Stretching characteristics and its dynamic significance of the northern continental margin of South China Sea

To investigate the thinning of the whole crust, and the contribution of the upper versus lower crust to the stretching since Cenozoic, we calculated the stretching factor of the northern margin of South China Sea with data such as whole crustal thickness, depth of Cenozoic sedimentary basement and the horizontal displacement of faults. An isometric line drawing on whole crustal stretching factor is then obtained. Along the seismic Line 1530 in Baiyun sag, we also calculated the stretching factors of the upper and lower crust. The results suggest that the whole crustal thickness decreases seaward while the whole crustal stretching factor increases from shelf to slope. The Moho upwells highest beneath where the crust is thinned most. The value of the whole crustal stretching factor ranges from 1.5 to 6. Two areas were thinned intensely: the center of Yinggehai Basin, and the Baiyun sag in the Pearl River Mouth Basin. The calculation of the upper and lower crustal stretching factors from DSP1530 in Baiyun sag shows that the original crust of Baiyun sag should be thinned before deformation. Its pre-Cenozoic evolution as well as tectonic position during Cenozoic might be responsible for that.

Heavy Metal-Polluted Aerosols Collected at a Rural Site,Northwest China

Daily samples of aerosol（n=27） were collected from September 21 st to October 4th, 2013 in Fukang（44.17°N, 88.45°E, 475 m a.s.l.）, Xinjiang, Northwest China. The enrichment factors（EFc） of selected 49 elements showed that the aerosols had extremely high concentrations of heavy metals, probably indicating their anthropogenic origins. Morphology of individual aerosol particles was determined by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Based on morphology and elemental composition, the particles were clustered into three dominant types：（Ⅰ） crustal originated particles： Si/Al-rich particles（36%） and Si/Fe-rich particles（24%）;（Ⅱ） mixed source particles; and（Ⅲ） pollution derived particles： Pb-rich particles（10%）. The backward trajectories were calculated using the HYSPLIT model, and the results indicated the different anthropogenic sources for heavy metals in Fukang aerosols. Air mass from north was identified as the most polluted source when compared to south and west.

In flowering plants, self-incompatibility （SI） serves as an important intraspecific reproductive barrier to promote outbreeding. In species from the Solanaceae, Plantaginaceae and Rosaceae, S-RNase and SLF （S-locus F-box） proteins have been shown to control the female and male specificity of SI, respectively. However, little is known about structure features of the SLF protein apart from its conserved F-box domain. Here we show that the SLF C-terminal region possesses a novel ubiquitin-binding domain （UBD） structure conserved among the SLF protein family. By using an ex vivo system of Nicotiana benthamiana, we found that the UBD mediates the SLF protein turnover by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Furthermore, we detected that the SLF protein was directly involved in S-RNase degradation. Taken together, our results provide a novel insight into the SLF structure and highlight a potential role of SLF protein stability and degradation in S-RNase-based self-incompatibility.

The integration of gallium nitride(GaN)nanowire light-emitting diodes(nanoLEDs)on flexible substrates offers opportunities for applications beyond rigid solid-state lighting(e.g.,for wearable optoelectronics and bendable inorganic displays).Here,we report on a fast physical transfer route based on femtosecond laser lift-off(fs-LLO)to realize wafer-scale top–down GaN nanoLED arrays on unconventional *** with photolithography and hybrid etching processes,we successfully transferred GaN blue nanoLEDs from a full two-inch sapphire substrate onto a flexible copper(Cu)foil with a high nanowire density(~107 wires/cm2),transfer yield(~99.5%),and *** nanoanalytical measurements were conducted to evaluate the performance and limitations of the fs-LLO technique as well as to gain insights into physical material properties such as strain relaxation and assess the maturity of the transfer *** work could enable the easy recycling of native growth substrates and inspire the development of large-scale hybrid GaN nanowire optoelectronic devices by solely employing standard epitaxial LED wafers(i.e.,customized LED wafers with additional embedded sacrificial materials and a complicated growth process are not required).

A natural hazard-related disaster event often causes a series of secondary disasters, forming a disaster chain. Modeling the evolution of disaster chains in multihazard scenarios is crucial for risk governance and urban resilience. However, existing multi-hazard models are limited by complex model design and fixed disaster types, making it impossible to ensure flexible reactions to complex and diverse scenarios. This study presents a disaster management system for disaster model service chain(DMSC) to implement interoperable multi-hazard modeling. To achieve efficient model interaction in the DMSC, a management module is designed to normalize heterogeneous single-hazard models based on disaster system theory and the Open Geospatial Consortium standards, enabling them to be accessible,reusable, and interoperable. The normalized models are then adaptively orchestrated through an orchestration module to establish optimal executable DMSCs for different multihazard scenarios. Taking an earthquake disaster chain as a case study, we demonstrate that the disaster management system shows stable and flexible performance for multihazard modeling.

In the present study,we show that time-consuming manual tuning of parameters in the Rietveld method,one of the most frequently used crystal structure analysis methods in materials science,can be automated by considering the entire trial-and-error process as a blackbox optimisation *** automation is successfully achieved using Bayesian optimisation,which outperforms both a human expert and an expert-system type automation despite the absence of *** approach stabilises the analysis quality by eliminating human-origin variance and bias,and can be applied to various analysis methods in other areas which also suffer from similar tiresome and unsystematic manual tuning of extrinsic parameters and human-origin variance and bias.

Estimation of the Reflection of Internal Tides on a Slope

Reflection occurs when internal tides impact on a steep continental slope. Separating reflected internal tide signals from incident ones is crucial to develop the parameterization of internal tide-driven turbulent mixing on the continental slopes. In this study, the performances of three different methods for estimating internal tide reflections are examined by using two different cases. The Hilbert transform-based method is found to be more suitable than two other methods for both cases considered in this study. The two other methods are effective for westward-propagating mode-1 internal tides impacting a slope, but inappropriate in the case where internal tides radiate from a Gaussian ridge impact the slope because of their inaccurate estimation of incident internal tides in the latter case. Such inaccurate estimation further influences the extraction of reflected signals and calculation of the reflected and cross term of energy fluxes. In addition, it should be noted that, due to the use of filtering, the method based on Hilbert transform may result in slight bias when assessing the incident and reflected signals near topographic features.

Crustal Structure and Extension from Slope to Deepsea Basin in the Northern South China Sea

The newly acquired long-cable multi-channel seismic （MCS） lines were used to study the crustal structure and extension in an NW-SE elongated 150 km by 260 km strip from the slope to the deepsea basin in the northern South China Sea （SCS）. These profiles are of good penetration that Moho is recognizable in -70% length of the lines. Seismostratigraphic interpretation and time-depth conversion were conducted. A power function D = ath ＋ c was used in the time-depth conversion, which avoided the under- or over-estimation of the depths of deep-seated interfaces by cubic or quadratic polynomial functions. Contour maps of basement depth, Moho depth, crustal thickness, and crustal stretching factor were obtained for the study area. In the dip direction, the Mobo depth decreases stepwisely from 28 km in the outer shelf southwards to 19, 15, and 12 km in the deepsea basin, with ramps at the shelf break, lower slope, and the continent ocean boundary （COB）, respectively. Accordingly, the crustal thickness decreased southwards from 25 to 15, 13, and 7 km, respectively. Under the center of the Baiyun （白云） sag, the crust thins significantly to 〈 7 km. The crustal stretching factor βc was calculated by assuming the original crust thickness of 30 km. In the centers of the Baiyun sag, βc exceeds 5. Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic activities show a general trend of intensifying towards the COB. An important finding of this study is the along-strike variation of the crustal structure. A Moho rise extends from the COB NW-ward until the shelf break, about 170 km long and 50-100 km wide, with Moho depth 〈 20 km. This is called the Baiyun Moho Nose, which is bounded to the east, west, and north by belts of high Moho gradients indicative of crustal or even lithospheric faults. Improved Circularity Metrology of Small Cylindrical Workpieces by the Segmenting-stitching Technique

To address the alignment and measuring force problem in the segmenting-stitching technique for the circularity metrology of small cylindrical workpieces(diameter less than 1.5 mm and length less than 10 mm),a magnet combination jig method is proposed.A small round magnet is attached between the round magnetic jig and small cylinder,and the other end of the small cylindrical workpiece is attached to some cylindrical ***,the smaller cylinder can be put in the V-groove and measured successfully with the magnet *** verifying the advantage of the magnet combination jig,four measurement quality evaluations are proposed:the circumferential deviation of neighbor arc contours,radial deviation of neighbor arc contours,angle of inclination between the V-groove and small cylinder,and curvature of the obtained *** results show that the matching coefficient is enhanced by 98%,the Euclidean distance of overlap parts of neighbor arc contours is reduced by 68%,the position error is reduced 27%,and the average curvature of the arc contours is *** can be concluded that the measuring quality can be enhanced prominently by this magnet combination method for the segmenting-stitching method.
