multivariate Geostatistical model for Groundwater Constituents in texas

Although many studies have explored the quality of texas groundwater, very few have investigated the concurrent distributions of more than one pollutant, which provides insight on the temporal and spatial behavior of constituents within and between aquifers. The purpose of this research is to study the multivariate spatial patterns of seven health-related texas groundwater constituents, which are calcium (Ca), chloride (Cl), nitrate (NO3), sodium (Na), magnesium (mg), sulfate (SO4), and potassium (K). Data is extracted from texas Water Development Board’s database including nine years: 2000 through 2008. A multivariate geostatistical model was developed to examine the interactions between the constituents. The model had seven dependent variables—one for each of the constituents, and five independent variables: altitude, latitude, longitude, major aquifer and water level. Exploratory analyses show that the data has no temporal patterns, but hold spatial patterns as well as intrinsic correlation. The intrinsic correlation allowed for the use of a Kronecker form for the covariance matrix. The model was validated with a split-sample. Estimates of iteratively re-weighted generalized least squares converged after four iterations. matern covariance function estimates are zero nugget, practical range is 44 miles, 0.8340 variance and kappa was fixed at 2. To show that our assumptions are reasonable and the choice of the model is appropriate, we perform residual validation and universal kriging. moreover, prediction maps for the seven constituents are estimated from new locations data. The results point to an alarmingly increasing levels of these constituents’ concentrations, which calls for more intensive monitoring and groundwater management.

Straighthead and Agronomy Characters Testing for Selected Parent Lines and Hybrid Combinations at UAPB in 2011-2012

Straighthead disease is a physiological disorder in rice and the most widespread non-fungal disease of the U.S. straighthead greatly reduces rice yield. Straighthead studies were most conducted in the artificial field which was Arsenic amendment plots due to the similarity of straighthead symptoms of Arsenic damage. To evaluate the straighthead disease resistance in natural condition, 46 rice lines, including 24 inbred lines and 22 hybrid combinations which were developed from breading program, were chosen for straighthead and agronomy characters testing in a native soil where straighthead naturally induced in the past years at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), Arkansas in 2011 and 2012. The straighthead of rice were rated from 0 to 9 levels, and 0 was the least straighthead disorder and 9 was the most severe straighthead disorder. Cocodrie (CCDR) was used as the check in this study. The results of 2011 showed that the yields of 8 entries were higher than the check CCDR. The straighthead scores of these 8 entries were 0 - 1 which indicated their resistance to straighthead. The rest of the entries had lower yields than check CCDR with straighthead scores 5 - 6 which indicated their moderate susceptibility to straighthead. The yields were negatively related to the straighthead scores (r = -0.9178, P moderately resistant to straighthead. The rest 3 hybrids and 4 inbred entries had lower yields than the check and their straighthead scores were 5 - 6 which indicated their moderately susceptible to straighthead. Plasma membrane-associated abscisic acid(ABA)signal transduction is an integral part of ABA *** C2-domain ABA-related(CAR)proteins play important roles in the recruitment of ABA receptors to the plasma membrane to facilitate ABA ***,how CAR proteins are regulated remains *** this study,we conducted a genetic screen for mutants with altered leaf transpiration and identified an uncharacterized protein,LOWER TEmPERATURE 1(LOT1),which regulates the dynamic localization and stability of CAR *** lotimutant had a lower leaf temperature as compared with the wild type due to higher *** found that LOT1 physically interacts with CAR9,and ABA reduces LOT1-CAR9 interaction in the nucleus,likely via Ca^2+,resulting in increased localization of CAR9 to the plasma *** further found that the stability of CAR9 is affected by LOT1 less CAR9 proteins were accumulated and more were ubiquitinated in *** the lot1 car9 and/of f car9 mutants were hyposerisitive to ABA,the hyposensitive phenotype of loticould be rescued by CAR9 ***,our study reveals that LOT1 regulates plant tolerance to drought stress by affecting ABA signaling through regulating the stability and dynamic localization of CAR9.

A Large Scale GIS Geodatabase of Soil Parameters Supporting the modeling of Conservation Practice Alternatives in the United States

Water quality modeling requires across-scale support of combined digital soil elements and simulation parameters. This paper presents the unprecedented development of a large spatial scale (1:250,000) ArcGIS geodatabase coverage designed as a functional repository of soil-parameters for modeling and comparison of water quality outcomes in the United States. The set of target models include: SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), APEX (Agricultural Policy Environmental Extender), and ALmANAC (Agricultural Land management Alternatives with Numerical Assessment Criteria). This development relies on the Digital General Soil map (DGSm) as the source of soil information, and leverages on architectural design and associated tools created for a companion product at higher resolution from which also was extended a procedure for refilling a large number of missing derived parameters. Outlined by regional watershed layouts and supported by GIS land use layers, the core product is developed using the File Geodatabase (FGDB) data structure, which brings, via customized Python-based tools, the data directly into geoprocessing workflows. The FGDB implement efficiently stores spatial soil features, tabular model elements and linked relationships, while seamlessly providing the environment for the extraction, spatial analysis, and mapping of the models’ parameters. As an alternative, the composing spatial elements, polygons and multi-resolution rasters, and the models’ elements are offered as a file-folder system of data with completely Open Source formats. Finally, this geographic database coverage provides support for the traditional large-scale and harmonized application of the models as well as an alternative to the higher resolution companion for areas where this information is still under development.

The potato/tomato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli causes serious damage to several solanaceous crops by direct feeding and vectoring Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum,a bacterial *** beam(eBeam)irradiation is an environmentally friendly,chemical-free alternative method that is increasing in use for disinfestation of insect *** hypothesize that this irradiation technology will have detrimental effects on potato psyllid and thus impede its disease *** this end,we explored the effects of eBeam treatment ranging from 50 to 500 Gy on survival,development and reproduction of this *** on psyllids was apparently *** irradiated at 350 Gy,eggs could not hatch,1st instar nymphs failed to emerge,and although a small portion of irradiated 5th instar nymphs survived,the emerged adults were mostly *** in eclosed adults suggests harmful effects of eBeam on *** was seriously impaired when female psyllids were exposed to eBeam at the 5th instar nymphal or young adult stage,presumably due to inability to form *** addition,reciprocal crosses between irradiated and untreated psyllids indicated that female psyllids were more radiosensitive than males to *** together,these findings indicate that eBeam negatively impacted potato psyllid development and reproduction,which would inevitably compromise its disease transmission capacity.A dose of 350 Gy can be considered as a reference dose for effective control of potato psyllids.

Assessing risks for gastric cancer: New tools for pathologists

Although the Sydney Systems (original and updated) for the classification of gastritis have contributed substantially to the uniformity of the reporting of gastric conditions, they lack immediacy in conveying to the user information about gastric cancer risk. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the gastric lesions associated with an increased risk for cancer, and present the rationale for a proposal for new ways of reporting gastritis. In addition to the traditional histopathological data gathered and evaluated according to the Sydney System rules, pathologists could add an assessment expressed as grading and staging of the gastric inflammatory and atrophic lesions and integrate these findings with pertinent laboratory information on pepsinogens and gastrin levels. Such an integrated report could facilitate clinicians’ approach to the management of patients with gastric conditions.

Effects of nitrogen management on the ratoon crop yield and head rice yield in South USA

Ratoon rice cropping is an important component of the rice cropping system in texas and south Louisiana,USA,and expanded to Asian countries in *** field studies were conducted with widely planted rice(Oryza sativa L.)cultivars at Eagle Lake,texas,USA to determine the effects of nitrogen(N)management in main(first)crop(mC)and ratoon(second)crop(RC)on RC *** 2012 and 2013,one cultivar(Presidio)was adopted to determine the effects of RC N management on ratoon yield and head rice *** 2016 and 2017,CL153,CL163 and CL272 in addition to Presidio were adopted to examine the effect of mC N management on ratoon yield and head rice yield.N applied at preflood after mC harvest considerably improved RC *** of 99 kg N ha^(–1)at preflood after mC harvest was practically adequate for RC regrowth,development and approaching the yield potential for *** could produce quite high average grain yields of 5.90 to 6.53 t ha–1 in 2012 and 2013,*** crop N rate only significantly affected mC yield;however,given N applied of 99 kg ha^(–1)at preflood after mC harvest,ratoon yield was not significantly affected by mC N *** the main nor ratoon crop N management had a significant effect on RC head rice *** RC head rice yields(55–65%)were observed in all of the four cultivars and 4 years except for CL272 in *** results indicat that without very high N fertilizer application,rice ratoon crop could produce a considerable grain yield and an expectative head rice *** ratooning could be a practical way to increase rice yields with the minimal input in south texas and regions with a similar climate.

Assessing cotton defoliation, regrowth control and root rot infection using remote sensing technology

Cotton defoliation and post-harvest destruction are important cultural practices for cotton *** root rot is a serious and destructive disease that affects cotton yield and lint *** paper presents an overview and summary of the methodologies and results on the use of remote sensing technology for evaluating cotton defoliation and regrowth control methods and for assessing cotton root rot infection based on published *** reflectance spectra and airborne multispectral and hyperspectral imagery were used in these *** reflectance spectra effectively separated different levels of defoliation and airborne multispectral imagery permitted both visual and quantitative differentiations among defoliation *** ground reflectance and airborne imagery were able to differentiate cotton regrowth among different herbicide treatments for cotton stalk *** multispectral and hyperspectral imagery accurately identified root rot-infected areas within cotton *** from these studies indicate that remote sensing can be a useful tool for evaluating the effectiveness of cotton defoliation and regrowth control strategies and for detecting and mapping root rot damage in cotton *** with traditional visual observations and ground measurements,remote sensing techniques have the potential for effective and accurate assessments of various cotton production operations and pest conditions.

The distribution of drinking water-to-cattle ratios in the summer across four feedlots in the texas High Plains

In this short communication, we report the findings of a cross-sectional pilot study of the amount of water available per head of cattle (water-to-cattle ratio) and the associated feedlot and environmental factors across 26 pens in four texas feedlots. The water-to-cattle ratio varied greatly among pens within and between feedlots. mixed-effect linear regression modeling with feedlot as a random effect indicated that water in troughs with a higher water-to-cattle ratio was generally warmer when compared with water in troughs with a lower water-to-cattle ratio. This may have implications in the transmission and persistence of pathogens in feedlot cattle, such as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and Salmonella, because warmer water has been reported to favor the growth of these pathogens. Therefore, future field studies in feedlot cattle are warranted to assess whether the water-to-cattle ratio affects the prevalence of these pathogens in the water itself or in feces shed by the animals.
