The integration between vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and metasurfaces has been demonstrated to enable on-chip high-angle illumination for total internal reflection and dark-field microscopy. Such an ultracompact combined laser-beam shaper system provides a versatile illumination module for high-contrast imaging, thus leveraging biophotonics and lab-on-a-chip devices and facilitating life-science applications.

Deep learning(DL),which includes deep reinforcement learning(DRL),holds great promise for carrying out real-world tasks that human minds seem to cope with quite *** promise is already delivering extremely impressive results in a variety of ***,while DL-enabled systems achieve excellent performance,they are far from *** has been demonstrated,in several domains,that DL systems can err when they encounter cases they had not hitherto ***,the opacity of the produced agents makes it difficult to explain their behavior and ensure that they adhere to various requirements posed by human *** the other end of the software development spectrum of methods,behavioral programming(BP) facilitates orderly system development using self-standing executable modules aligned with how humans intuitively describe desired system *** this paper,we elaborate on different approaches for combining DRL with BP and,more generally,machine learning(ML) with executable specifications(ES).We begin by defining a framework for studying the various approaches,which can also be used to study new emerging approaches not covered *** then briefly review state-of-the-art approaches to integrating ML with ES,continue with a focus on DRL,and then present the merits of integrating ML with *** conclude with guidelines on how this categorization can be used in decision making in system development,and outline future research challenges.

With the increasing emergence of bacterial infections,especially multidrug-resistant(MDR)bacteria,poses an urgent *** study demonstrated a novel multifunctional nanotheranostics platform developed by the strategic integration of both in-situ bio-assembly imaging and target bacteria *** the introduction of copper ions into bacteria,the Cu^(2+)could spontaneously bio-selfassembled into a multifunctional copper nanoclusters(NCs)which efficiently enhanced epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG)uptake into *** visualizing the bacteria,the developed theranostic nanoplatform exhibited highly efficient disinfection activities with negligible side effects as reflected by higher cell viability and insignificant hemolytic ***,the exosomal formulation of EGCG integrated with Cu^(2+)showed an increased intracellular antibacterial activity,which could eliminate most of the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)phagocytosed by macrophages,guide macrophages toward M2-like phenotype polarization and alleviate inflammation,without exhibiting obvious cytotoxicity on host *** regimen could be viewed as an effective strategy for the sterilization of intractable bacterial infections.

Nonlinear Violence in Nonlinear Oscillations at High Energy

This paper focuses on the characteristics of solutions of nonlinear oscillatory systems in the limit of very high oscillation energy, E;specifically, systems, in which the nonlinear driving force grows with energy much faster for x(t) close to the turning point, a(E), than at any position, x(t), that is not too close to a(E). This behavior dominates important aspects of the solutions. It will be called “nonlinear violence”. In the vicinity of a turning point, the solution of a nonlinear oscillatory systems that is affected by nonlinear violence exhibits the characteristics of boundary-layer behavior (independently of whether the equation of motion of the system can or cannot be cast in the traditional form of a boundary-layer problem.): close to a(E), x(t) varies very rapidly over a short time interval (which vanishes for E → ∞). In traditional boundary layer systems this would be called the “inner” solution. Outside this interval, x(t) soon evolves into a moderate profile (e.g. linear in time, or constant)—the “outer” solution. In (1 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear energy-conserving oscillators, if the solution is reflection-invariant, nonlinear violence determines the characteristics of the whole solution. For large families of nonlinear oscillatory systems, as E → ∞, the solutions for x(t) tend to common, indistinguishable profiles, such as periodic saw-tooth profiles or step-functions. If such profiles are observed experimentally in high-energy oscillations, it may be difficult to decipher the dynamical equations that govern the motion. The solution of motion in a central field with a non-zero angular momentum exhibits extremely fast rotation around a turning point that is affected by nonlinear violence. This provides an example for the possibility of interesting phenomena in (1 + 2)-dimensional oscillatory systems.

Introduction: Collagen is the primary structural protein fibroblasts produce in the skin’s extracellular matrix. Infiltration of neutrophils into the epidermis and dermis by exposure to UV causes collagen damage and contributes to photoaging. Methods: To study the combined effect of Lumenato and ceramide in preventing collagen-1 damage induced by phagocytes, we used co-cultures of normal human dermal fibroblasts (fibroblasts) and activated human neutrophils. The present study aimed to determine the protective effect of the combination of Lumenato and ceramide on fibroblast collagen-1 damage induced by neutrophils. Results: Lumenato (in the range of 6.5 - 208 μg/ml) or ceramide (in the range of 0.1 - 50 μM) inhibited the production of superoxides and MPO by TNFα-stimulated neutrophils, as well as the production of NO by LPS-stimulated macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. The combinations of Lumenato and ceramide, in low concentrations, caused synergistic prevention of fibroblasts’ collagen-1 damage induced by TNFα-activated neutrophils, detected by fluorescence immunostaining and WB analysis. MPO activity in the supernatants of the co-cultures was also synergistically inhibited. Adding Lumenato or ceramide singly or in combinations in these low concentrations to the fibroblast cultures did not affect the expression of collagen-1. The combinations of Lumenato or ceramide in these concentrations also caused a synergistic inhibition of NO production by activated macrophages. Conclusions: The results suggest that combining low concentrations of Lumenato and ceramide results in synergistic protection against fibroblasts’ collagen-1 damage induced by neutrophils, thus indicating their possible potential for enhanced skin health.

Background:Infectious keratitis is a major cause of global *** tested whether standalone photoactivated chromophore corneal cross-linking(PACK-CXL)may be an efective frst-line treatment in early to moderate infectious keratitis,compared with standard antimicrobial ***:This is a randomized,controlled,multinational phase 3 clinical *** in fve centers in Egypt,India,Iran,Israel,and China,aged≥18 years,with infectious keratitis of presumed bacterial,fungal,or mixed origin,were randomly assigned(1:1)to PACK-CXL,or antimicrobial *** measures included healing,defned as time to re-epithelialization of the corneal epithelial defect in the absence of infammatory activity in the anterior chamber and clearance of stromal *** success was defned as the complete resolution of signs of ***:Between July 21,2016,and March 4,2020,participants were randomly assigned to receive PACK-CXL(n=18)or antimicrobial therapy per American Academy of Ophthalmology(AAO)guidelines(n=21).No participants were lost to *** eyes were excluded from the epithelialization time analysis due to treatment failure:two in the antimicrobial therapy group,and two in the PACK-CXL *** rates were 88.9%(16/18 patients)in the PACK-CXL group and 90.5%(19/21 patients)in the medication *** was no signifcant diference in time to complete corneal re-epithelialization(P=0.828)between both treatment ***:PACK-CXL may be an alternative to antimicrobial drugs for frst-line and standalone treatment of early to moderate infectious keratitis of bacterial or fungal origin.

We tested for the effects of latitude and geographic range size(GRS)on body size,leg length,and sexual size dimorphism(SSD)across 103 species ofﬂeas,taking into account phylogenetic between-species *** the data on body size were combined for males and females,the positive correlation between body size and latitude,but not GRS,was *** the analysis was restricted to one sex only,the effect of latitude appeared to be non-signiﬁcant for females,whereas male body size increased with an increase in ***ﬁc body size variation was not associated with either the latitude or the latitudinal span of the geographic range,independently of which data subset was *** evidence of association between size-independent tibia length and latitude was found for either females,males,or both sexes *** degree of SSD decreased with a decrease in latitude but was not affected by *** conclude that macroecological patterns might be manifested differently in males and *** should be kept in mind while searching for these patterns.

Three-dimensional graphene foams(GFs)benefit from a large surface area and unique physical *** present here the first-ever miniaturized GF-based *** developed a simple yet reliable fabrication process,in which GFs are synthesized and assembled on a cavity to form suspended GF *** electrostatically excited these devices and analyzed their resonance and ring-down *** observed significant energy dissipation,as the quality factor of the devices was in the order of several ***,we investigated the influence of temperature on the operation of the devices and found that high temperatures mechanically soften the resonators but also considerably enhance energy ***,our devices demonstrated a mode-coupling of a resonance mode and a mode having twice its ***,this work paves the way toward the development of novel GF resonators that could be integrated into future devices,such as GF-based nano-electromechanical sensors,electrical circuits,and oscillators.
