves the effective provenance tracing to the attack cases, and it only produces 0.21 MB overhead in 8 hours. With our newly-developed technology, we keep the run-time overhead averages less than 4%.

Design and implementation of a portable TPM scheme for general-purpose trusted computing based on efi

In today＇s globalized digital world, networkbased, mobile, and interactive collaborations have enabled work platforms of personal computers to cross multiple geographical boundaries. The new requirements of privacy-preservation, sensitive information sharing, portability, remote attestation, and robust security create new problems in system design and implementation. There are critical demands for highly secure work platforms and security enhancing mechanisms for ensuring privacy protection, component integrity, sealed storage, and remote attestation of platforms. Trusted computing is a promising technology for enhancing the security of a platform using a trusted platform module （TPM）. TPM is a tamper-resistant microcontroller designed to provide robust security capabilities for computing platforms. It typically is affixed to the motherboard with a low pin count （LPC） bus. However, it limited in that TPM cannot be used directly in current common personal computers （PCs）, and TPM is not flexible and portable enough to be used in different platforms because of its interface with the PC and its certificate and key structure. For these reasons, we propose a portable trusted platform module （PTPM） scheme to build a trusted platform for the common PC based on a single cryptographic chip with a universal serial bus （USB） interface and extensible firmware interface （efi）, by which platforms can get a similar degree of security protection in general-purpose systems. We show the structure of certificates and keys, which can bind to platforms via a PTPM and provide users with portability and flexibility in different platforms while still allowing the user and platform to be protected and attested. The implementation of prototype system is described in detail and the performance of the PTPM on cryptographic operations and time-costs of the system bootstrap are evaluated and analyzed.
