Blastocystis incidence, spontaneous clearance, persistence and risk factors in a rural community in thailand: A prospective cohort study

Objective: To investigate the incidence, spontaneous clearance, persistence and risk factors of Blastocystis infection in a rural community in ***: In February 2016, a cohort study was conducted in a rural community of thailand. Baseline information of intestinal parasitic infections and follow-up visits were conducted. Blastocystis infection was detected in stool samples examined with short-term in vitro cultivation using Jones’ medium supplemented with 10% horse serum. Participants were tested for Blastocystis infection at every study visit. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to evaluate co-variates to determine the incidence of Blastocystis infection. Results: Of 733 enrolled participants, 57(7.78%) were positive and 676(92.22%) were negative for Blastocystis infection. All 676 participants were followed-up for Blastocystis infection between December 2016 and January 2018. In all, 52 of 482 cases(10.79%) comprised individual Blastocystis infection. The incidence density rates of Blastocystis infection, of spontaneous clearance of the disease and of persistent infection were 8.13, 63.14 and 38.70 per 1 000 person-months of follow-up, respectively. Our multivariate analysis revealed that opened defecation in fields or bushes(HR=4.8;95% CI=2.1-10.4, P<0.001), raising cows(HR=2.8;95% CI=1.1-7.1, P=0.032), not washing hands after animal contact(HR=2.1;95% CI=1.0-4.2, P=0.044) and presenting symptoms of nausea or vomiting(HR=2.3;95% CI=1.0-5.3, P=0.047) were predictive associated risks for the incidence of Blastocystis infection. Conclusions: Our study indicates that the best way to prevent Blastocystis infection can be by maintaining good personal hygiene, hand washing after animal contact and improving sanitary facilities.

A preliminary study of using maleic anhydride copolymer for protein binding has been carried out. The polymeric films were prepared by compression of the purified resin and annealing the film to induce efficient back formation of the anhydride groups. The properties of the film surface were analyzed by attenuated total reflection Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurements. The protein content was determined by Bradford assay. To obtain optimum conditions, immersion time for protein binding was examined. Results revealed that proteins can be successfully immobilized onto the film surface via covalent linkage. The efficiency of the covalent binding of the extractable protein to maleic anhydride-polyethylene film was estimated at 69.87 ug/cm2, although the film had low anhydride content （3%） on the surface.

Facile preparation of polybenzoxazine-based carbon microspheres with nitrogen functionalities:effects of mixed solvents on pore structure and supercapacitive performance

In this study,polybenzoxazine(PBZ)-based carbon microspheres were prepared via a facile method using a mixture of formaldehyde(F)and dimethylformamide(DMF)as the *** PBZ microspheres were successfully obtained at the F/DMF weight ratios of 0.4 and *** microspheres exhibited high nitrogen contents after *** microstructures of all the samples showed an amorphous phase and a partial graphitic *** porous carbon with the F/DMF ratio of 0.4 showed significantly higher specific capacitance(275.1 F·g^-1)than the reference carbon(198.9 F·g^-1)at 0.05 A-g This can be attributed to the synergistic electrical double-layer capacitor and pseudo-capacitor behaviors of the porous carbon with the F/DMF ratio of *** presence of nitrogen/oxygen functionalities induced pseudo-capacitance in the microspheres,and hence increased their total specific *** activation with CO2,the specific surface area of the carbon microspheres with the F/DMF ratio of 0.4 increased from 349 to 859 m^2•g^-1 and the specific capacitance increased to 424.7 F·g^-1 This value is approximately two times higher than that of the reference *** results indicated that the F/DMF ratio of 0.4 was suitable for preparing carbon microspheres with good supercapacitive *** nitrogen/oxygen functionalities and high specific surface area of the microspheres were responsible for their high capacitance.

Carbon dioxide adsorption/desorption performance of single-and blended-amines-impregnated MCM-41 mesoporous silica in post-combustion carbon capture

High-surface-area,hexagonal-structured mesoporous silica,MCM-41,was synthesized and wet impregnated with three different amines of 2-(ethylamino)ethanol(EAE),ethylenediamine(EDA),and tetraethylenepentamine(TEPA)for use as solid adsorbents in post-combustion CO_(2) capture *** CO_(2) adsorption test was performed at 25℃and atmospheric pressure using 15/85 vol%of CO_(2)/N2 at a 20-mL/minute flow *** was carried out at 100℃under 20 mL/minute of N2 *** results show that the capacity and rate of CO_(2) adsorption obtained from all the amine-modified adsorbents were significantly increased with increasing amine loading due to carbamate *** efficiency and heat duty for regeneration were also affected by the amount of amine *** more stable the carbamate produced,the higher the energy was *** exhibited the highest adsorption-desorption performance at 60 wt%amines used for *** EAE/TEPA at different weight ratios at a total concentration at 60 wt%amines was impregnated on MCM-41 *** impregnated with 50%/10%of EAE/TEPA showed the best performance of 4.25 mmolCO_(2)/g at a high adsorption rate,a low heat duty of 12 kJ/mmolCO_(2) and with 9.4%reduction of regeneration efficiency after five repeated adsorption-desorption cycles.

Rate of anticoagulant use, and factors associated with not prescribing anticoagulant in older Thai adults with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: A multicenter registry

Objectives To investigate the rate of anticoagulant use,the reasons for not prescribing anticoagulant,and the factors associated with non-prescription of anticoagulant in older Thai adults with non-valvular atrial *** A multicenter registry of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation was conducted during 2014 to 2017 in ***,medical history,antithrombotic medication,non-antithrombotic medication,and laboratory data were collected and *** were compared between the older adult (≥ 65 years) and younger adult (< 65 years) *** reasons why anticoagulant was not prescribed were collected,and predictive factors were *** A total of 3218 patients (1873 males) with an average age of 67.3 ± 11.3 years were *** two-thirds (61.0%) of patients were in the older adult *** was prescribed in 2422 patients (75.3%): 81.4% in the older adult group and 65.7% in the younger adult *** three main reasons for not prescribing anticoagulant were already taking antiplatelets,patient refusal,and bleeding *** reasons were more common in older adults as compared to younger *** analysis revealed current use of antiplatelets to be the most important factor that predict the non-prescription of anticoagulant in older *** The prevalence of anticoagulant prescription among older Thai adults with atrial fibrillation is 81.4%.Taking antiplatelet drugs was found to be the strongest reason that predicts the non-prescription of anticoagulant in this patient population.A guideline should be developed to optimize the use of anticoagulant and antiplatelet in older adults.
