An IEEE value loop of human-technology collaboration in geospatial information science

Automated regression test method for scientific computing libraries:Illustration with SPHinXsys

Scientific computing libraries,whether in-house or open-source,have witnessed enormous progress in both engineering and scientific ***,it is important to ensure that modifications to the source code,prompted by bug fixing or new feature development,do not compromise the accuracy and functionality that have been already validated and *** paper introduces a method for establishing and implementing an automatic regression test environment,using the open-source multi-physics library SPHinXsys as an illustrative ***,a reference database for each benchmark test is generated from observed data across multiple *** comprehensive database encapsulates the maximum variation range of metrics for different strategies,including the time-averaged,ensemble-averaged,and dynamic time warping *** accounts for uncertainties arising from parallel computing,particle relaxation,physical instabilities,and ***,new results obtained after source code modifications undergo testing based on a curve-similarity comparison against the reference *** the source code is updated,the regression test is automatically executed for all test cases,providing a comprehensive assessment of the validity of the current *** regression test environment has been successfully implemented in all dynamic test cases within SPHinXsys,including fluid dynamics,solid mechanics,fluid-structure interaction,thermal and mass diffusion,reaction-diffusion,and their multi-physics couplings,and demonstrates robust capabilities in testing different *** is noted that while the current test environment is built and implemented for a particular scientific computing library,its underlying principles are generic and can be easily adapted for use with other libraries,achieving equal effectiveness.

A CAD-compatible body-fitted particle generator for arbitrarily complex geo-metry and its application to wave-structure interaction

Generating body-fitted particle distribution for arbitrarily complex geometry underpins the applications of particle-based method to engineering and bioengineering and is highly challenging,and thus hinders the potential of particle *** this paper,we present a new computer-aided design(CAD)compatible body-fitted particle generator,termed as CAD-BPG,for arbitrarily complex 3-D *** parsing a CAD model,the present method can accurately tackle arbitrarily complex geometry representation and describe the corresponding geometry surface by constructing an implicit zero level-set function on Cartesian background *** achieve a body-fitted and isotropic particle distribution,physics-driven relaxation process with surface bounding governed by the transport-velocity formulation of smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)methodology is conducted to characterize the particle evolution.A set of examples,ranging from propeller,stent structures and anatomical heart models,show simplicity,accuracy and versatility of the present CAD-BPG for generating body-fitted particle distribution of arbitrarily complex 3-D *** but not least,the present CAD-BPG is applied for modeling wave-structure interaction,where wave interaction with an oscillating wave surge converter is studied,and the results show that the present method not only provides an efficient and easy-to-implement pre-processing tool for particle-based simulation but also improves the numerical accuracy compared with lattice particle ***,the propose CAD-BPG sheds light on simulating real-world applications by particle-based methods for researchers and engineers.

SPH modeling of fluid-structure interaction

This work concerns numerical modeling of fluid-structure interaction（FSI） problems in a uniform smoothed particle hydrodynamics（SPH） framework. It combines a transport-velocity SPH scheme, advancing fluid motions, with a total Lagrangian SPH formulation dealing with the structure deformations. Since both fluid and solid governing equations are solved in SPH framework, while coupling becomes straightforward, the momentum conservation of the FSI system is satisfied strictly. A well-known FSI benchmark test case has been performed to validate the modeling and to demonstrate its potential.

Vertical Distribution of Soil Pyrogenic Matter: A Review

Alteration of terrestrial biomass during fire produces pyrogenic matter, a large quantity of which is deposited on and may enter soils. The amount of annual burning around the globe implies greater production and storage of carbon in soil pyrogenic organic matter(pyrOM) than is regularly found in investigations of soil pyrogenic matter. A portion of this unaccounted for pyrogenic material may be translocated to subsurface soil depths, which is frequently excluded from soil investigations, and the presence of subsoil charcoal helps to partially fill this pyrOM gap. In this paper, I discuss the mechanisms for vertical redistribution of pyrogenic matter in soils and develop conceptual models to describe the depth, particle size, and age distribution of pyrogenic matter resulting from different translocation mechanisms. Based on the relationships between pyrogenic matter turnover and translocation, the suitability of pyrogenic matter in soils as an indicator for soil processes is discussed. Deciphering the relationships between pyrogenic matter depth, particle size, and age distribution yields valuable insights into the dynamics of soil forming processes as well as soil pyrogenic matter turnover,which should therefore, be a focus of future studies.

NeuroBiometric:An Eye Blink Based Biometric Authentication System Using an Event-Based Neuromorphic Vision Sensor

The rise of the Internet and identity authentication systems has brought convenience to people's lives but has also introduced the potential risk of privacy *** biometric authentication systems based on explicit and static features bear the risk of being attacked by mimicked *** work proposes a highly efficient biometric authentication system based on transient eye blink signals that are precisely captured by a neuromorphic vision sensor with microsecond-level temporal *** neuromorphic vision sensor only transmits the local pixel-level changes induced by the eye blinks when they occur,which leads to advantageous characteristics such as an ultra-low latency *** first propose a set of effective biometric features describing the motion,speed,energy and frequency signal of eye blinks based on the microsecond temporal resolution of event *** then train the ensemble model and non-ensemble model with our Neuro Biometric dataset for biometrics *** experiments show that our system is able to identify and verify the subjects with the ensemble model at an accuracy of 0.948 and with the non-ensemble model at an accuracy of *** low false positive rates(about 0.002)and the highly dynamic features are not only hard to reproduce but also avoid recording visible characteristics of a user's *** proposed system sheds light on a new path towards safer authentication using neuromorphic vision sensors.

An Eulerian SPH method with WENO reconstruction for compressible and incompressible flows

While Eulerian smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH)method has received increasing attention in scientific and industrial communities owing to its high spatial accuracy,it exhibits excessive numerical dissipation due to the fact that the flux is derived in particle pair *** this paper,we adopt a one-dimensional weighted essentially non-oscillatory(WENO)reconstruction to reduce the numerical dissipation and improve the overall accuracy particularly in capturing the contact *** underlying principle is to construct a 4-point stencil along the interacting line of each particle pair and then the WENO scheme is applied to reconstruct the initial states of the Riemann problem which determines the flow flux.A set of benchmark tests for both compressible and incompressible flows are studied to investigate the accuracy,robustness and versatility of the proposed Eulerian SPH method with the WENO reconstruction(ESPH-WENO).

Multimodal imaging in acute retinal ischemia: spectral domain OCT, OCT-angiography and fundus autofluorescence

AIM： To describe retinal findings of various imaging modalities in acute retinal ischemia. METHODS： Fluorescein angiography（FA）, spectral domain optical coherence tomography（SD-OCT）, OCTangiography（OCT-A） and fundus autofluorescence（FAF） images of 13 patients（mean age 64y, range 28-86y） with acute retinal ischemia were evaluated. Six suffered from branch arterial occlusion, 2 had a central retinal artery occlusion, 2 had a combined arteriovenous occlusions, 1 patient had a retrobulbar arterial compression by an orbital haemangioma and 2 patients showed an ocular ischemic ***： All patients showed increased reflectivity and thickening of the ischemic retinal tissue. In 10 out of 13 patients SD-OCT revealed an additional highly reflective band located within or above the outer plexiform layer. Morphological characteristics were a decreasing intensity with distance from the fovea, partially segmental occurrence and manifestation limited in time. OCT-A showed a loss of flow signal in the superficial and deep capillary plexus at the affected areas. Reduced flow signal was detected underneath the regions with retinal edema. FAF showed areas of altered signal intensity at the posterior pole. The regions of decreased FAF signal corresponded to peri-venous regions. CONCLUSION： Multimodal imaging modalities in retinal ischemia yield characteristic findings and valuable diagnostic information. Conventional OCT identifies hyperreflectivity and thickening and a mid-retinal hyperreflective band is frequently observed. OCT-A examination reveals demarcation of the ischemic retinal area on the vascular level. FAF shows decreased fluorescence signal in areas of retinal edema often corresponding to peri-venous regions.
