he effects of porous hydroxyapatite blocks（PHABs） and an adjunct low-intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulation（LIPUS） on the fusion rate in a rabbit spinal posterolateral fusion（PLF） model were *** rabbits underwent PLF with autograft and PHABs were randomly assigned to two groups：treated group with 20 min LIPUS daily and untreated control group for 4 weeks until *** fused motion segments were subjected to manual palpation,gross observation,and radiographic investigation before histomorphologic and scanning electron microscopic *** differences between the LIPUS group and the control group are found in the fusion rate,bone density gray scale,trabecular bone formation,osteoblast-like cells,chondrocytes and positive expression of BMP-2 and TGF-β1 in the junction zone（significance level p〈0.05）.The results suggest that LIPUS can increase fusion rates and accelerate bone in-growth into ***,PHAB and LIPUS may be used together to increase fusion rates in a rabbit spinal fusion model with a promising extension to human application.

Tendon ruptures remain a significant musculoskeletal injury. Despite advances in surgical techniques and procedures, traditional repair techniques maintain a high incidence of rerupture or tendon elongation. Mechanical loading and biochemical signaling both control tissue healing. This has led some researchers to consider using a technique based on tension regulation at the suture line for obtaining good healing. However, it is unknown how they interact and to what extent mechanics control biochemistry. This review will open the way for understanding the interplay between mechanical loading and the process of tendon healing.

Dexamethasone (16-MFP) suppression test, as an aid to the diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome, has been studied and improved by many investigators. Recently, this test has been employed by Gilliand and Ghose to study the adrenocortical function in patients with hyperthyroidism. This paper presents the results of the dexamethasone suppression test in assessing the adrenocortical function in patients with a variety of chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND Hypertension,hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia are chronic conditions associated with cardiometabolic *** anthropometric indices are known to predict *** To investigate the association of anthropometric indices with these chronic diseases and which anthropometric index predicts them *** In this study,221 apparently healthy individuals who never received treatments for cardiovascular disease(CVD),diabetes or other chronic diseases *** age of the participants ranged from 20-75 years with mean age of 36.9±11.4 *** risk factors of these diseases namely systolic blood pressures(SBP)and diastolic blood pressures(DBP),fasting blood glucose(FBG)and triglycerides(TG)were determined for all the participants using standard clinical *** obesity anthropometric indices,waist circumference,waist-to-height ratio,waist-to-hip ratio and body mass index as well as abdominal height(AH)and body surface index were *** association between each of them with the risk factors were determined by the Pearson correlation *** From the results,it was found that AH showed superiority over the rest for SBP(r=0.301,P<0.01),DBP(r=0.370,P<0.01),FBG(r=0.297,P<0.01)and TG(r=0.380,P<0.01).Using the receiver operating characteristic curves,cut-off values of AH for SBP,DBP,FBG and TG were determined to be 24.75 cm,24.75 cm,25.25 cm and 24.75 cm *** The indices of anthropometry used in this study correlated significantly with the studied CVD risk factors,with AH emerging as the most predictive.

Objective: The current study was designed to investigate the relationship between the pattern of methylation of calcitonin (CT) gene and the activity of DNA methyltranferase (MTase). Methods: The methylation rate of the 5′ region of the CT gene (CTMR) and the activity of MTase in 6 solid tumor cell lines and 2 leukemia cell lines were determined. CTMR was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with inter and external references in combination with restriction endonuclease and laser scan technique. MTase activity was examined by isotope labeled microassay. Results: Both CTMR and MTase activity in all tumor cell lines were significantly higher than that of control cells. The increased MTase activity was relative to elevated CTMR. Conclusion: There is prevalence of hypermethylation of CT gene and elevated activity of MTase in malignant cells. The increased MTase activity is one of the possible reasons for CT gene hypermethylation in tumor cells.

Objective:To determine the prevalence of HIV seropositivity among patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the ***:All patients with clinical and histopathological confirmation of squamous cell carcinoma seen during a ten year period(July 1999 to June 2009) were tested for HIV(Human Immunodeficiency Virus).The number of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva who are HIV positive were ***:A total of thirty-three(33) eyes in thirtytwo(32) patients were confirmed histopathologically to have conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma. Their ages ranged from 22 years to 66 yean with a mean age of(38.6± 11.8) years(SD).The male to female ratio was 1:*** four(75%) of these patients were HIV ***: Squamous cell carcinoma is associated with the human immunodeficiency virus and is thus a marker for the disease in Benin City,Nigeria.

The optical and physical properties of an InGaN light-emitting diode （LED） with a specific design of a staggered AlGaN electron-blocking layer （EBL） are investigated numerically in detail. The electrostatic field distribution, energy band, carrier concentration, electroluminescence （EL） intensity, internal quantum efficiency （IQE）, and the output power are simulated. The results reveal that this specific design has a remarkable improvement in optical performance compared with the design of a conventional LED. The lower electron leakage current, higher hole injection efficiency, and consequently mitigated efficiency droop are achieved. The significant decrease of electrostatic field at the interface between the last barrier and the EBL of the LED could be one of the main reasons for these improvements.

In this study the effects of surface modification of Polyethylene Terephthalates （PET） fibers with 58S bioactive glasses on osteoblasts proliferation and osseointegration in the tibia-articular tendon-bone healing model were investigated. PET sheets were coated with 58S bioactive glass and uncoated PET sheets were used as a control. Scanning Electron Microscope （SEM） and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer were adopted to analyze the surface characteristics of the fibers. MT3T3-E 1 cells were cultured with the PET fibers and the MTT and ALP were tested at 1, 3, 5 days. Twenty-four skeletally mature male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into two groups, the 58S-PET group and the PET group. Both groups underwent a surgical procedure to establish a tibia-articular tendon-bone healing model. Mechanical examinations and histological assays were taken to verify the coating effects in vivo. Results of both MTT and ALP tests show significant differences （P 〈 0.01） between the 58S-PET group and the PET group. At 6 weeks and 12 weeks, the max load-to-failure was significantly higher in the 58S-PET group. In the histological assays, distinct new bone formation was observed only in the 58S-PET group and stronger osseoin- tegration was seen in the 58S-PET group than that in the control group. The 58S-coating on PET could enhance the proliferation and activity of the osteoblasts and therefore promote the new bone formation and tendon-bone healing.
